Night Elf new customization in shadowlands

Leaves in hair, finally after years of waiting, there we go!

The new Nelf customization options seriously have me considering rolling Alliance for the first time in 13 years.

The 5th Element hair seem a little off for Nelfes? But I’m am happy Night Elven fans are pleased so far.
Those customizations are giving a lot more of a WC3 vibe and that’s a good thing. Especially the leafs were missed and are great.

Sure but they still don’t have those regal Highborne Azshara vibes. Which is a shame if they’re won’t get them because she’s literally the most known and iconic character in the Night Elf lore

yes please we really need more players !

Bich please ! Tyrande and Illidan are the most iconic.

Good. Because they are explicit not that.

Illidan yes he is actually iconic. Tyrande though she might have been, but she’s only a blinded fool after vengeance which will only get her killed. It seems like in Shadowlands she will either die or disappear. Azshara is known by everyone and she’s an icon. She became more iconic and liked than Tyrande in the last couple of years.

You do realize the Highborne have been part of the night elf society since Cata. And in the last expacs we’ve seen more and more Highborne or night elves mages.

Edit: not to mention how the Highborne who joined the night elves have their own leader/representative.

Sadly yes. No they are not the same.

The Highborne who joined the night elves are actually THE ancient Highborne who were Queen Azshara’s most revered arcanists. They are the same.

Those were the ones turned in to Naga.

Not all Highborne lived in Zin-Azshari despite their obsession with the Well of Eternity. When the Great Sundering later decimated the world, the Shen’dralar - Queen Azshara’s most revered arcanists - were in Eldre’Thalas.

Plenty of info here:

But in short:

  • -10,000: The Sundering. The Shen’dralar remain isolated and secluded in Eldre’Thalas. Since they are becoming lethargic, they summon the demon Immol’thar and start siphoning its power. [World of Warcraft: Chronicle Volume 1, pg. 133]
  • -1,200: The Slaughter. Prince Tortheldrin and his followers kill most of their Shen’dralar elven kin in order to hoard the fading demon’s power for themselves. Most of the city is abandoned, and other creatures start moving in. [World of Warcraft: Chronicle Volume 1, pg. 139]
  • 25: Dire Maul. The ruins of Eldre’Thalas are raided and the Shen’dralar discovered feeding on Immol’thar. The majority of elves, including the prince, is killed by the Horde, while the demon is banished into the Twisting Nether. The surviving Shen’dralar flee the ruined city and wander in the woods trying to wean themselves off demonic power addiction. [World of Warcraft: Chronicle Volume 3, pg. 120]
  • 27: Deliberation. Mordent Evenshade leads the Shen’dralar refugees to attempt to negotiate and make amends with the Night Elves.
  • 28: The Cataclysm. The Shen’dralar sorcerers from Dire Maul are accepted and settle in Darnassus.

And here as well - 2009 ‘news’ as you can see.

Hi Leerena. Indeed they were!

And if you do not know it yet, you might like this:

No they were not. The Highborne who rejoined the night elves were from Eldre’Thalas not Zin-Azshari. Those mages were never turned into Naga. They actually shielded themselves and their city with a magical barrier (like the Nightborne) when the sundering happened. No Highborne from Eldre’Thalas (Dire Mal) were ever turned into Naga. The only Highborne who were turned into naga were the ones in Zin-AzsharI.

I never said they were from Zin-Azshari. You claimed they were her most rewired followers
but those follow her to this day.
I’m all for customization, but the mage thing did really hurt the Night Elven indentity overall.

I know, it’s pretty weird story wise, but that’s beside the point. It is what it is.

I saw them, I really wish Blizzard would add those options. Sadly I doubt they will :frowning: I have like 4 Highborne mages (1 lore wise is actually a Naga) but Im so limited with their options. Night elves really need those true regal ancient Highborne Azshara options!

Well I did say they WERE. I didn’t say they are. And not really. I think accepting the Highborne back made a lot of sense. Night elves are usually the peaceful elves but they are more arrogant than the Highborne who were always considered vain and prideful. So I’m happy night elves got over their arrogant asses (even though they still are arrogant towards other elves)

I see what you mean, after looking at the link from Astranea. I would see them fit more as a sub faction / demonyms, because they are so extremely different. But that’s also not a thing (yet).
Overall I am for more customization.

Oh my god oh my god oh my god
I’m so excited! This alone is enough for me to roll a hipster leafy nelf drood that I always dreamed to be

As cultures evolve in real life, so do fictional ones in a developing saga - and those who want to play retail need to acknowledge that it’s Blizzard’s story to write and tell, even if some times we might not like how it goes.

The ancient Night Elves used to be masters of the Arcane
but their leaders were arrogant and greedy, the consequences were devastating, and as a result the survivors rightfully chose to reject magic as a trade for 10k years.

Yet
just think of it: since the Night Elves were shaped by the magical energies of the Well of Eternity, in Classic it was (is, lol) possible to customize an Arcane Priest DPS build based on the Starshard racial skill, and even in retail, a number of Balance Druid spells (Starfall, Celestial Alignment, Starsurge, Lunar Strike) use Arcane magic. Despite of the 10k years ban of mage-ing, the Night Elves could never outright ban the usage of ALL the spells from the school of Arcane magic, because it belongs to their very essence, and as such was (is) part of the worships of both Elune and Nature - priesthood and druidism, which have long been their most iconic classes thanks to Tyrande and Malfurion.

So maybe
 just maybe
in the future the Night Elves could be meant to find some sort of equilibrium between these two aspects of themselves? The Balance spec proves that Nature and the Arcane do not necessarily have to conflict with each other. Blizzard may think otherwise of course
but I have a feeling that unless the Night Elves finally ‘make peace’ with their own magical origins, and learn to master magic as a simple aspect of Nature without falling into temptation to abuse it, their culture won’t ever be able to flourish again.

Being dominated by greedy arrogant elitists was not good
but neither is being led by vengeful feral savages, is it?

In my opinion Balance should be their key, as it can be both druidic, and arcane.
