Name changing

Why, hello there, fellow forum users. Today, I bring you a very serious topic that requires the utmost attention. When Shadowlands launches, character gender changing will be moved to the barber shops because it was “sending the wrong message”. If this is the case, then why isn’t the same thing being done for name change? People who go through gender changes usually don’t keep the same name.

So, Blizzard… What’s it going to be? You wouldn’t want to “send the wrong message” over this as well, would you?

Do the right thing

irl name changes are not free either (nor are sex changes but you take what you can get)

You’re not the first to bring it up, there are several threads on it, the most recent is this one.

Sadly I dont think they will do it, people would just swap gender back and forth for free name changes.

Which is why you’ll pay a some in game gold for gender swapping. Seems only fitting that same is done regarding name changing, no?

Paying ingame gold seems fair.

Each time you change it the cooldown should be longer though (or something similar to stop people from abusing it for… nefarious reasons)

Well, of course… Dear, good, old Blizzard didn’t do this solely to be in a certain crowds good graces, did they? If they truly care and support the cause, this is the next logical step

I reserve the right not to say anything which may later be used against me in court… wait… wut?

Seriously though, I suppose if there is a high gold cost on gender change then it’s possible… but everything else on the barber costs next to nothing.

Oh, I wouldn’t worry. The court of public opinion love these sorts of social issues.

I see no issue with having free name changes, however it should be left on a very long cooldown so that it can’t be abused.

Wonderful ideas.

It is interesting and I would actually want that as well  It could give some problems though… AH seller ID and raiderio/warcraftlogs use realm+charactername to track the character… and if everybody can change it often the data will get messed up…

Easily fixed by having it on a long cooldown, let’s say a couple months, and by implementing a system similar to Steam’s; where you go to someones profile and next to their name there’s a dropdown that reads “This user has also played as:”.

The long cooldown could work yes  the other system would be helpful, but data would still be very difficult to work with… if 500 on my server had had the name salainne during the past 3 mounts, I would not be able to use that data for anything really

Is that common, though? Only people who I’ve seen with similar names are all the boring Illidan variations Demon Hunter players picked in the beginning of Legion :unamused:

Don’t forget about Arthasx, Árthass, Arthaslol and all their brethren

A couple a months?
At least 6. Preferably a year.

Hey, I’m not opposed to that. Let’s compromise.

Names don’t send wrong messages. They don’t send any messages at all.

Gender is sending all sort of messages everywhere these days.

I don’t know  Just read another thread about someone with a good raiderio score who where not good at the dungeons and got the acheivements for doing it… as in, that character had never been there before… It could be because of name changing, but cannot be sure ofcause. A long cooldown would fix that though

Because:

Changing your gender Doesnt change Players knowledge of you.
Changing your name does.

a Player can be a Toxic player and go so far as to be hated and simply change your name Removing the concequences of your actions in the community.

making it free would be a 1 second Redemption for every player with a Bad name. When people ragequit groups and more we write ur character name. so we know for future not to invite you. and compile a List of players thjat we personally black list from playing with.

your name change would defeat this immediately and make it REALLY hard for players to recognise your name for good and bad reasons.
