Need help choosing a class!

Help! I’m currently stuck in a loop of creating all sorts of characters and just leveling them to 50 or less. Some classes I’ve done more than once… But I just want to find one and stick with for a while. I dont want this current army of alts mess that I have at the moment.

Some insight of what I plan to do:
-most activites that are solo able. I like solo stuff (but but this is an MMO!!)
-random BGs, if Dragonflight does the gearing system right.
-profession stuff, which isnt really class locked. but I might miss some usefull advantage that certain classes have over others.
-achievements and collecting stuff.
-occasional dungeons or raids.

things I (probably) wont do:
-arenas. never liked them.
-mythic dungeons. I might try them, really, but they also seem stressfull with timers and stuff. We’ll see.

I have leveled almost every class to 50 atleast once. The exceptions being:

-Priest. they have 2 heal specs, and I cant really imagine myself playing a healer for too long at max lvl. Shadow seems like a budget affliction without a pet, and a shadowform I cant stand.

-Death Knight. I might be sleeping on this class, but they seem boring. They just slowly lumber around and spread their diseases. They have a resource system I’m not too fond of. I could be wrong, ofcourse.

Whatever class I stick with, I want to use all three specs. Since I probably wont play a healer, those classes are currently out of question. That still narrows it down to half the classes: Mage, Hunter, Rogue, Warlock, Demon Hunter and Warrior

-Mage. I might ditch this, but being cursed like I am, I can still find appeal in what they do. I like the theme of mages. They have some usefull tools and utility. Their weakness, as far as I know, is they arent solo friendly. They have no pet to tank for them, and cant face tank like melees. They are also a bit random in their gameplay from what I remember. All 3 specs fishing for procs. Need insight.

-Hunter. Currently one of my main options. Good at solo. Good toolkit. Different playstyles. Rotations I dont hate. Mobile. I dont like mail armor but thats a minor thing, really.

-Rogue. My most played class through my wow history. stealth is good. responsive gameplay(?). dont know how hot they are at solo play atm, I played mine mostly from TBC to MOP. Need insight.

-Warlock. Similar situation like hunter. trading mobility for defense. A bit more ramping up compared to a hunter. Cloth is cool.

-Demon hunter. I honestly like their simple rotations. Their mobility is really fun. Cool theme and armor/weapons. Might feel lacking in their tool kit. I dont know how good they are at solo play. I have heard Vengeance is good for solo? Need insight.

-Warrior. Similar to Demon Hunters imo. Simple rotation, good mobility, meh-ish tool kit. Dont know if Prot is capable of soloing or not. Need insight.

If you can make any sense this rambling mess, well, great! Thanks for reading if you made it this far. I appreciate it!

Life as an alt-oholic…
If you have tried and leveled all classes you should figure yourself what you like and prefer, hard for others to say.

Sometimes its not just the gameplay of the class, its the lore, the feeling, mogs, races available and so on that also matters, which is very subjective.

How about the new class, Dracthyr? Maybe wait until DF an roll one ?

Always had the same issue. You dont have to stick to one main. But above 3 is a pain

Yes, I understand. I have leveled twice in shadowlands to 60, which I really dont favor. So I want my third time to mean somethin, to be a class I stick with, so I dont have to do it a 4th time.

I guess my question/post is a bit more towards Mage/Rogue/Warrior/DH’s: how are they at max level? Are my hunches about them corrrect, or do they take an interesting turn along the way from 50 to 60 etc does their gameplay change drastically?

And again, I agree! I take most things into consideration when choosing characters. Be it race, faction, mogs or what professions would fit them. I usually take forever to come up with names that I like, fit the character and are available. I feel cursed with this analysis paralysis or whatever its called.

I dont know about drakthyr/evokers, personally. They didnt really catch my eye initially, but who knows in the future.

edit @Floppikatten
You might be right! Maybe I should go in with the mindset of having 3 or 4 characters instead of 1. That way you could also have some profession leeway for yourself.

Meditate on this I will.

Sounds like you’re best sticking to Hunter, you get the tools for every occassion.

Go for Druid. You can be tank, healer, ranged dps or melee dps for the occasion. Also easier to do open world events in flight form.

To help you understand my opinion, I am a very casual who has all classes at 60. I have them all, but I don’t play them all. I set them all up so they can do their Torghast and world quests and LF* and all that, and they can farm and cover all the professions and so on, but I spend 80% of my time split between my Mage and my Paladin, who have been my two characters since I started.

I have always liked having two characters with entirely different skillssets and feels, so that when I’m getting a bit tired of one, I can switch to the other.

