Will we ever get new ones or are we just going to play the same ones we’ve had for years now?
Also, post some new BG themes/ideas. I’d love to see a new epic and normal BG, on the same map (the normal BG would be smaller than the epic one, just a portion of the epic BG map) that’s just a basic team deathmatch. The most kills wins! Or alternatively limited number of respawns/lives like in AV etc but no flags or bases other than a basic spawning place.
Yeah, I was wondering that myself; but appereantly there is a truce between Alliance & Horde forces so a new battleground concept is a unlogical one (or maybe because of laziness) there are lots of areas in dragon isles that can be a battleground area like Ohn’ahran Plains and Azure Span . There can even be a MOBA style battleground which you can assist warring centaur tribes(npc’s/minions) trying to invade the other clans base from 3 different entry points (corridors) which they have their own guard posts/towers , since maybe there is a truce between alliance and horde , the players may choose(or assigned automaticly) to be an ally of a centaur clan and invade the other one. This way we can also have our first cross faction battleground.
I think Blizzard’s reluctance stems from queue times. The more battlegrounds there are in the mix, the harder it is to fill them all up.
Plus, the Battleground crowd have shown that the existing maps have an incredible amount of replay value and are still fun. So there’s little urgency for Blizzard to make more.
Personally though, I’d love a tug-of-war map. A big 40 vs 40 Battleground with a moving objective in the middle. And then the objective moves in your direction if your team has the most people around it, and the enemy’s direction if they have the most people around it.
Lots of PvP games have this type of gameplay, and it can be super fun.
But I don’t think new Battlegrounds are high on Blizzard’s list of priorities. Hasn’t been for years.
I’m pretty sure that’s not how it goes with filling BGs.
The system checks every (x, whatever) 10 sec how many people are in the queue pool for a small or big BG, or both, then waits depending on how much that pool grows and how fast. If the growth rate sleeps, the system goes “okay this pool is ready for a small BG” and spins the wheel, and rng decides which small BG that pool gets dumped into.
It probably also counts played history, seeing who in that pool has played what BG last, and how many times, so it can favor the maps which on average in that pool have been played the least, to avoid repetition.
So the only thing new BG maps result in, would be making it slightly less likely for players to play a map which they already played previously, according to their map history log. In other words simply more map variety. Queue times would be 100% unaffected.
This, it’s easy to give it some timewalking / war games context.
Anyway, I think it might make sense to have basically alternate maps for existing concepts, like how Arathi Basin, Battle for Gilneas and New Deepwind Gorge (which actually is kind of a new BG they added in Shadowlands) have the same objectives, but the map is different enough that it feels different.
But personally I’d love to see a BG with more verticality, like towers or a mountainside.
The problem lies with the fact that you can also queue for specific Battlegrounds. So if one guy queues for Warsong Gulch and another guy queues for Arathi Basin, then the queue system has to find people to fill those Battlegrounds up.
And of course the more Battlegrounds you have, the more “orders” does the queue system have to deal with at the same time.
That was sort of the problem with Strand of the Ancients. It was wildly unpopular, but if one person queued up for that Battleground specifically (preference, achievements, whatever), then the queue system still had to find another 29 people for it, because you can’t leave that guy hanging forever.
Whichever Battlegrounds you end up with if you queue for Random is dictated by those players who queue for specific ones. The queue system basically grabs people from the Random pool to stuff into the Specific pool. And it can do that quicker and more effectively if there are fewer specific Battlegrounds to choose from.
That’s the reasoning anyway (Blizzard have given it in the past themselves). I don’t buy it entirely myself and think it’s a weak excuse for not adding content where it may not be direly needed but still greatly appreciated.
They could simply fix it by letting random BG players check BGs which they want to exclude from the map pool. I know achievements is a thing, but not worth ruining the main BG flow for the majority. They should allow players to do a solo BG queue vs island expedition bots, to farm whatever achieves they want in a pseudo solo mode. No honor gained. Unless it’s related to a achievement.
99% should queue in one main pool for random small or big, with some maps to “dislike” which the pool system then pushed to the bottom, a quick vote check so to speak, among players in that queue.
you already can pick what bg you want to queue for, you just dont get your box with goodies from a win.
But yes we need alot more different bgs And i’d say epic bgs especially need reworks and more variety. AV shouldnt be about racing, wg needs balancing, ashran needs the return of of its events. Ioc seems to be fine tho.
Bgs do vary on the class balancing, but after so many years i would have some variety besides wsg and ab and kotmogu.
We used to be able to blacklist Battlegrounds. We can’t do that anymore, because again, Blizzard’s reasoning is that it lowers the efficiency of the queue system. All Horde blacklisted Alterac Valley and Alliance queued specifically for Alterac Valley. Result? Infinite Alliance queue times.
And it’s not because I’m arguing against you here. There are a lot of things Blizzard can do and ought to do.
But they’re not.
Blizzard aren’t making new Battlegrounds, in part because there are concerns with the queue system. But if they were addressing those queue concerns, then they could make Battlegrounds!
But they’re not.
So it sort of ends there.
This whole: “They could simply…” falls flat when Blizzard haven’t done anything for several years.
King - 50% damage reduction, which is increased by 10% each time the King dies. Queen - 15% damage increase. Rook - 50% speed increase and puts a 15-second debuff that reduces healing on the target, damage done by the Rook refreshes the debuff. Knight - Each killing blow increases the Knight’s and the Queen’s damage by 5%, stacking up to 10 times, reset upon death. Bishop - 15% healing increase.
Pawns - the players that didn’t get one of the 5 buffs, upon death, respawn instantly at the graveyard.
At the start of the BG, players have 3 minutes to decide who gets what buff, stand in the circle of the buff you want, and everyone not in that circle gets to vote if you get it.
The objective of the game is, Kill their King 3 times or have a Pawn steal his crown, and bring it back to your base, making the pawn the new King.
Having played SWTOR, there are several BGs from there that could be adapted and we don’ t have yet.
Horde and Alliance airships hover above battleground. Below are 3 catapults located middle, left and right - the 3 zones are separated by walls but with tunnels/entry points. You land from the airship and have a choice of going right left or mid.
You cap a catapult and it begins firing at the opposing ship. So if your side controls 2, twice as many bolts are fired at the opposing ship. After enough hits, the losing side’s ship crashes and you win.
Titanball. There is a complex but small map and each team starts the opposite side. There are lots of traps and stuns - intermittently flaming fire pits, lightning stun areas, slowing acid areas, and it’s very 3D - ledges etc. In the middle is a ball. First side to grab it has to get it across the enemy goal line. If you hold on to it for too long it explodes killing you so you have to pass it. Best of 5 goals wins or timer.
This one is kinda like strand of the ancients but better, no vehicles canons or door health. One side attacks and one defends, You all have a plant bomb ability enabled, and choose to split left or right to plant a bomb on doors. The bomb needs 7 seconds to plant and can be deactivated by defenders in 3 seconds. When defenders are killed their re spawn time increases slightly so over time the bomb success is more likely.
Blowing a door resets the defender respawn point to fall back to the next section. There are bridges you can be knocked off leading to 2 further left/right doors. Once these are blown there’s a final section, 2 more doors then at the end a tunnel to the final treasure which you click on to win. Then swap sides - fastest team to the treasure wins the map. It’s a great map for stealthers.
