Disclaimer: This is essentially a post that I am copy/pasting from a different unrelated tread, that I felt needed some addressing on it’s own.
"Idk if many people know or remember that we got this feature introduced in WoW with SL that is called the “mentorship system”. Experienced players could opt into it and have access to a special chat that is dedicated only for new players. The idea was that new players could ask questions there and the veterans could provide support/answers. Truthfully I have not seen anyone type anything in there and often forget that I am even a part of that system, and I play on a high pop realm.
The reason I am bringing this up is because we could potentially have tagging system that marks new players and put’s them in special dungeon queues that would include 3-4 new players and 1-2 veterans to teach them how to do mechanics and such. We could also get some voting system on how helpful the veterans were that would rewards them and incentivize more players to opt into the system and be helpful."
As we briefly touched upon this subject someone else brought another interesting thing to my attention. New players don’t really know that they are part of the special chat that is provided for them.
EDIT I understand that this idea is not perfect, it is not immune to criticism and it could easily fall into the trap of incentivizing toxic players to join and troll the new players, however I am more interested on how to iterated on it further (because as it is now it will only affect dungeons) and worry about it’s moderation later. That is also not saying that ideas on how to moderate it are not welcome here.

soo FF14 then? tbh i like their systems but i can’t imagine it ever working with the wow community as it currently is ‘‘you didn’t give me points that last run so I’m going to try and ruin this run for you’’
No idea how it is in FF14, I only know that they marked new players and yes that is where this idea originated from.
Well we could make it anonymous and for the mentors to not know if players did or did not vote by doing it like a pay check, essentially you get your brownie points at the end of the week and not at the end of runs.
But yeah it is a fair criticism.
The mentoring system in ff14 is almost exactly like you described, it’s a good system, can even spend points to get some mounts there.

Great idea but it has to be very well protected against abuse e.g. player names should not be visible at all, or anonymized / obscured somehow.
The problem with this is that it requires Blizzard going out of their way to enable such an implementation which I doubt they will do. As I said in that other thread, they are terrible at onboarding in general.
Furthermore, I’d propose voting be a bit more nuanced than “helpful” or “not helpful”:
- Communicates clearly
- Pacing is good
- Teaches boss mechanics
- Explains why are mob groups skipped (guess that is filed under the 1st point, maybe)
- Teaches players how to use their CCs or CDs to make certain content easier / more enjoyable
- Explains why we do X or Y (example: opening of wings of dungeons; that was a thing long time ago, not sure how prominent it is nowadays)
And likely others. So basically a list with several scales of 1 to 5 stars could work well.

I answer questions every day in there, it is a hive of activity. I changed the colour so it stands out for me.
New players ARE marked in the game, they have a baby murloc over their heads. I see them out and about in the world all the time. I can’t remember what we get over ours.
I am against any point system, rewards or votes for mentors. It’s a system that just asks to be abused. At present people volunteer out of kindness. We do not want people to pile in there farming points. Or trying to out do each others answers.

Interesting, do you know if the chats are server based or shard based, because like I said I have had it on since it was added in the game and I have not seen a single person post anything there.
I see people from lots of servers in the same chat, we often have to explain that we can’t invite them to our guilds because they are somewhere completely different.
I play in WM off, I have no idea if that affects the people you see or not.

I did likely no less than 150 LFD levelling instances in the last 3 months, never even seen one.
Who gets to see those? Only the mentor players?
…Oh, is the icon only seen in the Newcomer Chat? Not on top of nameplates?
The newcomers have the murloc mark and ONLY guides can see them.

It only shows for them in newcomer chat, as far as I’m aware.
You can see it in my screenie.
No I mean I have only seen it over players heads.
It would be nice when we could just put that icon on our head and everyone could see it. I don’t feel like a newcomer anymore but i haven’t done most of the leveling dungeons at all. Also it would help for picking a different role/spec i have never played, so it instant shows i am learning.

It’s a cross realm chat. It’s only limited to your own faction and language I believe.
Probably the same icon we have in the newcomer chat.
Yeah it will be that!
Green flag that’s the one!
