New wow mod announced: UNO... or maybe not

(( this is how it started ))

You heard it right, new hardcore mode coming with leaderboards!
Think megabonk but with a big twist:

Everyone and everything has only ONE hp!
(classic wow only)

It would be so interesting, entertaining and fun to watch how things play out…
What would be the meta? What zones, mobs will players farm, for how long, is there any point in doing dungeons etc?

Why would players play? I’m sure the mode alone would get players in for fun because it’s so crazy. I’d suggest blizz runs a prize competition every month, ending with the top 10 scoreboard players being rewarded like top 1-10 getting $1000-$100 prize money, based on most exp gained / in the shortest time.

Here’s how I would mod the game to push players into dungeons and raids to keep it from being just a pve farm:

  • each green item adds 2% movement speed, blue 4%, purple 6%
  • so with some 10greens 5blues 3epics you would gain ~60% movement speed.
  • there are no mounts, no professions
  • flight paths are instant teleports
  • no pvp flagging
  • mob lifebars view distance 50yd
  • hunter cheeta aspect and rogues sprint disabled
  • warriors and rogues start with a throwing knife (no need to buy)
  • casters start with wands
  • exp buff 100% in the world, 250% inside dungeons, 500% in raids.
  • after reaching 60, paragon levels kick in, exp counter continues
  • you gain pseudo levels above 60 that display you at 65, 75 etc, but your hitrates etc remain on a 60 baseline, just to show others how far you got

(( this is where I had to stop because the slope and split in design went too hard and it became a rubics cube sudoku puzzle to solve… ))

A pure 1hp version would have been totally dominated by hunters, fast bow + cheeta aspect. There would be no reason to pick any other class. That’s when I thought of giving everyone a universal ranged attack to keep it balanced: global 2.00 aps, bows, knives, wands, shamans and druids get shocks and moonfire. Hunters still dominate due to mechanics, and shamans + druids have mana costs, could be reduced to 1 removing the issue.

Then the game would be about a tagging war, who gets to target mobs the fastest and where, that’s not good. Add hyperspawns and mob density? Also bad, for red mobs bad rng = you’re dead. Make every player exist in their own instance solo? Server load issue? Swap layer when you group?

Now I started leaning towards actual megabonk autofire.
Just point camera in a direction and it autofires at mobs.
Then the itemisation feels almost moot. Now it seems intuitive to add torghast mechanics, autoloot power ups that drop from mob kills, so we have to drop the whole 1hp design.

It would work, but basically we would have to create a slower paced megabonk with wow assets, more instant abilities, no cast times, more leech, heals, shields, thorn dmg, block mechanics etc. A lot or work, but it would be pretty fun.

Someone take it for what it is and run with it. You hardly get sued if it’s a fan made minigame, if it turns out to be good, blizz could actually buy it from you and license it on bnet.

So you basically want to play the old Unreal/Quake Insta-gib mode, not World of Warcraft.

What you ask is not even remotely close to RPG…

First of all I never said what I suggested would count as a rpg, and actually labelled it as a minigame.

But do define ‘rpg’?

Diablo is a rpg, action-rpg. You stretch it to the left and slow it down, make everything bigger and you reach wow territory. You spread it to the right and speed things up, you get closer to megabonk.

Where exactly is the line? Actions per seconds, dmg, hit speed, movement, mobs/fight at once? You could take the actual megabonk game, slow it down and tweak it, to be literally classic wow, just looking like roblox.

The difference between a creative designers mind vs a ‘consoomer’ is baffling…

RPG implies you play a game where your decisions matter, and your character gets more powerful as you progress through the game.

The minigame above, does not fit that criteria.
