New Gsync monitor - black screens every few seconds

Hi all,

I recently purchased a new gsync monitor that runs 144hz, 1920x1080.

I have tried using gsync, and there will be moments where I can game perfectly with it: no black screens, feels very smooth. It always works in other games, too.

However, when I go back on/intermittently, there will be black screens every 2-4 seconds unless I turn GSYNC off - which defeats the whole point of having bought it in the first place. I thought this was because I was also running VSYNC, so I turned that off in NCP, too - but the issues still persist.

The only semi ‘fix’ I have found is to turn off GSYNC, and then turn it back on again, but the problems will only resume later on randomly.

What can I do to rectify this as it is incredibly frustrating after having bought the monitor just so I can make the most of WOW.

I have set ingame fps capped to 141 (few frames below), resolution is 1920x1080, 144hz, Gsync is set to enabled for fullscreen windows. I have checked to see that all drivers are updated, and they are. Note: I’m trying to experiment with Custom Resolution Unity.

Any help hugely appreciated.

What cable your using?
Are the connections loose?
How heavy are the end connectors on said cable?
Have you tried using a different port on graphics card?

Standard DP cable, pretty powerful one.
Connections are fine.

I’ve narrowed the issue down to this: GSYNC will turn off sometimes when monitor goes to sleep.

am i right to assume nvidia control panel is telling you that it isn’t validated for gsync? it can be a little finicky sometimes if you’re unlucky. i had similar black screen problems on one of my monitors when attempting to modify the gsync range (from 35-90 to 53-144), which worked perfectly fine with amd freesync.

things you could attempt:

  1. try reinstalling drivers cleanly with DDU, try both the latest and an older driver
  2. try reducing the gsync range with CRU
  3. try researching if other people have also encountered issues with your particular monitor, and if they managed to fix it

if you can’t get it to work, i’d return the monitor.

Okay, quick way to sort this then.

  1. Start, type Control panel (Opens up better control panel than Windows 10 settings)

  2. Go and find Power Options.

  3. Click on Change Plan Settings

  4. Put Turn off Monitor and select ‘Never’

  5. Click Save Settings, done.

That should stop your monitor from turning off and fix the G-Sync issues.

There’s other settings in power options such as making sure PCIE doesn’t turn off, same for WiFi and USB as sometimes those can go into suspend mode if you don’t use them that much. But the above will fix the loss of connection with GPU to Monitor.

Thanks, lads!

What does that even mean? Standard and powerful in one sentence… does not fit
I bought Lindy DP cables just to be sure, cheaper ones can often cause issues with higher res/high refreshrates.

Haha i realise the paradox now! They’re powerful cables =P

Essentially, the monitor now works. Thanks guys.

The only other point I have is the following: should I use VSYNC, as well as ingame FPS limiter, when GSYNC is active? I have set the game fps to 141 fps max (few frames below 144hz), and I also use NCP VSYNC in conjunction with TB - is this good? I have heard conflicting reports in regard to VSYNC on vs VSYNC off when using GSYNC.

No Vsync, just enable gsync globally and limit the FPS in WoW to 141.
Always Vsync off with gsync… vsync is basically the opposite of gsync
