Did you hear this guys? We’re a meta spec! The recently starting event “Break The Meta” features BM and SV, but not Marksmanship.
I’ve checked Raider .io and Murlok .io, MM hunter currently has the lowest m+ rating among ALL SPECS, the only possible contender is Dev Evoker.
E.g. Murlok shows highest MM hunter with 3179, while SV hunter - 3563. Enh sham’s highest score is 3659.
I have no idea who created those “Break the Meta Spec”, I can only guess that they must’ve gone through the same crash course “how to do your job as a complete moron” as the people responsible for tuning MM hunter this patch.

I think it’s more to do with trying to include a spec for each class so everyone can partake and they base it on how many play the spec too, so Survival and BM made the list purely because there’s way more MM players attempting M+. Some things just get bumped off the list for those reasons.
Shouldn’t be too literal about the title of the event. It’s all explained on Raider .io in the eligible specs section.

I’d guess that the 3.1% stat for Hunter on the “DPS Class Frequency By Run” chart is MM.
If they indeed judge by the logic you describe, then they should’ve included Aug Evoker, because it is one of the least played specs.
Also I am currently mostly playing 8-10 keys with my alts and Marksmanship is by far the rarest hunter spec I see in those keys. Marksmanship was the most popular spec before patch 11.0.5 for sure, after that wonderful patch majority of hunters swapped to survival or BM or stopped playing entirely.
My only guess is that they account for overall season data without properly processing 11.0.5 shifts, at least for hunter. So that if you get an average popularity of specs from late August to Mid December, yeah, MM may look like the most popular spec, not because of being meta, but because a traditionally most popular spec - BM Hunter - was completely unviable in m+ before 11.0.5.
And I admit that SV Hunter after 11.0.5. is probably not as popular as Marksmanship was before 11.0.5. not because of numbers, but because majority of people do not play hunter to be another melee spec.
On that DPS popularity chart, one of the Evoker specs is 11.3% and that is likely the Aug spec.
The charts, and the list for this event, are based on data from 12+ keys though, not overall class popularity across the entire game or lower keys. On raider .io you can clearly see that every top team has Aug in it.
I’m not sure if the data they use is based on the entire season or the current patch though, like you said.

Yeah prolly, it shows enhancement shaman as the least popular spec, I guess they should’ve added it into break the meta.
In my 8-10 keys I see enh shamans in every second group, their charter does not make sense.
MM meta!? XDDD they really are thick…
