New player: I'm missing a common thread

Hello everyone,
I am a new player and started playing on a PvE server a few weeks ago. I am currently level 30 and I really like WoW. I especially like the Kul Tiras area and enjoy the quest dialog and cutscenes.

Unfortunately, I often miss a common thread. Even when I receive quests for dungeons that I don’t know are dungeons … like in Tol Dagor.

The tutorial was really great, but then you arrive in Stormwind and experience one confusion after another. First you talk to the king about Jaina and then you hear sailors at the dock talking about when or if he’ll ever come back.
You then have three campaigns and have to find out on the internet which one you should do first so that you don’t spoil yourself. Unfortunately, this always spoils the fun of the game for me.
Apart from that, I really like WoW and enjoy the time and the RPG elements.

Is there perhaps any help I’m overlooking so I can do the campaigns and quests chronologically correctly?

Hi, and welcome to Azeroth!

I’m glad you’re enjoying it here!

Yeah, that’s a problem. Starting some of the expansions can get confusing.

Stormwind is the Alliance starting hub for everything, and the game has a system called “phasing” that can change an area depending on which timeline (mostly expansion) you are in. So Stormwind gets overloaded.

In Kul Toras, you have three zones to do. You can in fact do any of them, in any order. In fact, once you have started one zone and got into it a bit, you can go back to Boralus and start another.

Generally speaking, if you have to do things in a certain order, they game won’t give you a choice; you will have to take the one selected. If you are given a choice, just take whichever one you like.

As for looking things up on Wowhead, I understand. I was further into the game than you when I first looked up a quest on Wowhead. I really resisted it because I felt it was cheating. But WoW is so HUGE - you really have no idea yet - that we all need to look things up.

Just keep following the quests, especially the campaign quests with the brown shields around the exclamation marks, and it will all work out.

If you have any specific questions, you can also ask them here anytime!

Hello Gráinne,

thank you for your answer.

Yes, that’s right. WoW is really big and I’ve gotten lost a few times or didn’t know what to do. But that’s never bothered me because I see it as an adventure and enjoy discovering things.

I think it’s a bit of a shame that after the really good tutorial you’re thrown in at the deep end. I don’t want to talk WoW down, but I know that from other RPGs a bit differently, or more player-friendly.

Thanks for the tip about WoWHead. I’m not sure if I read it on the site anymore what I need to do, but I will use that site in the future.

I’ll keep doing the quests then and ask again if necessary.

Thank you very much.

This is a matter of taste.

I, and most people, started before that turorial was added. I hate it. In the original and earlier game, you were just thrown into a huge world, and everything was an adventure. You could go into a higher zone and get swatted like a fly by the first mob you see. You could get lost. You might have to swim for half an hour to get where you were going.

The Tutorial gives you no sense of where your race came from, its history, or its place in the world. You got your start on Cardboard Island instead of starting with your people on the idyllic Wandering Isle and coming to understand why you left, and how some of you chose Alliance and some chose Horde.

When you make your next character, please do not choose Exile’s Reach to start. Choose your race’s native home.

Yes, Wowhead is the most reliable source for all the quests and items you might come across. Main Wowhead Pro Tip: Always Read The Comments! The comments are from the people who came there with the same problem you have! :stuck_out_tongue:

I will also drop this YouTube here. It is a bit out of date, in that it doesn’t cover Chromie Time or Skyriding, but it is a HUGE video that covers the whole game, including things you didn’t need you needed to know.

It is broken up into chapters of a minute or two, so you can skip specifically to the exact thing you want to know about. But, when you have time, it is good to watch all of it.

I also see this more recent video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnzdeoSMkvM

that aims to do the same thing. I haven’t watched it to give a judgment, but it seems to cover much the same ground, maybe spending less time on the early basics and more on the more advanced stuff.

Here’s a rule: If it’s in WoW, there is a video of it on YouTube. If you search YouTube for the name of a quest, you will find videos of someone doing that quest.

Enjoy!

Many thanks for the tips. I will definitely do that and also watch the videos .

Have a great day!
