who knows? the datamined stuff is mostly about phase 2, so 31 points, not 51. no one knows where they take it after p2.
for p2, 7 points in survival is mandatory.
for pvp, full survival is meta - wyvern sting to cap the 15 sec cd trap launcher with double traps that (talented) procs roots every 3 sec on high chance to hit. big 2h raptor swings in melee and deterrence. lone wolf 30% to buff the burst. u stunlock every melee in perpituity until they nerf it. u sleep the healer and kill teh melee, then vipersting the healer and trap him, and set up yr burst. its a cc God.
BM DW 24/0/7 is teh obvious pve build. u stay in melee 100% of the time, and the bow is a statstick only in raids. u drink strengthpots and roll on the epic melee weapons and enjoy the hate.
As soon as several of the Dev’s who (clearly) main Warriors/Rogues/Paladins loose a few rolls to Hunters for melee weapons this will soon be changed - (or nerfed as is becoming tradition for Hunters in SoD) - 100%

its like asking a master chef to serve premade fastfood, or an architect to cut timber. we dont belong there. we dont want to be there. we arent legbiters. just give the melee hunters a free reroll to teh class of their choice, they have options:
fury warrior
arms warrior
prot warrior
feral drood
retri pally
assass rogue
sub rogue
combat rogue
prot warlock even
ench shammy
bear tank
overeager mages even, they will tank accidentally in p2, all the time.
the game only had one ranged phys class, and its being deleted.

What I wonder about is - does Explosive trap scale in vanilla as well as it does in Wrath. Because if it does, melee might genuinely have two different builds even in PvE, the two you mentioned, two handed trapper style and a dual wield BM one.
But if it doesn’t, two handed trapper will have a hard time competing with the dual wield rune.
I don’t see why twohanded wouldn’t also go with Melee Specialist. They obviously can’t go with Dual Wield so they’re kinda forced to go with Trap Launcher for extra damage but I don’t see why they’d go with Expose Weaknesses. Could the traps proc the effect more often? Sure. And if it does then you spam Raptor Strike on its new 3 sec CD over and over again. Could be useful. Assuming it procs off of dots.
If it doesn’t then unless the 4th unknown rune is a great alternative you’re just going to suffer a DPS loss going two handed in phase 2.
I don’t understand why they’re punishing 2 hand melee by doing this tbh.
Carve’s still going to be trash, don’t bother with that, just go with BM like usual. That way you can get the pet to taunt the threat off of you if you need to.
If you’re referring to the Raptor Strike CD reset here, I’m pretty sure that part of the tooltip means Raptor Strike itself can just not trigger CD, not that outside damage will reset its CD, since it says - [Raptor Strike has a 30% chance on each attack not to trigger its cooldown.]
I’m sure math people will figure out which of the runes are the best, but I would be surprised if Melee Specialist wasn’t go to regardless of whether you are using two handed or dual wield, Raptor Strike just carries so much damage when its main drawback is removed.
yeah dude why tf do i want to play melee as hunter ? i never understand it (not against it either) hunter’s whole point is being ranger and rarely melee attack if they really want to push this type of game style at least give other good tools to MM and BM so we don’t feel forced to play Pet melee hunter .don’t get me started with that shtty trap rune it’s literally spellbook put as rune ability …
I mean, if you look at it from pure fantasy perspective, some iconic rangers are melee weapon users. For every Legolas or Alleria plonking away with a bow (and the former was pretty proficient with swords too), you got a Drizzt or Rexxar who wades into melee.
Being a melee with a beastial pet is a really cool character fantasy, whether you’re playing an elf, orc or whatever race you fancy, and people have been trying to force it to work even back in the day (even if it really didn’t)
The sad reality of having a class with multiple DPS specs is that one will always be on top. Play the one you like, classic raids really aren’t so hard you need to have everyone in the raid using a top tier class. Phase 1 ranged BM was on top, we will see what the numbers will be in p2, and balance will shift back and forth in the future. If you play with people who want to play with you, the person, it won’t matter what you’re playing as long as you’re enjoying it.
If you’re not feeling forced to play a warrior what with them being top DPS by a not insgnificant margin, why would it matter within hunter class.
sure. if retripally is the ONLT pallyspec that can leave the house in p2, if tank shammy or die is the rule, if all warriors can only use sheild or its /spit, aso aso- then yea.
but melee - and u mite b from retail, but this is the classic realm, we dont do that here - is not a hunter build. its a meme. i dont mind it being viable, for anyone that didnt understand what the classes where when they made a toon.

they would, no doubt about that rune. and 7 points in survival. the rest of the talentpoints are more loose, since its mostly about ranged abillities hunters dont use. so id say ure free to choose between pet and melee escape/cc as u like.
i would still love to see what happens if warriors get to choose only plate&mail&leather armor with 40% intellect on it. that would be fun.
thats 80% damage offhand and 20% crit and 1,3 strike/3sec, double handed raptor (not sure how that dw proc works, is it raptor each hand with 1 cd or 2 cd’s) and 30% dmg on main hand. why would u ever leave melee for that? if that pvp bow procs of melee strikes (what a joke if it doesnt) add 50 strength to the procs as well.
versus 40% strength on the armorchoices we get, and 1 rune choice for ranged.
i consider this treason from blizzard. meleeweaving is offencive, but this is just too much.

no new attacks (expose on belt is better than steady) - 40% strength on gear we get, incl leather. non-scaling attacks - aimed shot (flat classic +damage)
MM hunter will be 50% of a regular dps’er when BiS. at best.

And you still do? I frankly don’t understand what you gain by trying to derail discussions of melee options. If you feel the ranged options are undertuned, give Blizz feedback to that effect instead of attacking people who would like to enjoy the new options they are trying to give us.