Starting at … ummm, Legion I suppose, I could say that my Hunter and my Demon Hunter probably occupy 10% of my time between them. They are both so natural and pleasant to play that when I have something to do other than on my main two, I ususally pick up one of those. All the other characters probably share the final 10% of my time between them. (Hm. Maybe I should check the /played to see if my impression matches reality … or is that prospect too scary? :stuck_out_tongue: )

OK, so first to what I can say about your specific questions.

Nothing plays very differently at 60 than it does at 50. The main difference you will eventually feel is between a 50 in levelling gear and a 60 in end-game gear. Every 50 will feel vastly more fluid and responsive once you get it to 60/220+

ANY tank spec solos fine, better than any DPS spec. That includes boith Prot Warrior and Vengeance Demon Hunter. If you have a DH, just swap to Veng for a while and see, but WARNING! GIVE IT TIME. Vengeance playstyle is VERY different from Havoc, and pretty much everything else. I’m not especially fond of it, but it works. It took me a solid week when I first determined to try out Vengeance just to grasp what I should be doing. Once you understand it, and are comfortable with your build, it’s fine. It’s not complicated - it’s just different. Don’t reject it after two hours just because you can’t immediately feel comfortable with it.

As a HUGE fan of both Ret and Prot Paladin for solo and casual group play, I would suggest you think again about ruling out anything with a healing spec. In the case of Paladin and Druid, your other specs inherit a very decent chunk of healing, which boost your self-sustain, which is so important for soloing. (Also, Paladin has the best transmog in the game :stuck_out_tongue: )

I could definitely see a coherent choice of Hunter and Demon Hunter. Both in the S-tier of soloing, boith always competent in all content, a mix of melee and ranged.

The answer is always: Hunter!

@Mirãge

I see what you mean, and I agree! Druids have a silly amounts of tools and utility for most occations. They can do almost anything.

But… I dont really like being shapeshifted 24/7. I know, that might sound petty, but I like seeing my characters armor and weapons and stuff. I have a similar issue with monks. They fight with there bear hands and stuff, which is fine really, its their niche. But it bothers me somehow that they arent using weapons.

@Brewni

Both hunter and warlocks are high on my radar currently. DH’s a bit behind, but also present. Are they really that OP in the open world? Is it as vengeance or havoc? Also, how do they fare against big chunky mobs, or in old raids that should be “solo-able” but arent yet for some reason?

@Gráinne

More DH feetback, I appreciate! I might have narrowed it down a bit, for now. Between DH, Hunter and Warlock.

About paladins, one of my 2 current 60s are a paladin. And I agree they are good at solo. They might be my favourite tank of the ones I’ve tried so far. But thats also kinda where it ends. I only like prot from paladins, ret is a bit meh, its alright but there are better melees imo. And holy is probably my least liked healer of all.

Thanks for the feedback, all! I really appreciate it!

OK then: it’s between DH and Hunter.

I say this with a lot of clarity. When you compare Hunter with Warlock, I find it very hard to see why you would ever choose Warlock for your stated purposes.

Warlock has nice added functionality for groups - summons to M+ dungeons, soulstones, healthstones. Spread DoTs can be devastating to some boss encounters in a raid. Demonic Gateways can cheat some raid mechanics.

I give Warlock all that. But from what you say, these are not things that will play a big part in your game.

But Hunter can at least match Warlock in every other area. And Warlocks are SOOOOO SLOOOOOOW compared to Hunters. Demo requires ramp-up to call the imps. You can get a coffee while Chaos Bolt casts. And for questing and BG Aff has to cast like 5 or 6 DoTs and wait for them all to slowly tick down.

Druid, Hunter, DH or Evoker.

Make it Druid/Hunter vs DH/Evoker. Flip a coin. Take the winner. If you have doubts about the outcome take the option that lost since youre drawn to it. Repeat the process for the remaining two classes.

Alright. You’ve conviced me to rule out warlocks. I agree with what you say. I really like having mobility. And I’m not too fond of the ramp up time in warlock combat. Its fine for boss fights sure, but how ofter would I fight bosses compared to regular mobs? I do like cloth over mail though lol, but I wont let that be a deciding factor. Its minor.

@Kretías

Funnily enough I did decide through a coinflip like a few days ago. I was gonna delete one of 2 characters to reuse their names I liked. The “loser” was a DH. So I decided, if I’m gonna delete this to reuse their name, might aswell login and send gold and stuff.

Then while going to the mailbox I got reminded of their fun mobility. I though, hey this isnt so bad. Might try a dungeon or 2…

Lets just say the DH didnt get deleted. But I agree, coinflips are underrated and usefull.

