Hi All, Looking for advice on how to deal with rogues getting their opener on an mm hunter. I do a lot of rbgs and one of my main roles is base sitting/defending. But, i very often come up against rogues, and as mm I just feel like a sitting duck with few options to keep my distance. If a rogue gets hiw opener as soon as im out of stun i turtle, exhilaration/hs and use my kyrian potion, i disengage, mark, and flare the rogue, but by this time a half-decent rogue is on me again and i normally struggle to trap or gain much distance from there… What do you do ?
Remember your goal isn’t necessarily to win the 1v1, it’s to hold the base long enough for backup.
You can position far with flare on flag in camo to force them to try to cap, play to stall, kite to your own GY if you’re in trouble so you get instant body Rez in AB etc. You should also be watching the shape of the fights / enemy positions and clicking frames on battleground enemies or whatever you use so you can see incoming 20-30 seconds in advance and call someone to be ready to break off or float.
I’m not a hunter, I can’t help you with hunter specifics in the matchup, but I have done rbgs for some 10 years at this point.
The biggest thing to remember is as the defender you have the advantage. They have to cap the base to make their attack worthwhile. They have to start capping the flag out of stealth unless they find you beforehand (Which they shouldn’t).
For a start, stop using sniper shot and use the Feign death talent instead. You can feign out of trinket for the 90% damage reduction and not waste turtle straight away. Even if you don’t want that because you have Craven, sniper shot is considered a “meme” talent, as fun as it is.
Turtle should never be your first resort, I know it’s hard not to just slap it under pressure and I’m still guilty sometimes, but try to disipline yourself. You can Trinket>Feign>Scatter/Explosive trap to make distance. Don’t forget about concussive shot and tar trap, they hate slows. Don’t forget to hunter’s mark.
They only have 2 uses of shadowstep (unless they’re sub in burst window I believe), you just need to wait that out then kite. Don’t throw CC into Cloak of shadow too! They’ll just immune it.
If you blow all your defensives upfront, you’re gonna have a bad time.
Also you should have the slowing disengage, the damage reduction after feign and hunter’s mark damage reduction conduits if you can fit them in.
Not to say Rogue’s are easy for us. But you need to be more controlled and not panic in the opener.
Interesting suggestion, i never thought survival tactics would be a worthwhile choice while having craven. If anything, roar of sacrifice makes much more sense to me. Sniper shot is what i typically use when not base defending. Particularly on eye of the storm and focused in the centre, it is incredibly useful to have the yd advantage.
I use turtle after most rogue openers because i am stun locked and when a decent rogue gets a hit i am from 100% to 30% in seconds. I will try your suggestion although i am not confident trinket and feign cuts it here. The rogue only needs to shadow step you once and get one to two hits at that hp and you have lost the game. I’m not talking about average rogue players here, but well geared and skilled rogues. It’s a completely different ball game for a hunter. I would argue that mm hunters have a harder job in this counter than any other hunter spec.
there is really not much you can do, hunter is just not good enough
what i saw in some youtube videos and it worked in many cases was placing a freezing trap on your location, rogue jumps in gets frozen, which ruins his opener
I dont use camoflauge everytime. I check if the enemy has a rogue/feral/boomie in the teamfight. I keep track of them by targetting them via battlegroundenemies addon. If the teamfight stealthers arent visible, thats when I use camo to buy time in case they try to ninja.
I situate myself close to a LOS spot, put two traps under the flag. If they go for flag and get caught, I call for help and stall until the help arrives by LOS’ing and kiting. I always have my pet summoned while defending. Having roar of sacrifice on maps where you might have to defend bases is a good idea. A good rogue will sap the pet if he can, though. Try NOT to use turtle as long as you can.
If I get caught while in camo or If I get caught while camo is on CD(I put freezing trap behind me when I’m out of camo. some rogues get caught, good ones will attack you on the sides and avoid that), I use ROS immedately and check if the rogue has used shadow blades. If he doesnt have shadow blades and you waste trinket+turtle, you will die on the next go. You can most likely survive that without having to use turtle if he doesnt have shadow blades.
If the rogue used shadow blades, I use ROC and immedately trinket and scatter shot, aspect of the cheetah and kite, otherwise I’m dead. That usually gives you time to kite. Be careful about shadowstep/kidney when you dont have trinket, or you die. So be ready to pop turtle before the rogue can shadowstep you or you can put a trap behind you so he gets autotrapped.
If the rogue has shadowblades and evasion at the same time scatter shot will miss so I dont scatter shot, in that case I use trinket + turtle immedately.
Its been a long post and I may have forgotten to say some stuff, but hope this helps.
Keep in mind that rogue can avoid the trap by pre-using cloak of shadows.
Edit: Having mikanos instead of pelagos as a soulbind helps in those situations because of the 3 sec stun and auto potion usage below 35% hp. In my opinion mikanos is better than pelagos in RBGs since you wont be the only one damaging your oppenent who is getting heals and the mastery from pelagos wont help much.
I’ll probably suggest things your already know so sorry in advance.
Concussive shot on CD.
Hunters Mark up constantly.
Roar of sac helps alot with there opener.
Masters call and cheetah.
Ice trap at your feet for shadow step.
Binding shot at your feet for shadowstep.
Bursting shot must be hit.
I don’t like rogues they make me panic but some days I deal with them better than others.
When they run out of gap closers and you’ve got some distance, they basically just try and run away.
Another option race change to nelf, and never been seen first again.
Does RoS totally negates Master Assassin Opener ? Like they don’t crit at all then ?
I would play survival for defence.its the only spec that can recover rogues opener without trinket.insta sac opener.trap rogue and use mending bandage and kyrian pot. Then steel trap flare and mark, drink some coffee and tell your leader that rogue is there.stun rogue use aspect of the eagle and hit him hard. Use turtle only if rogue is offensive with evasion and you dont have trap or you cant kite.
just use roar of sacrifice so their opener is trash. scatter trap to get trinket, after that binding shot to get vanish, next opener you trinket and use feign death or turtle
you cannot create distance ever if both have all cds available. the rogue just got more in a short fight. just play for time till reinforcements arrive.
Yeah, it negates mages combust as well as you probably already know.
Play BM if ur defending flags or bases… as you get 2 pets
if you really want to do it as MM then take Explosive trap and keep ur pet in stealth
posistion the explosive trap on flag ( it has larger hit box) and ur tar trap and frost trap in nearby locations .
keep ur pet stealthed and nearby to attack the rogue while u are sapped
my experience:
- im only 1800 cr in rbg
Well you should have both if your issue is specifically dying to rogues imo, and Master Assassin slipped my mind so yeah. You can take roar too.
I rock Scatter/RoS/ST because I use the 90% damage res to block big hits.
They knock you 100>30 in seconds; Survival tactics is 90% damage reduction for 1.5sec + Resilience of the Hunter giving another X% for 8 seconds afterwards.
That gives you the second you need to roar and negates their opener entirely. You also wanna hunter’s mark them (especially with Marksman’s Advantage conduit for another damage reduction.)
I don’t think anything in the game can burst you through that actually, never mind rogues. It’s a lot easier to just panic press turtle, but those abilities in combination can save you from pretty much any opener, gimps fire mages too.
Not with Scatter shot/Binding shot baseline, you’re at least on par with BM, probably better. You can massively outrange shadowstep once you make distance too. Worst case, if you can’t kill them, kite and call for backup.
Go necro ez
