Like come on, there’s definitely going to be meta, whats going to be meta?
Because i’m straight up re-rolling to be able to do some M+ properly. And this will be my 1st pre-patch/launch events. so i want to be prepared

The meta is only relevant when you are pushing extra high m+ keys or doing world first race. Or high pvp but thats a different meta.
And from the sounds of it you dont currently do those things. If by meta you mean the fotm class that does the moat damage / healing and the most op covenant combo, youll have to wait till much closer
we don’t know the meta yet because no tuning has been done so far
I mean like rouge in 8.2 and BM in 8.3
guess well need to wait for beta though.
It must be so sad not playing what you love and always looking for “the meta” and “the best”
I did play what i love, but blizz doesnt make it fun for some classes and/or specs :c
Then play what you love! Really, that’s the best you can do. Believe me, if you know your class/spec very very well you’ll perform a lot better than with a class you don’t really know but they say “it’s meta”.
Just play mage , that **** is always meta , both pvp and pve
unless you’re rank 1 in arena, world first raid raceing, or in the top 0.5% of m+ players, play what you find it fun, it won’t make any difference. numbers only come into count when you’re pressing your buttons perfectly and at the right time.
a bm hunter who only knows roughly what he’s doing, will be out dps’d by a perfectly playing ww monk or feral druid for example.
U wont know for a while, number tuning hasnt even happened, so nothings on concrete.
I’m totally going to play what i love, but for certain thing to get achieves im going to choose the better class though.
I don’t get the “unless you’re going for world first or arena rank1” argument. A demon hunter is atm better than ret paladin in both pvp and pve at every skill level. No matter what content you do be it mythic+8 or 1500 rating arena, DH performs better. But you make it sound like every class performs the same until 25+ mythic or 2.5k arena and after then class matters which is simply not true. And i don’t blame people for wanting to play a spec that performs well. You push higher rating/mythic+ key and it’s much easier to find groups.
As for OP’s question, mage is always a safe pick for both pvp and pve.
Death Knights and Druids.
Lots of utility, can fill multiple roles, great solo capabilities, has excellent Covenant choices, and received a horn of plenty through unpruning.
That’s my guess currently.
I’d say demon hunters are a pretty meta class.
Get it? Meta?..
Based on alpha feedback and the legendary choices available, early opinion is that Locks will be OP as fudge. (though turning has not taken place and I am sure lots will happen in between)
You forgot the small * and a line in a tiny font: “At any given moment in current expansion, Mage might or might not have a good spec, decent spec, viable spec, or even a WORKING spec for any of those activities, subject to change at any time, for a reason, or no reason at all. Because we hate mages and try to ensure they do not have more than 1 spec for anything despite them being class with 3 dps specs”
The horror… The horror! It’s so terrible, can’t unsee! Taking sanity damage here!
Humor aside, wouldn’t go for Mage or DK right now. Too much GCDs, too much borrowed power withdrawal when azerite, corruptions, essences go away. Shaman might be decent. DH won’t go anywhere from its god tier place. Shadow priest… Not gonna recommend that… Might cause hair pulling, screaming incoherently & loss of sanity.
Actually Havoc is in pretty bad shape on the alpha right now, some strange choices in talent arrangement by Blizzard has left it a bit of a mess.

Indeed, this looks like they’re mechanically in a tight spot. Would be a welcome change to no-brainer hypermobile faceroll that ALSO does top dps no matter whether it’s ST, AoE, cleave, burst, sustain, or what have you.
It depends if it is just straight up strong or because top player are able to play around their strength the most.
Like people inviting UH DK or Fire Mages and then pull 4 mobs at best.
