Mining - Metallurgy smelting

Alright, i just wanna share my thoughts on Smelting.

So when i made my alt i thought Hey, my main is a gatharer so this could be a smelter! So i invested 40 points in to Metallurgy and 20 in to Draconium. The plan was to make profits from Multicraft and Resourcefulness, but gues what…YOU CANT GET ABOVE 0% multicraft or 0% Resourcefulness…

5x rank 2 Draconium ore cost 135g and you Smelt it to 1x rank 3 worth 80g. With no chance of making more than 1 through multicraft.

Same goes for all other ores, NO way to make a profit. and thus, at least 40 points completely wasted.

Am i missing something? :stuck_out_tongue:

You forgot that AH prices in WoW don’t bear any relation to the difficulty of obtaining things.

Also that high-skill miners pull up R3 mats fairly regularly.

Basically the whole refining tree is pointless. I also wasted points in it. Honestly, when I looked at the smelting tree, I did not expect I would ever be able to loot rank 3 directly. Thought that was the point of the smelting tree. Turns out it’s just a dump to put knowledge points when the other trees are filled out to pretend that mining actually has something in it.

OTOH there’s not much worth having on mining anyway, so I don’t particularly feel like I missed out…

Yeah, my thought was also that it would at very least be very very rare to find rank 3 while mining. And at the time i thought to myself that professions seemed to be well designed, that smelting would have its place somewhere. that it would be an investment because people need high rank ores. Things i missed out on is mining while riding, chance to get Diamond on Rich veins.

I’m hoping they make smelting worthwhile in the future, so i’ll keep investing in it once i get mining while mounted…sigh

Yeah, I’ve made the same mistake. It’s superficial and they aren’t standing up to deep inspection at all. Several professions have trap specialisations with no skill ups behind them where you get stuck and need massive rep and gold investment to unlock another tab.

Beta professions, tbh.

I thought it might be profitable to refine Khaz’gorite ores up to level 3 (with the chance for Awakened Order) but after refining 300 silvers up to 60 golds, I only had 2 Awakened Order for my trouble, which no where near made up for the difference in cost of buying the silvers instead of buying golds.

Thankfully I wanted gold level ores to make the highest level pickaxe and sickle, so it wasn’t a huge loss.

its usefull if you’re a crafter mostly so it has its place in the game for a first choice but if you’re primarely a gatherer yeah rip
if you max out metallurgy 40/40/40 then you get a total increase of +120 base skill when mining all mining nodes, 50 coming from the first ring (40 knowledge spent and 2 +5 nodes) and 70 from each respective ore type (40 knoweldge spent and 3+10 nodes)
higher skill means higher quality ores, higher quality ores means higher base skill on all your crafts using that material
refinement is really mostly just usefull to refine all your old ores for higher crafting skill on your crafts once you start mining quality 3 regularly
its not the way to make the best gold if your plan is to sell the raw materials tho, for that its mining process/perception all the way to dump your first points into
