When it comes to these things I know you guys are the most help. Basically, I’m looking to build a gaming PC pretty much excusively for WoW (a few other games might make the cut too), I’m just wondering…
What is the cheapest way I can build a computer that will run WoW on Ultra settings? (I wouldn’t need any more than 60 fps)
Ryzen 3 3300X with a very good 16GB RAM kit, good B450 motherboard, second hand RTX 2070 or up which are now sold for fraction of the value due to Ampere rush, 512GB+ SSD, even SATA will do, ultrawide display (really good for WoW).
If the price is low and you can asses some credibility of the seller then I don’t see why not. Those are relatively new cards, some even under normal warranty. Right now RTX 2070 used is prices nearly same as RTX 2060 used. Short lived event when people go crazy.
why not? graphics cards are one of the least risky things to buy used. you basically can’t ruin them with normal use. you can’t really overvolt them, you have no access to the fragile parts of the card without removing the cooler. realistically they just die from wear and tear.
picking up a used card from someone buying ampere can be a pretty great deal, especially if you aren’t in the price range of the 3070 anyway.
Well i had 2 Nvidia GPUs die after 2 years of use. New ones from major brands like Gigabyte.
So i don’t really wanna risk a used one… which might only last another year if unlucky
CPUs are way more resilient it seems, my old I5-3570K has been overclocked (400Mhz) since day one and still running strong.
ah, that’s unlucky. there’s definitely value to a warranty, but you are paying a premium by buying new. i sell everything i replace, and i’ve had a decent chunk of used components throughout the years. think the oldest one i’m still using is my pump, bought it used 6 years ago. not sure how old it is.
i’m wary of used mice, keyboards and headphones. that’s a little gross. motherboards are risky, particularly intel ones. other than that, show me a good graphics card or ram sale and i’ll pick that up. might buy a 2080 ti if someone’s selling one with a waterblock for a good price. adds so much when you buy a new card and need a block.
cpus do not die, yeah. unless you physically damage them or abuse them with aggressive overclocking. my 6700k’s memory controller degraded significantly after running ram voltage at 1.41v for a few months, so i’m wary of increasing voltage beyond 1.35v now. i’ve never had the core degrade though, but i’ve only used intel cpus. 920, 4770k, 6700k and now 9900k, all been ran pretty high. apparently ryzen cpus can degrade pretty fast if you use too much core voltage.
