Im a new 120 that hasn’t played WoW in full (raiding), I would just level characters from time to time over the years. I really want to get in to this prior to Shadowlands.
I’ve just hit 120, ilvl 318 from quests etc, but im now struggling in the War Campaign when I’ve gone with Magni to Halls of Origination, the mobs are too strong.
Do I need to grind some side quests/world quests to get better gear prior to completing campaign?
Do a few days of nazjatar. Will get you several 385 pieces of gear from the vendor to fill out your behind slots.
Other than that, world quests, assalts, warfronts and even heroic dungeons can get you a few upgradea
Killing some world bosses (buy an extra roll token if you can).
If there’s a warfront up; do that (and the quest for it).
Maybe grab some gear off the AH.
Nazjatar for pearls and chance for gear tokens (also has a world boss).
WQs, invasions etc… anything to get your ilvl up a bit so the WQ and Emissary rewards become a nice ilvl. Once you have those; do the legendary cloak/vision unlock questline. Once you can do the N’Zoth invasions in the Vale and Uldum (they also have a worldboss btw), your ilvl should get a nice boost.
It’s much easier for alts to get quick gear through the armor tokens that drop.
If you do not have pearls from the first couple of quests leading into Nazjatar then continue down that questline. For 5 pearls you can buy 385 armor pieces that can boost your itemlevel.
They are called Benthics, and you can buy them from Artisan Itanu in the Nazjatar Alliance camp, same building where you turn in your Ankoan emissary chests.
WQ emissaries in Zandalar/Kul Tiras will reward you with 400+ilvl gear, I think the base is 445. Do some of those, some heroics and you’ll get kitted to do the 8.2 and 8.3 content pretty quick.
You should have no problem getting your legendary cape on a fresh 120.
I have done it multiple times starting with very outdated gear, the npcs carry you and you get enough gear to suffice by the last quest.
Let the npcs do the tanking, meaning drop your dps down if you must, I’m guessing you are in the scenario with the tentacle at the end.
Should be completely possible without grinding, if you really want there are a few options;
nazjatar 385 items, you can get quickly
auction house many 360-400 boes for 1-3k a pop
also join raid to kill rare elites and vul’kaz in uldum gives you 445 gear if lucky
take a friend, party sync, they can join and help you out
