My network card ‘broke’ and I need to get a new one - I am not techy! I know I need to get a PCIe card, preferably wirless. Any recommendations that aren’t tooooo expensive please?
Do you mean the network port on your computer’s motherboard?
What machine is it you’re using?
My motherboard is ASUS® TUF H310M-PLUS GAMING - the card was WIRELESS 802.11 AC1200. On Saturday it just stopped connecting to the internet. I have bought D-Link Wireless AC1200 DWA-582 network adapter to replace it but everytime I start WOW it won’t connect with blz51901016 error. Internet is fine and son is playing no problem
If the network card works but WoW has problems then it’s good to troubleshoot the problem as it may be that you don’t need another card. You could try tracerouting https://eu.battle.net/support/en/article/7870 to see if there are no problems with reaching the service. Some reviews of this card seems to mention driver problems so it’s worth checking if you have the latest ones and if the connection is stable.
There isn’t a whole lot to go on but basically the error you get is about your system not meeting the minimum specs.
Now, it looks like the card you bought does support the newer/faster wireless standards so it’s likely just a configuration problem.
First, you mention your son is playing just fine, i take it you mean on another computer that’s on the same wifi network ? I’m also not sure if you mean he’s playing wow or just other games.
One thing to check is if you’re connected to the right network. If you click the Networking icon in the lowerright corner of the screen, it should pop up the list of WiFI networks that are available. Make sure you’re connected to the right one there. It’s also not uncommon for some routers to be listed twice (different speeds, slow and fast), if that’s the case for you, then try switching over to the other one.
Another possible source of the problem could for example be the DNS server setting.
I’m going to assume you’re on Windows 10, press [WindowsKEY] + i
on the keyboard, that should open the settings app. Click on Network & Internet
. There should be a link near the bottom there that says View your Network Properties
, click that one.
You could copy/paste that info here (there’s a copy button on the bottom),
if there’s anything personal in there like the name of your network you can change that or leave it out. We’ll mostly just be interested in 4 addresses (IPv4 address, IPv6 address, default gateway and the DNS servers), and what it says at Connectivity and Link speed.
If you son plays wow over the same WIFI network as you, then it could be helpful to post the same information from his computer (exact same procedure).

I hope that makes sense to someone! My son isn’t playing wow but plays a lot of streamed games etc. I was playing fine until Saturday morning when I lost connection and nothing I did would make it connect (uninstall, disable, etc). The new card connects to the internet fine - it is on the right network etc - but as soon as I started WOW the connection dropped and I got the error. This computer is not quite 2 years old and has been fine up to this point.
Yea that’s helpful. Basically it shows the wifi is working fine at 520Mbps (the Link speed), which is more than enough for wow.
It shows you have both a working IPv4 and IPv6 network within your house, which is good. Judging by the DNS servers, i assume you’re using Virgin as ISP.
Nothing here looks necessarily wrong or out of place to me.
There are 4 things that come to mind, that i would try if i were in your position, and afterwards check to see if the problem with wow is resolved. If you try one and it doesn’t help you can undo the changes, the exact same way as you made the initial change.
1) Restart Router
If you hadn’t tried this before already, restart the router and/or modem you have in your house. Just unplug the power, wait a few seconds and plug it back in.
2) Network profile.
In windows, when you click the network icon in the lower right of the screen, and it shows the list of of wifi networks. Click the network you’re connected to and then click properties. It will probably be listed as a public network there, which is the default. if this is the case, switch that to private. It;s possible your old network(card) was set to private but the new one is not, that could have firewall-related implications.
3) Switching to Google DNS servers
In windows, press [WindowsKEY] + i
on the keyboard, that should open the settings app.
- Click on
Network & Internet
. - There should be a link near the bottom there that says
Change adapter options
, click that one. - Right click the
D-Link
adapter →Properties
. - You’ll see a list of supported protocols, do not change any of the checkmarks
- Click
Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)
, so that it is selected - Click the
Properties
button below - You’ll notice both the
IP address
and theDNS server
sections are currently set toautomatic
. - Switch the
DNS server
option toUse the following
, and enter8.8.8.8
as Prefered server and194.168.4.100
as Alternate. (The first is Google, the second is Virgin). - Click
OK
on both the screens to confirm - Perhaps, to be safe, restart the computer, or disconnect (and then reconnect) the WiFI connection
4) Disable IPv6 to see if this relates to the problem
In windows, press [WindowsKEY] + i
on the keyboard, that should open the settings app.
- Click on
Network & Internet
. - There should be a link near the bottom there that says
Change adapter options
, click that one. - Right click the
D-Link
adapter →Properties
. - You’ll see a list of supported protocols
- Disable the checkmark in front of
Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)
- Click
OK
to confirm
Thank you for taking the time. Unfortunately none of these options worked (I did them 1 at a time and checking the game after each one). I am still getting the same error. There was a wow update this morning and that downloaded fine etc but WOW itself won’t connect
Ah, that’s a shame
I wonder if maybe wow left any more specific clues/errors behind in the Logfile.
In Battle.net client > Games tab > Make sure wow is selected on the left > Options button (under the wow logo) > Show in Explorer. Then traverse into the _retail_
→ Logs
subfolders.
There should be a bunch of log files there. Connection.log
seems like the most obvious candidate to maybe contain something useful (you can open these files in any text editor such as Notepad / Wordpad / Word).
OO another early bird like me thank you!

