New player - Cannot finish quests that send me to dungeons

Hello,

After hearing about this game for many years and a friend recommending it, I’ve decided to give it a try and make a free trial account.

It started out ok, I made a wolf druid, finished the tutorial island and some quests that sent me to Kul Tiras. Pretty standard MMO questing stuff so far (I’ve also played Final Fantasy XIV before, which has a similar questing system).

I then decided to explore the world some more and went to a place called Draenor where I built a garrison and did a few quests, and then I went to a place called Broken Isles, which is awesome - got introduced to a Druid order hall and also got 4 different awesome looking artifact weapons. So I decided to continue the story in this Broken Isle area.

But here is the problem - I now have 4 druid quests in my quest log that ask me to retrieve items from 4 different dungeons. However, in the dungeon finder I only have 2 dungeons available from Battle for Azeroth and am completely unable to queue for anything else, even though my level 20 is sufficient to enter those dungeons.

Since, I am unable to complete this content without a group and since on free trial I cannot chat or create parties with other people - how am I supposed to complete these quests?

I wrote a ticket in-game to support and told me that something called Chromie time or whatever which would allow queuing for other dungeons than those 2 available is not available to free trial accounts.

This is super confusing - in my previous experiences with other MMO free trials (like Final Fantasy XIV and Guild Wars 2) I’ve never encountered situations where you cannot access content that you are eligible for based on your character level.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Zenn

Hi Zenn, and welcome to Azeroth!

Yes, it’s confusing, and no, I don’t have any satisfactory suggestions for your Worgen.

This whole “chose your expansion” and the complete obliteration of levels thing has been in force only for the last week, and everyone is confused. I keep an eye on things that beginners ask, and I’m confused too.

Until last week, you would have been barred from Legion content (Broken Isles) based on your level - only level 98+ characters could go there. This week, anyone from 10 onwards can go there - if they are not a “New Player”.

Blizzard’s stated position is that “New Players” - and I don’t have an exact definition of that - have to complete Exile’s Reach, and then go to BfA (Kul Tiras) before they can do any of the other expansions.

The reason you have only BfA dungeons in your Finder is that, as a New Player by this standard, you are locked to BfA until you hit level 50, and cannot divert to the other expansions’ track, so you don’t see Legion (Broken Isles) dungeons. (Incidentally, I’m actually surprised the game let you go to Broken Isles and quest there. I thought that was also barred to New Players.)

You could move to Chromie Time, which allows you to choose your expansion, and change to Legion expansion to see the dungeons there, but, AFAIK, you are not allowed to use Chromie Time as a New Player. This has nothing to do with your not having paid yet - has to do with your New-Player-ness.

You can find Chromie under a tree in front of the Stormwind Embassy in Stormwind.

She could let you select Legion, and she would allow one of my characters level 10+ to do so, but I believe she won’t for you, since you are a New Player who has not completed BfA.

I think this New Player restriction needs some thought, and needs to be changed, but I can only wait and see what Blizzard decides.

While you’re looking around, you might try making another character, and see whether the game allows you to start in the real startng zone for that race, which will not be Exile’s Reach. I recommend Undead and Pandaren for an interesting characterisation and story, Night Elf, Tauren and Human for a lovely zone … and Goblins for the zaniest start in WoW. :stuck_out_tongue: I’m not sure if you can make Demon Hunter or Death Knight classes, but those classes also have their own dedicated starting zones regardless of race.

Whan that character gets to 10, you could try Chromie again. I do not think she will open Legion to you, but even if she doesn’t, seeing more of the starting zones is well worth doing anyhow!

Thank you very much for your response, Grainne!

At least I know I am not alone in feeling so confused about this whole thing.
I really appreciate your advice - though I am afraid the Chromie thing does not work for me at all.
I will probably check out some of those starting zones you mentioned, but honestly, from what I’ve seen so far, I’m not getting a really good feeling about buying the game.

For one, the developers clearly don’t want new players to check out group content, which I believe MMOs should be really about - I mean other than those 2 very confusing dungeons (even though the pirate themed one was kinda wacky/fun), I am unable to access anything group-related at this point (outside of PvP of course, which I tried once, but am not really interested in at all). For me, this is kind of a red flag, and it’s giving me the feeling that the developers don’t have faith in their MMO/group content.

Not sure how I could make a purchase decision without getting a feel of how the end-game/group content might play.

While I love the artstyle and music especially so far, the solo game is not really that solid, mainly consisting of standard MMO quests and a lot of weird mobile game like activities, such as sending NPCs to do “missions”. Although I must admit, there were a few cool cinematics, with some pretty good voice acting. I can’t really say much about the story yet, since I’ve only experienced a bit so far.

Finally, for the only group content I managed to get exposed to (the only 2 dungeons that I can queue for), I found it really wierd that there was no social interaction, even though I tried to initiate conversations or ask about certain mechanics, etc.

In any case, I will try out a bit more of this solo game, but honestly I was hoping to get a better idea of what the MMO part of this game was through the free trial.

Regardless, sorry for the rant/unsolicited feedback.
Thank you again for trying to help!

Best of luck, have fun and stay safe!

Zenn

Honestly, if you tried to ask questions, there was a chance you would have been kicked. I’m glad you were spared that.

Dungeons in WoW are simply rush-rush. A comment on the forums I read once sums it up for me. A player complained of getting kicked from a dungeon group, and admitted trying to chat during the run, and one of the responses was “Quite right! I’d kick someone who was wasting my time talking when he should have been doing his job.” This is not universal, but I would say that is the prevailing attitude. And it’s the attitude the devs encourage.

You will see less of that attitude in WoW Classic, but some of it has percolated back in time to that as well.

I’ve met a few new players to WoW who come from FF, and every time they are shocked by how dungeon runs go in WoW.

Don’t mistake me: end-game dungeon and raid content in WoW is said to be superior to FF by people who play both, but the social fabric is completely different. If you want social fabric in WoW, you need to find it in a guild or community, not in random groups. And when it comes to max-level dungeons, the devs actually put timers to discourage people from taking their time interacting.

Wow, thanks for explaining!

I had no idea the community was so different from other MMOs.
It does really look to me that this game is not very new-player friendly and with this discouragement of social interactions, it really doesn’t sound like my type of game at all.

Regardless, I hope everyone else playing this is having a good time.
It’s probably back to Final Fantasy for me.

Thank you for all the help, once again!

Best of luck,
Zenn
