Memory leak

Not sure if Blizz computers have 128 GB of RAM or something, but there’s a clear memory leak in the retail client. The game progressively gobbles up all available RAM and you have to restart the client every now and then. Even a minute after exiting the game the client still runs in the background using 900 MB of RAM before it flushes everything.

I’m on 64GB of RAM and have been playing hours on end without any crash. The memory allocation stays nicely below 32GB. Could there be anything else you have been running in the background? Might be a combination of things. Always difficult, memory leaks.

I also have 64 GB of RAM and have never experienced a crash due to memory issues. However, I have noticed a continuous increase in memory consumption, which is not normal. This happens even without add-ons.

32GB should not be normal I think, my previous pc only had 16 but I never saw usage go over 10 except for big events on patch or expansion launch days

I’m on a steady 13.8GB used. It’s not really changed in the past 30 minutes of gameplay.

Does it happen when doing particular content? What addons are you running?

my :alien: :flying_saucer: theory is, that blizzard is working with trump hand in hand, and this is made on purpose to increase the ram prices even further

jokes aside, i have it once per day, most likely when im using a portal to stormwind/silvermoon

or using convoke, everything goes high to the moon for 2-3 minutes, sometimes my game client gets frozen and i cant even close it with task manager lol

Idk about Blizzard but mine does.

Good, makes people take regular breaks from the game.

.GarabageCollector at the end of everything should fix this!

but on a serious note - memory leak is one thing, another one is refreshing “invisble” quest tracking like every frame.
Basically game checks if you are eligible to certain quests to trigger pop if you are not if not then do nothing. It accumulates trough enitre exmapnsions and it seems it is one, big monolith.

My guess is that engine is getting to the point where last titan can be last expansion pack before changing the engine.

Hmm, didn’t notice. But with RAM prices being what they are the game shouldn’t even use 8GB. I dunno what’s going on.

I think youre right, my game spasms out after an hour, usually around Silvermoon or when flying. Eventually the game and pc dosent respond for a minute or two, and then clears up a litle.

I’ve never really had crashes with World of Warcraft in a very long time, but since this expansion I’ve had two random crashes where the client just froze for no reason.

I have 64 GB of RAM, and if the client somehow manages to eat up all of that, then whoever is responsible for QA and the technical side of things seriously needs to review their work more carefully. Issues like that should not be slipping through.

Some people say they have not noticed anything, but there are definitely players who have seen problems with Midnight compared to previous expansions. Whatever the cause is, I just hope they manage to fix it soon.

The memory leaks exists since the Liberation of Undermine patch, or 11.1.5, I don’t remember. Eventually it will consume all available RAM memory (if you have 16GiB or less), and the CPU will start working overtime to compress and move memory data to the swapfile. At some point I think Resouce Manager mentioned WoW having like 18GiB total memory consumption.

It has only crashed 2 or 3 times for me since 12.0.0., but I cannot confirm if the crash was due to running out of memory.

The game is advertised as running on machines with 8GiB of RAM. Don’t come defending it because you have 8 times the minimum or 4 times the recommended amount.

They simply don’t optimize efficiently enough. But before optimization can take place, bug fixing has.

Personally haven’t had crashing due to this issue, but I’ve had regular lagspikes where the game becomes a slideshow for several seconds. This didn’t happen at all during DF (unless I count the crowded events when they first launched, but that’s a different issue) and for most of TWW. It first started being an issue around the last major patch of TWW I think.

Yep, this is happening exactly when memory consumption reaches nearly 99% of physical memory, and your PC / laptop has to start compressing and moving data to the hard drive to make extra space on the physical memory for the WoW.exe process.

I could buy 5070 for the price of my ram  I paid fraction of that few months ago

I’ve had 8 hour sessions the last few days and I’ve not had any memory leak issues. DO you use any addons, or nVidia AI coded divers!

Mr RAM millionaires.

If you bought it 12 months ago it was kind of ok… although it still felt like a rip off.

Up side, I don’t feel bad for buying at £400 for 64gb any more!

Also have 64 gb ddr5 rams

Not that you’re boasting.

I built a new PC back in October 2023. My old 2010 PC had 16Gb so I went for 32GB. I did think about 64GB.

Nothing in itself uses more than 16Gb but I do like to run linux virtual machines for messing about with.

What do you do with 64GB?
