Must there really be a Lich king?

A powerful dragon could be a powerful tool. Alas, gone are the days of Galakrond. - Xal’atath

Wouldn’t be surprised if N’Zoth would try to use this bad boy again… and I think Gal was the first necromancer of Azeroth, considering his undead proto-dragon army

Nah, it was just a half-assed reason so they can include the Lich King in future expansions.

Never made any sense, how are the undead a greater threat when we just murdered all of the most powerful scourge members that were controlling everyone else.
Why wouldn’t they use those undead to kill us all then?

It was a silly ending and a waste of Bolvar.

And didn’t make much difference anyway as in place of the Scourge we now have the Forsaken wrecking the place with their endless supplies of green goo. (Yes I have to admit I’m bored of them lol-plagueing everything!)

“…there must always be, a Plot Hole…”

It does make sense if we assume that there are thousands upon thousands of mindless undead swarming the wastes of Northrend that would make a beeline straight down to Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms if the Lich King lost control of them.

Such a massive hivemind of unrelenting killing machines could very well pose a serious threat to settlements all over the world.

The problem here of course is that Blizzard failed to convey the remaining Scourge as a credible threat in terms of their raw numbers. Not that I blame them of course since doing that is incredibly difficult within the limits of gamescale where you have to take into account mob density and lag among other things.

One thing I never quite understood is if the lich king was now on our side (Bolvar) can’t he simply order the undead guys to kill each other off?

How EXACTLY would these mindless undead reach Kalimdor or the Eastern Kingdoms ? They can’t fly and being mindless they can’t create ships to ship themselves to Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms.

Guessing this is what she means. Or something like it:

Maybe.

Not all were mindless (for examples the bosses in ICC) - it’s very likely there were other intelligent Lieutenants who could manage to figure out how to build some boats.

Few thoughts on this:

  1. At the end of ICC Arthas revealed that he had pretty much planned for the champions to fight their way through to him as a way of forging “The greatest fighting force Azeroth has ever seen” and whom he planned to become the leaders of his scourge army as it set out to destroy all life on the planet.
This could suggest that the scourge we’d fought in Northrend was that part of his army he fielded to fool us into thinking he was fighting us, when we has actually leading us on.
In other words there may be a much much larger army up there one which was never defeated and which is now only held back by the Helm’s control.

  2. Bwonsamdi hinted that The Lich King plays a very important role in the realm of death - that may just be the “jailer of the damned” or perhaps there is more to it.

  3. We now know that the “Loa” who told Vol’jin to appoint Sylvanas as warchief were not Loa at all. Perhaps the shade of Terenas wasn’t actually Terenas either…

You do know a necropolis is a thing. They’re very good at transporting undead Scourge around, ya know, Naxx and all.

Marching underwater from Northrend to Kalimdor or the Eastern Kingdoms ?

Its impossible even in the world of warcraft

A bigger question is WHY mindless undead would march to Kalimdor or the Eastern Kingdoms.

Without someone to lead them they would just wander around Northrend being a local danger to the people living there.

Without leadership the Scourge is just not that big of a threat.

Without the Lich king or the crown of domination the few intelligent Lieutenants left don’t have the power to command the entire Scourge.

What would most probably happen would be a power struggle between the intelligent scourge left leading a portion of the scourge against each other.

Some might even join the forsaken or try to rejoin the Alliance.

And who is going to pilot them ?

Without the Lich King and the crown of domination no necromancer death knight or lich has the power to command the entire Scourge.

The waters of Azeroth are not that friendly… sharks, krakkens, Naga… sea giants. The whole “water is not that good for a corpse” thing
Hungry little fishes who could clean the rotting flesh from the bones - in fact that is their main reason to exist, to be a kind of sea-voltures…
They could march in to the sea…
…but would never walk out

You don’t need to control the entire Scourge, you just need to lure them into the Necropolis and get any sentient scourge to pilot it.

Darkfallen, Lich, Banshee, there are quite a few intelligent members of the Scourge, they’re not all mindless ghouls.

The whole “converted” Nerubian race…
The spider-folks are inteligent even as Crypt fiends , not to mention Crypt Lords… and they used the tol’vir/obsidian destroyers (who are also sentinent) way before the scourge
Actually the undead Nerubians are far more deadly and dangerous than the shambling scourge remnants…

Then you have one or two scourge warlords leading a portion of the scourge attacking the Alliance or the horde. Nothing Azeroths armies and adventurers can’t handle.

None of them have the power to control the entire scourge without the crown of domination.

Without the Lich king/crown of domination you have shambling zombies for the most part of which a portion can be controlled by some of the more intelligent undead.

A better storyline would have been the death of the lich king and the shattering of the crown of domination and scourge warlords fighting each other and the Alliance and the Horde to try and reforge the crown of domination to attempt to rule the entire scourge

Never underestimate what a small band of soldiers can do.
They naturally wouldn’t be attacking the capitals, no, they would start with small outposts and work up as they improved their power.

Don’t forget, a Scoruge started as some undead animals then a handfull of humans, a little village worth of them
Or the 90% converted nerubian race… the time line a bit murky

And the Cult of the Damned are still around till this day…

Not to mention a certain Lich, whos phylactery never really was recovered or destroyed…

All and all, with proper writing , fleshing out, the Scourge indeed could be a “thing”
But at the moment it is a sad joke
