Memory Leak

This has started happening quite regularly. After playing for an hour or two, the game crashes with an “out of memory” error.

When I check Task Manager, WoW is using over 12GB of RAM on its own and overall memory usage is maxed out. I have 32GB installed, so that feels excessive and not exactly normal.

My specs:

  • 32GB RAM

  • Nvidia RTX 4090 (driver 595.71)

  • Intel i9 13900K

  • Windows 11 25H2

This also happens with no addons enabled. I’ve tried lowering graphics settings, even though realistically this PC should handle WoW without breaking a sweat. (I do lower the settings because the micro stutters are frustrating)

Is anyone else experiencing this? It feels like something deeper is going on.

Guess it isnt just me then. Altho I have to admit I have only 16GB of RAM, i keep getting maxed out quite often (about same time as you mentioning it) and need to close the client.

Not just you. I’ve had it since the pre-patch. Game runs fine for anywhere between 1-4 hours, then suddenly task manager showing WoW using 12+gb of Ram (After previously using 4-6). Also causes my Disk drive to go to 100% usage causing the game to Freeze up/drop FPS down into the single digits.

Restarting the game frequently seems to reset it, so I can play for another x amount of time before it happens again.

Also using “/console gxrestart” as a macro frequently seems to help

Will also say numerous other guild members are encountering the same problem to varying degrees

I’ve found “temporary” fix for this.
Change to DirectX 11. Suddenly no memory leak. Back to stable 6-7 GB of ram used

IDk for me its very weird I experience the same issue ? Is there any way to report this to officials or is it being looked at ?

I have the same problem and i have been experiencing it for approx. 2 months now.

I have tried different settings etc, changing from DX11 to 12 and vise versa, but does not seem to do that much. Only by lowering settings to 7 in graphics and putting liquid low seems to drop the memory leak to roughly 9 to 10gb for most of the time, which still sucks alot.

I’d have hoped it would been fixed already, but seems like Blizzard is either incapable of fixing this or they just do not care enough. ( I also run 0 addons)

Just to chip in here are my specs:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
GPU: Nvidia RTX 5090
Ram: 32Gb
Windows 11

I contacted their Customer Support, but they cannot do anything.. After they instruct you to update your drivers (which does nothing) and try the DX11 to DX12 they just give up and tell you to seek help from the community, which is laughable, when no one in the community can fix the issue that is on their end.

I am not sure what you expected customer support to do, they are not the ones that do the coding. They probably don’t even have access to even LOOK at the codebase.

The developers are the ones you need to contact, and that can only be done via a bug report made in-game.

well it seems that the tech support in US forums seem to be proactive about it - Memory Leak after playing for 45 minutes to an hour - Support / Technical Support - World of Warcraft Forums - hopefully they will investigate this further and find the root cause :crossed_fingers:

Now over a month and it is still happening

Hey, just wanting to chime in, 32GB of RAM and I’ve also been getting crashes due to lack of memory since prepatch. No other game I play has this problem so its not a driver issue (which are all up to date)

Yeah same. My System is older with a 1080 TI GPU and a i7 8700k. I still can play other games as long and with pretty high graphic settings. I play on WQHD so its a bit harder for the GPU and still I can play games like Space Marine 2, Satisfactory (Late Stage), Cyberpunk, BF6, Broken Arrow, Squad and even Stellaris has no Problem 12 hours in one Game Save. So it is a Problem with WoW or the Battle.net Client….

Leaking again. Went to the Noblegarden boss and I was initially surprised how no one was around only to realize I’m in chromie time, eventually two other players swung by and by the time we killed the duck my RAM was at 98%. It had taken us a couple of minutes due to unfavorable lowbie scaling and my entire session has already been messed up.

Have spent the next 30 minutes afk away from the spot and nowhere close to Razor Hill or Orgrimmar and it just wouldn’t even start going down. I can only force a restart and hope I don’t encounter any other players during my session because any serious form of team play is out of the question since the game consistently does this.

Out of the last two weeks it had been doing great for several days in a row but then something broke again, on two different occasions.

Never happened before but this last week I have received the out of memory error several times. Also checking the status of the memory you can actually see the graph slowly rising constantly till it crashes. And its definitely Warcraft cus everything else is rock steady, but the Warcraft memory usage is just going mental its literally draining everything I got.

I just launched the game and it crashed straight way.. it says that wow the application had an overrun of a stack based buffer …. at the time I received a low memory warning and wow was using 70% of my memory. Can’t play the game.

I fiddled with a few things and rebooted and disabled the Steam client. The game had just enough spare to play the game. Haven’t had to do that before. See how it goes.

UPDATE: The problem turned out to be with a NVIDIA application that was recently updated. It is causing all kinds of problems and they are trying to resolve things. They changed their video game recording app and its not really working.

Did you find a fix for it? I still use my MSI GTX 1080 TI from like 2017…. I have the latest Version for the GPU that i got from October because they stopped the support after that :frowning:

Mhh its a bit dumb. I dont really see what is eating all my RAM beside WoW eating 12 to 18 GB until it crashes because it tries to get even more RAM. I see that my virtual Memory is being almost used to the brim and after that it overflows my physical RAM.

There is still a memory leak on blizzards side. No addons and things and after 90 Min of Raiding RAM is 95%. If I play longer in Raid or M+ it will crash with error not enough Memory:

1080 TI GPU
8700K CPU
Win 11 latest Update
32GB of Memory

Have you tried different pagefile settings?

What exactly do you mean? Set more Virtuel Memory? I can do that but it doesnt help i had it set manually to 80 GB and it didnt work either. Now iam back to auto settings so Win 11 can handle it. I tried everything DirectX11/12 switch. Lower Settings. Still 32GB full after 90 min of Raiding and it crashes out of Memory :frowning:
