Malding in Stormwind

Even wikipedia defines her as a writer /and/ philosopher!

If you don’t see the truth - then truly you are lost!

You know someone is bad at this whole thing when those who seem to have any philosophy background in the conversation all wind up defending Rand of all people.

Because it’s an encyclopedia - a professional work that aims to be open about various alternatives and make them known to you - implying that it remains open to the possibility that any claim can be wrong. The term philosophical work is also accompanied by a substantial degree of skepticism, if you bother to read, or is often accompanied by a remark that most people don’t consider it philosophical.

No OOCer could be as obnoxiously stubborn as this guy is being with this argument!

Wording is also considered very important to any essay or discussion when it comes to philosophy or debate. They would just refer to “texts”, “movements” and “works” if the stance was that they are not of a philosophical nature. Doing otherwise would go against what you consider to be the whole point of the text.

Am I implicitly making the case that OOCers are better than certain role-players?

" In her non-fiction, Rand developed a conception of metaphysical realism, rationality, ethical egoism (rational self-interest), individual rights, laissez-faire capitalism, and art, and applied her philosophy to social issues. She wrote polemical, philosophical essays, often in response to questions by fans of Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead ; lectured on college campuses; and gave radio and television interviews."

Ye, sounds totally like the article is skeptic about her being one or contributing anything.

I’ve read most of it, bro - none of it corroborates any of the nonsense you’ve been spouting this thread. I’m afraid you’ll just need to bow to my expertise in close reading as one of the principal academic techniques I’ve mastered on my English lit course.

Was never a question about it in my head! Not because OOCers are cool, but because there are some really uncool roleplayers!

I didn’t even read it. It’s clear from the ‘gotcha’ quotations that he posted that it doesn’t support his point, otherwise he’d have posted better quotes.

Yeah when he first linked it I was somewhat worried he’d actually got a gotcha quote that’d btfo me, but in actuality it was a waste of my time to read it. Sad.

Shouldn’t worry anyway! I bet he’s way worse than you at the game!

A bit of free advice: When using quotations in a discussion make absolutely sure that not only do they support your point but that they are absolutely airtight. If there is any ambiguity in the quotations it’ll come back to bite you.

Note: That applies to serious philosophical papers and stuff. When it comes to online debate you can afford to be a bit less strict with them due to the more casual nature.

Have we name-dropped Deridda yet? Everyone knows you can’t have a philosophy urinal contest without someone dropping the big D into things and doing so completely unaware of whether it’s a appropriate.

Wait, am I talking about the philosophy off or the earlier espoused views of gender toilet signs having no compelling power? Dang this thread.

Well this thread sure took many U-turns, from ooc’ers to debating whether or not someone is a philosopher. What a ride.

Dude the thing is that even if he had a direct quote from, idk, twelve different relevant ‘professional philosophers’ (lol) it wouldn’t change anything. Being considered a ‘philosopher’ is fully subjective, as it’s a title anybody can apply to themselves, really, and it doesn’t even matter at the end of the day.

Yeah, I loved Ayn Rand’s Bioshock

Ich bin ein Philosopher.

My first work, Thus Spoke Morstethustra, was inspired by that famed Gestian philosopher of the same name, author of: I Remind Thee.

Your Derrida does not match up to Slavoj Zizek’s societal comparison of Western European cultures to their way of flushing toilets.