So its down to DH and hunter it seems! I should try some vengeance on DH to get a feel of it. If not, hunter seems the solid choice.

Again, thanks for the help all! I didnt honestly realistically expect to get somewhere, but looks like I did.

My take on your question to Brewni.

I think DHs are not that OP, but Havoc always feels OP. Havoc is so active and fast-paced-feeling. Like an old Batman cartoon - Kapow, Swa-a-p, Whamm, Zwap, If they souped up the animation and sound for Chaos Strike, Havoc would be a full-on pinball machine. Havoc was genuinely OP in Legion and to some extent BfA, as is usual with “Hero Classes”, but they’re not out of line now. But they still feel awesome.

And they move like nothing else in the game.

Against, say, Zereth Mortis rares, who are the current “big chunky mobs” of world-content endgame, Havoc’s self-healing is rather limited, and that’s where you will feel your superpowers fading and your Batmobile stalling. That’s why you put in the effort to learn Vengeance, and keep it in your back pocket to switch to when you need it.

In that way, DH is kinda the opposite of Paladin. Paladin has an awesome-feeling tank spec, and (at least in my opinion) a very decent DPS spec. DH has an awesome DPS spec, and a competent tank spec.

P.S. Bonus Vengeance tip: Choose Concentrated Sigils talent, no matter what Icy Veins says. I have no argument with Icy Veins for “real” VDHs, but for your casual beginner purposes, you do not want to be manually placing sigils every time.

I find Demon Hunters/Druids are fun to play, they have good mobility and flight form is kinda overpowered in the open world. Demon Hunters are also very good at soloing.

One benefit of DH, if you decide to go that route, is that (barring the occasional trinket) havoc and vengeance use exactly the same gear. Havoc’s mobility is better, but if you’re soloing content and you can’t manage it as havoc, it’s easy to switch to vengeance.

I would suggest a cooking class.

Cookingskills are invaluable.

I love death knights. I love their lore and the bluey frost theme. But i haven’t mained it since legion. I just bring it along as i have done mostly everything on it and want to keep working on that.

But in shadowlands i picked up my warlock and demon hunter as mains. Both are great at soloing stuff.
Warlock for the self healing and to use combat res on yourself is valuable.
Demon hunter has the most fun tank spec and i keep switching between tank/dps all the time and i have no struggle at all to solo current content.
Also warlock has the coolest tier sets of them all.
I also love the lore of demon hunters and i can’t stop comparing a demon hunter to a witcher

And demon hunters (nelf) has the funniest /chicken sound.

I used to suffer from severe altoholism as well.
When i started playing, in the mid of BFA all i wanted was to play DH and play Alliance since their fantasy and aesthetic is just me, to my dismay i found out i had to level another class to 70 at the time, and the majority of players are on Horde.
I came from FFXIV where you have have all classes available on one character by switching weapon type, and factions are completely irrelevant.
So coming to WoW and having to decide on only one class was incredible hard. I leveled all classes to 20-30 got bored, and started a new one.

One day i sat down and started thinking hard about what i actually wanted to do. I obviously wanted to reach endgame some day. I wanted to be where the majority of players are.
So i had to go Horde, that was one choice, then i decided on a race, well blood elves were the most appealing to me, that was another choice nailed down. Then i had to decide on a class.

Paladins were always somewhat appealing to me, so i decided to give it a real run.
Force myself to stay with that character for a while, and i did start to like it, it actually gave me a sort of a tingling feeling after a while. Hard to describe, it just felt like the right class to play for me.
I joined my first guild there, got my first in-game friend on that character, did my first transmog run, and generally learned the game on that character, i reached BFA endgame on that character as well.

Then after a while, the love did die a bit out, after i learned the limitations of the Paladin class, and the terrible mobility was slowly starting to get to me.
I decided to finally make a DH, and it’s the class that keeps me playing today.

The rotation is simple, but it’s busy. So you’re always pressing buttons, even if it’s basically one 1-2-3.
The mobility is unrivaled, and you can do so much with glide, falling was never a problem again, i could get to places other races can’t without flying. Endgame content is also so much easier as DH got the utility it needs, and your mobility can allow you to make mistakes and recover from them. It’s just a fun class all around, and it’s excellent for solo play.

I always felt there were constant restrictions in WoW. Playing WoW is essentially about accepting compromises.
I wanted to play alliance, and be a Void elf DH, i can’t.
I wanted to play druid in horde, but all the race choices are unappealing to me. I really miss that freedom from FFXIV.

I still want to play alliance, and now that the Evoker class is coming soon, and all the cross faction stuff. I might just switch soon, all i need now is Void elf DH’s and i’ll leave this god forsaken Horde.
