With all the new customization getting ready for Shadowlands, I think it’s high time to allow players to have at least a single apostrophe in the name.
It would finally allow races like trolls and elves to have lore-friendly names if they wish, it would also increase pool of available names. With Blizzard policy of not reusing names no matter how long the account lies dead, it would be VERY useful.
Especially on high pop/full realms, making a new character is 1 minute of choosing your race, class and looks and then 5 hours of trying to get a name that’s not taken and has no tarded characters in it (ľščťžýá etc).
On my latest night elf character (druid for a change, already got DK, DH and hunter), after trying for over an hour to no avail, I just opened an alphabetical list of Welsh names and went one by one till I finally got one to pass. I don’t love the name, but at least it’s a name not something created by faceplanting your keyboard as seems to be the norm these days.
I agree with something like this or spaces / last name. Always takes a long time on my main two realms to name characters because almost everything is taken, even a lot of the names with special characters are starting to be unavailable a lot now.
No you couldn’t (well not unless they’d half ar5e it completely). It’s entirely too easy to make a rule that you need at least a single character before and after apostrophe, or that the whole name needs to be at least 3-4 characters long.
Elder Scrolls online launched with working naming system. You could pick a single apostrophe or up to 3 hyphens (also allow longer names than the current what, 9-10 characters we have?). Works like a charm too. It’s only about willingness to spend a little money to change the system.
There’s no need to go for more than 2 apostrophes for naming (with the rule they are always preceded and followed by at least 1 letter). There are already PLENTY of really stupid names you can’t even pronounce since some people DO just bash the keyboard randomly to get a name.
SWTOR had a last name feature if I remember right, but theirs was a bit half-a$sed (or better, depends on how you think about it) - you could choose a last name, but that last name would be SHARED by all characters on your account.
And while lore-friendly surnames in SW universe are ambiguous enough to cover a range of races (unless you’re a Twi’lek, tough luck, different naming conventions - unless you wanna be an ar5e to your own twi’lek and do to their name what ‘civilized’ galaxy does to their names - splitting them when they see fit into given name and surname… like poor Aaylas’ecura becoming Aayla Secura so heaven forbid humans wouldn’t have trouble addressing her as miss surname), in Warcraft that wouldn’t really work too well.
After all, unless you’re a ‘noble’ or have a ‘title’ more likely, you likely don’t HAVE a last name. And a single player hogging a name like Hellscream would just make everyone else angry (and jealous)
Then we have an entirely different problem with TITLES becoming SURNAMES in WoW. After all, Garrosh had NO RIGHT to the Hellscream name. It was not family name (orcs don’t have those, they only have CLANS), it was the TITLE of his father for his glorious battle shouting skills. As far as I know, titles like that should NOT be hereditary.
As far as I can remember on top of my head, the only races that use surnames for most of their populace are elves (night elves a bit less commonly than the other 3 races), dwarves, gnomes and humans (mostly middle and upper class of humans, peasants don’t really need surnames after all, they are commodity, not people with rights :D) - and I’m counting the gilnean/kul tiran/forsaken among humans for naming since they are the same originally.
Please stay off forums if you have nothing constructive to say
If you bothered, you’d know that the reply to your poor excuse for a joke was in the end deleted from the draft since Blizzard frowns upon making fun of id1ocy (perils of being based in USA I think), the rest were general thoughts on the naming and surnames people mentioned in the topic.
Actually, you need to keep off the forums, mis spellings of swear words isn’t allowed.
Another reason to keep off the forums is your apparent lack of a sense of humour.
And third reason for you to keep clear of the forums is a rather nasty habit of insulting other forum users.
I’s like to name my character (picks up a pen and drops it on the table with a clunky sort of sound), It’s spelt Nippl-e and would use a special character, if the OP’s suggestion is taken up then the hyphen would have to be replaced by an apostrophe.
Not constructive ?
Well how would Blizzard police the naming of characters using inappropriate words with letters divided by an apostrophe.
