The issues I have with the current mage tower are the following:
1: It is not what it was advertised to be. Blizzard advertised the return of the mage tower as a fun thing that everyone could enjoy to get transoms, still a challenge, but not something impossible. Something even that could be accessed with any character that is lvl 45 or above. Now if people with max geared characters cannot complete it I highly doubt that a lvl 45 could without the last row of talents and the additional SL power.
2: People are optimising their characters with gear from previous expansions because the one from SL is insufficient: it was advertised as a challenge that could be done as it is, we should not need to go and farm Antorus in mythic just to have gear that allows me not to be oneshotted by an unavoidable capacity. Or people putting the neck and cape from BfA because even with the squish in ilvl it gives better stats. The challenge should test skill, yes, not the ability of people to just farm old raids to have better gear because otherwise it is downright impossible. All of the guides and videos I’ve seen of successful completions of the tower were made with legendaries and artefacts from Legion and gear taken from mythic Antorus, I should be able with the right preparation and skill to complete the challenge on my SL gear. I should not be needing extra help from old gear that will not serve me in any other case than this one.
3: Things can be scaled up in difficulty. Make a mythic mode for those who really want the glory and a title or an achievement or something, but make the mage tower accessible also to more casual players (again, as advertised)
4: Borrowed power: Back in legion people had legendaries and bored power and artefacts that changed a lot the way the mage tower was doable. I have friends who geared alts just to do the mage tower back in legion and managed to do it and tried today with the same characters that have not moved since, same gear, same challenge but today somehow it was impossible for them to complete.
5: Limited time: I would not have a problem or less at least with all of the above if the content was not just limited to 2 weeks. How do you expect anyone to be able to complete the mage tower challenges for the mount in that short amount of time with that kind of difficulty? Either make it accessible all the time and then it becomes a grind that everyone can do at some point or it is an elitist bullcrap that is targeted only to a small percentage of people that has the time to spend 5+ hours a day on wow and that last part is not okay, especially in a. drought of content like we are having now.
Suggestions:
-Nerf it, don’t nerf it, in the end it’s up to blizzard.
-At least make it doable in full SL gear so that the progression of my characters counts for something in the completion of the challenge and I don’t struggle the same with my 250 fully geared pal than I would with a newly pinged 60 character.
-Nerf it for more casual players and keep the current difficulty as a mythic mode for people who want to go the extra mile, there is nothing wrong in really hard content either.
-Do not put it for a limited amount of time: Just leave it there so that I can farm all the challenges one by one and have the time to gear my character for it without bursting a vein or risking to lose my job or sleep for doing so.
-Be bloody clearer on your advertisements for this kind of content. If it had been advertised as something really hard from the get go I would not have minded, I would not have even tried it either because I don’t have the time for it right now but I would not have felt so betrayed once again by the lack of effective communication. I was excited about the mage tower that I could not complete on legion, I was excited about the time walking event as a fun thing to do with friends and alone and I’m left just with a bitter and disappointed taste because it is nothing like what it was advertised to be.
I completely agree with the points that you’ve mention and described what the problem is. It is really over tuned and the scaling of the gear is just horrible. Shadowlands 220+ilvl gear feels like green items in this MT challenge.
I agree with the difficulty part as well, for casuals it is near to impossible to complete, it is somehow easier with the legacy items because you automatically deal a lot more damage with all the sockets and enchants that you can put on it. However, limited time makes it near to impossible to farm the gear yourself and buying it is overpriced because of MT.
Me as a guardian druid was really excited for the challenge because last time we got this opportunity to get cool bear mog was 4 years ago. So to get this chance again just for 2 weeks and the event is way too difficult and way too over tuned to be completed in shadowlands gear is just sad experience overall. I did over 250+ tries yesterday and I watched my friends trying to do it on discord as well. Nothing seemed to work for us. And we simply all gave up and got burnt out of it. We understand the mechanics but damage is too low, spawn rate is too quick and everything seems to be 0.2 sec perfect if you want to complete it.
