Newbie looking for patient people to play with

Hello,

I’m new to WoW, and am hoping to make some friends. I’m adult (30’s, just) in the UK. I just started playing this last week.

I’m still finding a lot of this confusing, but am getting there! And overall I am really enjoying the game so far.

Look forward to hearing anyone

I am so sorry to say, but you are very unlikely to succeed in finding such a group.

I cry a little inside every time I read a post like yours, a new player who just found the game and is enthusiastic. I met a really nice old man, age 70, through a post like this one. I made a character, logged in, and played with him for a while, but I don’t play that much myself, and it was away from my own realm. I did find him a genuinely friendly guild on that realm. When I checked back a couple of weeks later, he was gone, and nobody remembered him. I still feel very bad everytime I remember that.

The game makes it very hard for the kind of friendly groups you are looking for to form, and especially to stay active.

Stage 1, I suppose, is levelling. Even new players who devote a couple of hours a day will get to 60 in a couple of weeks, and therefore nearly everybody is already at 60. It’s possible that someone will have an alt who is still levelling, that could play with you, but the odds are small that they would want to,

Once you get to 60, your chances improve A LOT. This is where the vast majority of playing time is spent, and everyone is the same level, so doing the same things.

However, you now need to find a guild or community of people who like to do the same things you like, play at about the level you play, and play at the same times you do. This doesn’t just happen; you need to seek them out. And since you don’t yet know what things you will like, it is impossible to target such groups in advance.

However, you should still be looking around now to get an idea of the types of groups available, and how they operate.

If you are trying to be competitive in the game, in the top 1% or less of players, clearing Mythic Raids and high level dungeons and arenas, the game does everything possible to accommodate you, but at lower levels of play, it will be all up to you.

Start by clicking around here: https://www.wowprogress.com/ and look for guilds on your realm, and compare them with guilds on other realm. Doomhammer currently has the “New Players” label, which means it’s a realm Blizzard are trying to get more players onto. You might also look at realms that already have high populations, and - and this is VERY IMPORTANT - on which your faction, Alliance or Horde, has an OVERWHELMING MAJORITY.

You might also look at this thread, though it is not very actime

I remember how precious those first few levels are, but if you stay you will be staying for years, so do take into account that the vast majority of your time will be spent at 60, and the more people of your faction that are on your realm then, the better your experience and chances of grouping with like-minded people will be.

Thank you for this reply! This is all very useful information.

I am happy to keep grinding for now

The thing I am finding most confusing (Overwhelming?) is the MASSIVE amount of info out there, its hard to know what and where to read etc.

Thanks again, I really appreciate your reply.

I’m glad to hear it! There is a lot of very beautiful and engaging content as you level.

OK, so for information, yes, there is a VAST amount to learn, and see, in the game.

One of the biggest problems is that the game changes and adds more content from expansion to expansion. Every two years, Blizzard adds an “expansion” to the game. We are on the ninth expansion, Shadowlands, now. Each expansion adds a new continent, new raids, new dungeons. Each expansion raises the level people can rise to, and changes the gameplay, the spells and talents each class can have. There is a vast amount of information generated on the Internet every expansion, and those pages are not usually removed when the next expansion is released, so there is a lot of out-of-date information on the net as well.

Here is a video aimed at new players. It is two hours long, but broken into 38 short chapters, with timestamps, covering the main things you need to know, so you can easily find and watch the bit you are interested in.

Typically, it iwas released just before Shadowlands launched, and so is now out of date in respect of the order of expansions you level in, and the level numbers themselves, since Shadowlands changed that, but it is still accurate about everything else, so may be quite informative for you.

Websites you should bookmark:

wowhead.com - is your first stop for any information about quests, where to find things, items, maps, achievements, dungeons and raids.

icy-veins.com - keeps a basic instruction guide for your class and spec - how to play it and what stats are best. Since you get more abilities as you level, its instructions will list abilities you don’t have yet, but by the time you are 20 or so, you should be able to cobble something together from its instructions.

Wowpedia https://wowpedia.fandom.com/wiki/Wowpedia is an encyclopedia of all the characters and events and items in the game, approaching mostly from the story side than the game-playing side. If you want to learn about Genn Greymane or Jaina Proudmoore’s backstories, it’s the place to go.

If it’s in WoW, it’s on YouTube somewhere! Nobbel’s channel https://www.youtube.com/user/Nobbel87 contains videos telling the various stories (Lore) of Warcraft. Other channels specialise in various types of gameplay, different classes, PvE and PvP. Go to YT, type in the name of any quest you are on, and you will find videos of people completing it! Just be aware of the date of the video you are looking at, so as not to be confused by information that is relevant to older expansions rather than this one.

And especially, if you have any specific questions, PLEASE ask here! You WILL get an answer.

In addition to the great resources Gráinne has provided, also remember there is a newcomer channel in game where you can ask questions and other players will try to help you.

If you’re using discord we also have a channel where we have a ask for help channel for questions (not in game help however).
I am a mentor there and we help new players every day.

I’am also a new player out there! Thx for the info!
Really enjoy the world, started with a Tauren Warrior. There is much to explore, but now seeing you guys posting it will help me guide through all the info there is.

Another thing I should say, that beginners should know:

You really don’t HAVE to know anything!

Your first time levelling a character, all you have to do is follow the quests. Go where they are. Go where they send you.

You certainly can learn things that make your levelling more efficient, but you don’t need them. There is nothing you can do that will permanently damage your character. There is nothing you can do that will prevent you levelling further. There is nothing you can skip or abandon that you can’t go back to - but it’s unlikely you will ever need to.

So explore and enjoy! There will be plenty of time to learn more once you get into Shadowlands after level 50.
