When you are in the zone Maldraxxus sometimes the skybox changes and the whole zone gets real dark.
It becomes like a new zone with a different vibe. I quite like it more like that than the original colour scheme which is brown/green. 
Does anyone know why we get this darkness in the zone from time to time? I mean it does not last more than a couple of seconds, which is to bad.
It’s because whenever I enter the area, everything becomes even edgier than usual.
Yeah its a much nicer zone when it goes dark, ugly as hell when its light.
Is it the necropolis coming overhead?

I think it’s related to that necropolis floating above. I’ve been wondering about the darkness and said necropolis since release.
I wish they would just give us a proper day/night cycle.
There is no sun in the Shadowlands in the first place. How would that even work?
But I’m with you. I wish we still had actually dark nights as they were in early vanilla.

Nah it’s not the necropolis, though I can see why it could be.
Every zone in the Shadowlands (bar the Maw) has its own special weather that happens instead of rain. For Maldraxxus, it’s a ‘spirit storm’, the zone goes dark for a bit and if you look up you see a whole bunch of spirits dancing around. It’s real pretty.
You can buy the Inky Black Potion from the SI7 basement in SW, it makes everything dark and makes some zones better.
I agree that Maldraxxus is improved when we get that dark phase. I have no idea what causes it, no one really seems to know.
When Necropolis is above you can see normal shadow on the ground, so im sure darkness it’s not from it. Im very curious too, about this dark phase. Meybe some old God showing appearance? xD
Aside from potential necropolis it could be a weather effect. I have noticed each zone has it’s own special weather.
Bastion - floating white dots almost like snow.
Ardenweald - Mini comets rain down, purple and make the place darker but also light up fluorescent and burn my retina.
Revendreth - Black rain or raining fire, depending where you are.
Maldraxxus seems to have something… but only seen it a couple times and put it down to a theatre of pain boss effects .
