What is really an Alt? I know it´s shorthand for alternative or alternate but never could figure out why people don´t say char or character. Are you supposed to feel bound to your MAIN. All the burden of knowing it is your MAIN that you can only play lol. I know I´m silly but I figured I´d get this out there.
Honestly, I just use alt as a way of saying “character I don’t play as much”. When I hear the word alt, I think of a character that isn’t as progressed as a main.

People can play on their alts. That’s why they have them. The main just tends to be the character that they play more than the rest. Mains don’t have to stay as the same character, either, and can be changed around so there’s no real tie.
think Blizz said themselves that they’d prefer people to stick to a main and the game certainly encourages that in too many ways, but tbh, with me they’d be shooting themselves in the foot, if it wasn’t for my army of alts i would have left a looong time ago…but yes, i don’t have a ‘main’ or alts, they are all just chars…
An ‘alt’ is simply a character you’re referring to that isn’t the one you’re either posting with or playing on at that particular time. That, or the reason a certain character is behind on certain things, such as neck. Nothing more, nothing less.
Nobody has a main anymore. It’s a myth. All you have now is mains. Mains everywhere.
I have one main I do everything on, then I have alts (currently 48 alts) which I don’t gear, don’t raid on (or very rarely), hardly every log other than levelling them to the new cap. Some of them do professions so I don’t need to use the AH and other than that I will use some of them to mass farm plate mogs, mounts, pets, toys etc.
Alts are just mount bonus rolls for me.
It is a sort of vanilla thing, each person had a main, to which you had to invest hundreds of hours to git gud, level professions and gear up.
With LFR and later the concept of main is a joke, as even most mythic raiders have 2-3 chars they have geared up to participate depending on demand.
All these years, I still feel like my old undead warrior is still my main character even thou I lost the account, hell some friends even refer to me ingame with that warrior’s name.
A main is basically your favourite character and the character you play and invest time in the most, usually what you feel it fits you the most when you play the game.
As for alts it’s basically alternate characters for when you are bored, or alternate progression, it’s like a side kick that you use for other purposes, gold farming, exploring new classes, trying a different role etc.
Your main is basically the one you will usually spend most of your time on or do things on first, the one you enjoy playing the most or maybe even your first made character. Usually it has more meaning in raids.
