My name is too offensive? Name change requested

Hi, I’ve got/had a Hunter on Golemagg (WoW Classic) called Bøwjob. For whatever reason it’s asked me to change my character name twice - I’m assuming as someone reported my name for being offensive?

Is this a bug or did someone actually report me? The same thing happened to a few guild members which is why I think it could be a bug?

AND if someone did… How on earth is Bøwjob offensive? It’s directly relevant to my Hunter. Like calling a warrior Meleejob…

Any advice here would be great! I’ve created a ticket in-game to appeal my name change, for now I’ve renamed my character Offensive.

Thanks!

I think its clever and harmless, however, there was a regular forum poster with that name for a long time, but eventually they got reported in game and forced to name change.

The problem with the grey area names, is you only have to get a bit of loot that someone else wanted, and they use it as an excuse to report you.

Name change requests is not just “someone”, but lots of “someones”, and then a GM has to investigate, and if they agree, the name change is triggered.

If you just change your name to something… Equally offensive, or back to the same name, well, people have ended up banned for that.

Bow, at a glance can be seen as blow for some and that word is truly offensive. Try Rangejob, instead…

I’ve already renamed my character Offensive (temporarily until I get a GM response) hoping a GM will let me keep my original name.

I just think it’s stupid that a name like that can be reported as offensive. There are FAR worse names around that are floating around…

I actually think that was his intent.

Hence the forced namechange.

Thanks! I see how that can be problematic but that shouldn’t be allowed? Surely those types of reports should be ignored as they’re reporting based on the wrong reasons?

I appreciate that it can be misread by people but there are thousands of words that can be deemed as ‘too close’ and if they could all be assumed as offensive or inappropriate then there wouldn’t be many suitable names to use.

I guess I’d like to know (from the people who have reported my name for being offensive and not out of anger of anything else I.e. being killed in PvP) how “Bowjob”, as it is, has offended them?

And secondly, I’ve checked the Code of Conduct and the name doesn’t go against any of the terms (from what I can see)…

My point is my name is being forcefully changed based on others inappropriate thoughts… There is a reason why actual rude, inappropriate terms and profanity are blocked from being used.

We’re playing World of Warcraft… Not word association :joy:

Thanks for all the responses by the way!

The name is too close to a sexual term, names like this are often picked to to try deliberately skirt around name filters to get names normally banned. I could understand why people would be reporting it as inappropriate.
