In the arena tournaments addons are not allowed I think. Some time ago the did allow them to see dimishing returns though because not being able to track those put several comps into a disadvsntage.
You can use them to review your personal performance, but you are not allowed to blame another player for low DPS or something similar. Although DPS is rarely a problem in regular content (it’s more about avoiding or dodging mechanics, because several of them can and will instakill you), and if you play Savage-raids then you’re probably in a free company (guilds in FF) anyway and you know what you’re doing.
There are no other good MMOs.
If there were. WoW wouldnt be what it is.

I’d rather have addons and the ability to enjoy complex and very detailed boss fights than to fight a boss that even a monkey can beat.
Have you seen other MMO bosses? they’re child play, they can’t even be considered a boss, they’re mini-boss level in comparison to WoW and so… so slow.
Besides, addons improve the game, not lower its quality.
Look at Skyrim, from a normal cool game to a legendary game that I have over 1k hours playing.
If blizzard allows cosmetic modding and higher forms of modding that don’t give players Physical advantage then the game could evolve into something much, much cooler.
But probably they don’t because of how hard it would be to stop players from giving themselves stuff like +999% damage or health.
One of the reasons WC3 Reforged sucks, is because blizzard pulled back on people’s ability to get creative with modding the game.
Anime fights and stuff like that are no more in WC3Reforged.

You can use 3rd party software for addons in FFXIV. I have not heard about anyone being penalised for using them unless they start talking about using them in the game chat and get reported.
There is a combat log 3rd party software with DPS meter included and you can upload combat logs to FFLogs.
You can also get “skins” for the meter for your game window to make it look nice.
wow is how many years old? People want something fresh.
Now when these fresh MMos are as old as wow then you can start comparing.
Something tells me they wont be around as long.

The problem is that the addons take away from the spectacle of the boss. I don’t look at bosses, I look at bars and numbers and meters. It turns the game into something text based. I would rather have impressive bosses that are fun, provide spectacle, and don’t require me to cover my screen in bars and numbers.
Allods Online still holds the best raids in any MMO I’ve seen. Great visually, spectacular bosses, spectacular art, the complexity is up there with WoW’s hardest raids, but because there’s no boss addons, you’re allowed to appreciate the difficulty and action spectacle of a boss.
Weakauras and DBM lower the quality of the game - they spam you with ugly interface, numbers, garbage, they scream at you, they cover your screen in awful blocks. It’s disgusting. You have to use them if you want to do higher tier content, but it is actively detrimental to the quality of experience you get from the game. People don’t use them because they improve the quality of the game, the visuals, the action, the gameplay. They use them because of the information they provide, no matter how ugly it is.

You are free to turn off all addons though, infact this is what I do once I have some bosses on farm and sometimes for the first time I fight said bosses.
I’ve went in castle nathrian pitch-blind without taking any prior look at tactics at all, with no addons, it was a good experience actually, and not as different from having addons as you’d expect.
That’s for you, I like weakauras because instead of my eyes darting around my screen, I can focus on the middle of the screen and enjoy the actual fight, here you are contradicting yourself, since one of the functions of weakauras is to better tidy up the UI and place important information wherever you want.
Bosses today are this complex because of DBM, did you watch what happened in classic? I don’t want classic level bosses.

In FFXIV addons aren’t as required as in WoW because you can already completely change and adjust your UI in so many ways.
The savage and ultimate fights are very very difficult but more scripted than WoW fights (not necessarily a bad thing) so missing DBM/BW etc isn’t as noticeable imo.
Game don’t need many or any add-ons if it’s finished. Toogable options.

Do you think it will be any different if Shadowlands has 15 years of optimization? Classic folded out the way it did because it is a good game. 15 years of optimizing a game tends to do that. Diablo 2 had the same story - when it came out and for years after that, we thought beating Hell difficulty solo is something that takes months. People now do all 3 difficulties in 8-10 hours. This is because Diablo 2 is a good game.
Bosses need to be challenging, of course. But please don’t act like Classic bosses weren’t challenging and fun for years before people developed the speed running strategies. What you’re probably forgetting is that the people who steamrolled Classic content have been playing that game for 15 years non-stop.
I’ve moved my portrait and my target portrait closer to the middle of the screen so I can more clearly see my own health and the enemy casting bar.
Not when the boss strat requires you to have certain weakaura to get the proper formation and tactic to work. And yes, there are bosses that absolutely require you to install specific weakauras. Hungering destroyer on mythic is one. You cannot execute the team’s strategy without turning your screen into absolute garbage pile. You need the weakaura to assign markers to people so they know where to go, you need to track miasma timers and what have you. It was fine on Normal and Heroic - I played them only with Details! on to try and rise in the dps charts and measure my performance.
In general, it’s not fair to tell anyone who does endgame, even casually, that “Oh you can totally disable that massive advantage”. That’s not how endgame in all games works.

blizzard pretty badly needs to add a LOT more UI optimisation imo. It’s pretty bad that we need a bunch of addons all over the place to get anything done.

Completly untrue ,you can do hungering mythic without any addons or even with just limited ones . You do not need anything just have 4 groups pre assigned a weak aura that the raid leader has will mark players to move to the markers on the ground. And you either a let the raid leader call which person needs soaking when or b have dbm/bigwigs shout your hp in say and people judge it. Thats all i listed 2 things that can both be on the raideaders screen .
Blizzars has tried so hard to make the bossees have more visual ques. Did you knew that the boss looks like hes slaming the ground beforr he does a ton of aoe dmg ? Did you knew his mana bar is actually a timer for when he devours ? Did you also knew you have a range around you on when you have to drop balls.
If this was 5 years ago you wouldnt have any boss energy representing mechanics ,no visual que and you would require range checkers to not murder everyone around you.
You are not giving blizzard any credit for how much they are trying to improve the boss fights and ques to them ( they still have to improve the ui alot ,but even that shows almost everything you need ,just cant show enough debuffs,buffs on raid frames)

It is a bit strange although Destiny 2 has purportedly more players than Old School Runescape but less daily players. Still of all the top 10 WoW still tops both players and daily players although how the information is calculate I don’t know.
