New upcoming novel

Shadows Rising - no. It’s a book related to Shadowlands, and this expansion is trying (at least for now) to tell the story of the game in the game.

Before the Storm has some crucial parts of the story depicted outside of the game (Gathering, moving of Genn and Turalyon out of “anti-forsaken” into “anti Sylvanas” camp, details about Magni and activities in Silithus, the most of Calia Menethil story, leaving her a hollow husk in the game).

afaia it only happened once and rather recently (after the reception of BfA).

I would say they can’t. Which is not the same as “dramatic stories can’t be told in video games”. Especially when it comes to linear stories.

Did they set up any events? I don’t think so. Neither Sylvanas gathering, nor the Bwonsamdi-stuff did more than tease. And character stuff is inconsistent anyways. Before the Storm Genn and Turalyon are not the same characters like Shadows Rising Turalyon and Genn, for example. Which happens when different writers get their fingers on poorly defined characters, I guess.

Oh, I certainly wouldn’t go that far. But “dramatic stories can’t be told well within an MMO, if the player character isn’t the major protagonist that is personally acknowledged in the story” is something I’m at least thinking about.