Generic error 1016 It’s something, but still doesn’t really narrow it down much.
Have a look on:
https://eu-looking-glass.battle.net/
After you select Europe / World of Warcraft / Darkmoon Faire
there, let it run all 3 tests, and then copy/paste the results here (using the Preformatted Text
button on forum here).
Perhaps that might shed some more light on things.
Also, do you run any kind of security suite software ? (think virus- or malware scanners, firewalls, …). Generally speaking, if you do, it’ll show up with some branded icon in the system tray (bottom right of the screen, next to the clock).
Common names are Norton, McAfee, AVG, Avira, MalwareBytes, ESET, Avast. Trend Micro, Kaspersky, BitDefender, but there are many others.
Windows itself also has Defender (anti virus/malware) and a Firewall build-in, but the stock one isn’t too likely to be interfering i suspect.
If you find any such a security tool running, see if it can be (temporarily) disabled. Most firewall software has an option where you can rightclick the systemtray icon and select something like “disable for 15 minutes / 1 hour / …”.
Obviously this is mostly to narrow down what software (if any) is interfering.
If there’s no third party security stuff running, we could try the same thing with the build-in Windows Firewall.
-
WindowsKey + i
to open the the Settings app - Go to
Update & Security
- Select
Windows Security
in the left sidebar - Click
Firewall and Network protection
- It likely says the
Firewall is active
for all 3 possible Network profiles (Domain
,Private
andPublic
). - For each of the 3, click it and then flip the Firewall to
off
. - You’ll likely get a popups asking you to confirm you really wanna do that, you do.
- You may get reminders/hints on the bottom right of the screen, where windows nags you to re-enable the firewall, don’t click those until you’ve had a chance to try wow.
I keep getting Sorry, you can’t include links in your posts. using the Preformatted text or otherwise? also only using Windows defender - have tried turning all 3 off but no success
Used pastebin kZ6wJEaK
Also can play Skyrim hahah

Those are the MTR results above.
Honestly, i’m not too certain what to make of them. There’s obvious indicators of problematic things in there, but they do not seem consistent between the different tests.
Hopefully a Blizzard CS rep can make more sense of it. Or someone else with more of a networking background.
Thank you for your help!
FYI I can play on my trusty old laptop so it is clearly something in my pc settings though no idea what could have changed. I will try to compare settings and see if anything is obviously different but if anyone else has any ideas it would be appreciated.