I agree that difficulty levels should be introduced so that people who are hardcore could complete this on mythic difficulty and casuals on normal. But I doubt blizzard will ever consider casuals as their player base. I guess blizzard doesn’t need subscriptions anymore.
I got trough the 1st phase finally… And then just got dumped on the 2nd phase. Still using shadowlands gear. Don’t have millions to spend for that socketed gear.
I’ve given up after spending 50k+ gold on consumables, almost finishing it (3 times under 5%) before Blizzard hotfixed the exploit that made the fight easier…
I keep reading responses like this and just can’t help but laugh at this.
A guy on the timewalking discord posted a screenshot of him on the mount, so everyone can do it right? A mate of mine raids mythic and gets CE every tier so everyone should be able to achieve this, right? The dudes from Limit got world first, so everyone is able to be in that race, right?
See the thing with such statements is that not everyone is of equal skill. I’m sure as hell never able to achieve CE for many reasons, one of wich is dedication. I just don’t have the time to dedicate myself, nor do I have the reaction times anymore.
Same with the guy who already has the mount. Think he took a lot of breaks? You’ll always have the 1%, and ofc they shine (rightfully so , I want to add), but by no means they are a standard, keep that in mind.
Same in the real world. How many people are depressed because they keep comparing themselves to celebrities that fake their life on social media, or bigshots like Elon Must who has a very unique mind and works 100+ hours a week. See what I mean?
The Mage Tower is overtuned for the general public, period. Yes it should remain a challenge, but more akin that of heroic raiding and not ‘make one tiny mistake and you wipe’- mythic raiding. Not enough people see that we mean this when we ask for nerfs, not a oneshot.
Sorry for the long post, people won’t reply anyway, they rarely do to such walls of text but I couldn’t help myself.
Did the enhancement shaman in shadowlands gear, wasn’t that bad, took a few attempts thinking about when to drop my burst and tinkering abit with stats and talents since they changed the encounter to be a dps check instead of just doing the mechanics correctly for all time untill you beat it.
That I do agree with. I’m one of the lucky few who already completed the Tower on my main (see the mog), but even then I felt like chipping away at a solid brick wall.
I would like to see how it plays with leggos enabled before any nerfs tbh, possibly also with your covenant power enabled.
The aff lock one was just boring, after first guy is dead you’re just dotting down an enraged 150k hp boss while spamming drain life. Having leggos would probably spice it up a bit.
I’ve only tried it on resto druid, failing horribly and not getting past phase 1. Allies take so much damage. I don’t even want to imagine what that next phase it like.
In the end, I stopped after 10 tries. It genuinely made me feel depressed and burnt out. Solo’ing heroic PF for mount with 243 gear as druid was a challenge, but not depressingly difficult.
Still no nerfs to difficulty, only nerfs to things that helped make it easier.
This is depressing.
Who is this dev team trying to appeal to? Atm its killing the game anyway…
As I mentioned my issues is not with the difficulty at all, my main issue is in the huge difference between how it was advertised and how it is.
I will never have CE and i don’t care, but blizzard kept doign teasers about the Mage tower and how cool it was going to be to have the transmogs to the point where me - and a lot of people - thought that it would be possible with a bit of elbow grease. Also yes, those are challenges that are supposed to be hard, absolutely, and they are supposed to test skill, but the thing is that right now they don’t. They test resources.
For me I just want to play a game to relax, not play a damn instance that you must do everything perfect or it is over. I understand that there is people getting it done with no live and only wow. but casual players can’t. just this struggle made me close wow, want to relax not break my stuff from frustration.
I’d be more annoyed if the rewards weren’t recoloured tier sets, majority of which look like tripe. But I sympathize to players who were looking forward to getting the sets they liked. Especially since Blizzard attempted to make this Legion timewalking stuff the selling point of the patch lol.
