Hello fellows monks!
Shadowlands will come next week, and I am still torn about what character play.
I’m a semi casual player, 1-2 raids per week and some M+ often pugs (going for +15).
My guild asked me to come with melee dps tank off spec.
I mained monk in WoD and I had fun. Then stopped and came again in February with DK/Discipline priest to try something new (even if I made my DK back in WotLK).
Now comes the “problem”. I know I should play what I like, but I hated to be constantly refused in M+ pugs because of priest bad reputation, and with DK I often had to tank.
I don’t want to be again refused because of community perception, it’s not fun.
I read a lot of doom and gloom about monk dps in SL. But if I go on wowmeta, I can see it middle of the pack, which is fine. Then I have to think about scaling issues…
Alternatives would be
DK unholy (great spec, but aesthetically I don’t like it like monk)
DH (Havos is too fast paced and I don’t like to be forced to use Fel Rush as a dps move)
Enhancement (my old main. I like the changes, easy CD based spec, ofc can’t tank)
Any advice? I woul ofc like to read that WW is not the bad in SL , but even Peak of Serenity seems to think it
The truth is, if you are raiding or running M+ with friends, you will do fine as WW. You will have to put in more effort than other classes/specs, make less mistakes, but you will pump decent numbers, you wont be topping meters with ease, but if done right, you won’t be far behind. And you will shine more in M+ due to AOE, and struggle bit more in Raids due to ST.
But you are also right that the community’s perception of WW is not very healthy, as such, I’d expect many declines as WW when pugging.
Personally, I’m ditching WW. In part because I’m tired of the declines, and in part as protest against WW’s treatment by Blizz. I would actually love it if many others ditched WW too. Maybe then, Blizz finally rework it. And finally, in part, because SL is not very friendly to multi-specers.
Blizzard seems to hate monks, they never get any love.
the announced changes are very lackluster and won’t do much, they will never fix the scaling issues or do anything about the mess that is SEF.
Feels just bad playing monk, while every hunter pet will do more dmg than my whole class despite us having 3x the buttons to press
I’m not an expert by any means, but Brewmaster is looking to be quite good, and gameplay-wise more similar to pre-Legion BrM. However, you’re probably better off playing something other than Windwalker. Even Enhancement is a middle of the pack spec now, though I think it’s a lot more static and unrewarding.
But like people always say, every class will be viable if you’re not a hardcore player. You’ll need to think about if you value class fantasy, themes and aesthetics so much that you’re willing to choose monk over a “safe” melee spec. I do, but I play MW anyway.
This. If you aren’t Cutting Edge, pick what you ENJOY and go have fun. Balance is by no means perfect in SL, but I honestly think Blizz managed quite well considering all the overlapping systems (I’m not counting Pelagos, he will be nerfed further. you just wait)
In the end I will main my Monk again, simply because I found it the most fun spec overall. Vengeance is good but I hate Havoc, Unholy is good but Blood is boring imho.
