Heya all,
What are the main differences between the rogue specs? .. Like is one better at aoe, cleve, burst, single target ? ..
I know that assassin is dot based, but what about the others, what really make them difference?
thanks!

I presume you are looking into trying rogue, dont bother trying rogue, save yourself some time, and roll DK (blizz’s favourite spec as soon as they cry a bit they rebuff everything), Mage, or play your lock.
hmm..
But is having quite a bit of fun with it so far, though just level 85 right now
Sub is your cloack and dagger, attack from the shadow type
Best way describe outlaw is your typical Pirate type with stealth
Im no expert about which is best but these i think would be good descriptions of what they represent
The difference between rogue specs is that every tuning patch there will be one that does the most damage. And then you’re supposed to play that one. Oh, and it won’t be Outlaw.
They don’t really have much identity besides:
But they all play pretty much the same anyway. And most flavor abilities like Pick Pocket do nothing anymore.
You all really making it hard to enjoy the class, was having a fine time leveling it, but hard to keep being motivated ![]()
We are currently in a bit of a ditch re: tuning and certain parts of design. But basically, it goes like this:
Assassination - DoT focused, slow-paced, needs a bit more energy management than the rest. You will run out of energy, this is part of the design. Kinda lacking in terms of design, but if you just want to chill and have an almost static slower rotation, this one works.
Outlaw - fast-paced, very reactive, several important procs and some gambling with personal buffs. The only spec that is supposed to be GCD locked but right now requires a lot of haste to get there.
Sub - alternates between fast-paced in cooldowns and slow-paced out of them. Very heavy on burst, your damage out of Shadow Dance/Secret Techniques window will be rather lacking, but they’re on a pretty short cooldown these days. By far the simplest spec right now, very few buttons, not a lot of reactive stuff either.
Damage tuning is…very questionable right now. No spec performs as well as it logically should.
Don’t let buthurt Rogue players turn you away from Rogue.
Even in a “bad meta spot” Rogue is king in 1v1 PvP. Rogue players are just so used to being OP constantly, that the one time they are in a bad spot they act up hehe.
Sublety = Stealthy shadow ninja. It’s rotation has been simplified a lot after pruning (I quite enjoy it now), and it’s the spec that has stun after stun. Perfect for nuking people in a stun lock.
Assassin = Poison DoT gameplay. You basically rot people to death, but against classes that can remove your bleeds and poisons you are quite weak.
Outlaw = The pirate themed one. This one basically has RNG as part of it’s gameplay, where you roll for random buffs and hope you get the good ones. The RNG gameplay has been improved now since pruning from what I hear.
The most irrelevant area of the game for the last 15 years at the very least? PvP itself has been a dying mode for a decade, but even the “alive” parts are arenas and BGs, not 1v1 settings.
Unironically the last time Rogue was “OP” was either BfA or, if you want actual OP instead of being well-suited to the season meta, end of Cata, and only because Blizz gave us a legendary (in hindsight, that was them saying “good luck, we are never really gonna bother with you again”). If you include “simply very good” in “OP”, then maybe 10.2.
Ret paladins would like to have a word with you.
Rogues have not won a dueling tournament in ages. These days rogues don’t even participate anymore.
Hehe well every class has it’s counter parts. ![]()
Yeah, I also can’t help but feel that most of the ladies and gentelmen here between simply describe the differences between the specs - and by that answering your question - try also to pour out their grievances.
I agree with Ravnrok’s, Сотрий’s and Nightscale’s descriptions (minus grievances of the last two cases).
Subtlety - attack from shadows to do most of the damage in a short window, often support by shadow magic. A collage of a fast and a little slower gamplay windows.
Outlaw - sort of half-pirate, half-cowboy fantasy, having the fastest gameplay of all three specs.
Assassin - Poisons and bleeds based attacks. Can’t tell more, because it’s the less played spec by me.
