Night fae vs Venthyr covenant. Which one is better for me?

So I am about to hit level60 on my third character and because I don’t have much free time, it will possibly my last maxed one. This makes me wonder about the last covenant to choose. On my first two maxed toons, I chose Necrolords and Bastion. This means my last choice is limited between Night fae and Venthyr.

First and foremost, I want to point out that I don’t care about skills. I’ll choose a covenant based on the best story and best RP setting. I am leveling a paladin.

So… which story is written better? I am mostly interested in the main characters. Which one gets more screen time? Tyrande (Night Fae) or Kael’Thas (Venthyr)? Does Garrosh appear, or not yet?

Another important question - does the campaign overlap? I hear that Venthyr and Necrolord overlap a lot and that would be a turnoff to choose Venthyr.

Then, last but not least. Judging by the threads that appear here, the Night fae campaign includes some controversial characters. Being conservative in all aspects of life, I am interested if there characters are minor or major (whether we spend a lot of time around them or not). If they’re major and eat a large part of the story, it will be a turnoff to choose Night fae.

Okay… I am level 57 and have some time to think, meanwhile I’ll read your suggestions here.

Having done both stories, from a lore perspective night fae is much more interesting. It involves already established characters and gives us new information about the loa. If you like Bwonsamdi, he is very much present in the story as well. If you don’t like Tyrande, then this could be a negative though since the story seems to also revolve around her storyline and the Night Warrior. Also, you seem to be talking about the gay deer/horse couple or whatever, and I have not seen them yet for more than one part of the story, though they could be involved in the future as well.

The venthyr storyline on the other hand involves completely new characters, and it’s hard to really care about them, at least personally. The only established character I got to see at any point was Kael’thas, apart from that it’s just venthyr doing their thing. A lot of politics as well. I have not seen Garrosh appear yet, though the story is not finished. Felt really boring compared to the Night Fae.

Oh, that’s unfortunate. I had to say I enjoyed Maldraxxus storyline much more compared to Bastion. In Maldraxxus we have Draka, we have Alexandros Mograine, Lady Vashj… all part of the established lore.

But then I chose Bastion on my main because I cared too much about Uther… And that’s … all we have there. Uther. It’s mostly about Bastion inner problems. Although I did have a nice questline in Redridge.

If Night fae has more established lore characters, I’ll choose it.

As for the gay representation - it really depends how it’s done. I’m conservative, it’s not my stuff, I don’t like it, especially if it’s pushed as a political agenda. I was glad to see that in Bastion and Pelagos it didn’t felt so… we also saw tauren becoming kyrian, so choosing the preferred form in the afterlife comes natural. So this representation didn’t bother me.

The same will happen if the Night fae representation is done properly… but I don’t know yet… It may be natural (like Pelagos), or feel forced and retconned (like Flynn and Shaw). If it’s the first one, I won’t care. But the second one will break my immersion.

I instantly regretted having chosen Fae from the moment I had to ride kind of dragonfly-rabbit with bulging eyes. Some creatures look really weird. Centaurs-argalis (?) are another example.

The garden is annoying. I don’t even work on it.

The global atmosphere makes me feel like evolving in a toddler cartoon. Everything is too clean and kind. I didn’t met any charismatic hero or chief. The queen looks like a green plant.

In short, I do not feel concerned in anything by what is going on among the Fae. I don’t even read the quests anymore.

I initially made this choice because Ardenweald looked a bit better than the other zones. I’m too lazy to change.

Having two alts with Bastion and Necrolords, looks like this third one has the option of trying.

If I’m not satisfied with the Fae, I may abandon them

I have to agree with Bodzarus.
I chose Night Fae with my main (=this char) and honestly I dislike it so much that I stopped playing her. Should’ve chosen Bastion as I initially planned

Soulshape in the Maw and the superior Troops and Adventurers make Night Fae a clear winner for me.

Nightfae sits well with a mage and they have good covenant skills. My main is a mage in nigth fae.

Before SL launched, every single guide online, every single person I seen was saying : If you’re mage GO KYRIAN!!!

How wrong they were.

Beyond ridiculous…go Venthyr to avoid being turned off! But be warned Theotar has tea parties, gossip, and parasols so who knows when he’ll come out of the closet. :smirk:

Venthyr, Venthyr, Venthyr. Life without door of shadows is grim, who doesn’t love gothic england themes? As for the Fae just… I just want to punch them. :pensive:

To answer other questions… haven’t met Kael’thas just yet but they do go on and on and on and on and on about Tyrande in the Fae one from what I’ve overheard. As a Hordie and a hater of Tyrande just bleh, no thank you.

The campaigns do indeed overlap but it’s more Bastion and Necrolords who do that, not Venthyr. So far I’ve just been to Bastion and that wasn’t a case of overlapping as going to another realm for something.

I’ma resist rolling my eyes here but even as someone who doesn’t care in the slightest about what you’re clearly refering to, I find it Val’sharah 2.0 cringefest.

Venthyr storyline has been really underwhelming. It’s barely even politics - we’re just collecting some power ups from different high-level Venthyr, mostly by killing them or helping them kill someone else (keeping this mostly spoiler free).

Night Fae not only has a better story, it is also the covenant that seems to have gotten the most love from the devs. You can get all sorts of appearances for your soul shape, that is also a massive quality of life thing, as it stays active indefinitely in rest areas. Their teleporter has daily quests attached. The Anima conduit treasure seemed a little more fun than others.

I would say it doesn´t matter. but today I witness this warrior telling another warrior to change his covenant cause the dude was a fairy.

so if you don´t mind people telling you what you should be then go for any.

So much this. People love Ardenweald, to me it seems an iteration on Val’sharah, Teldrassil and other enchanted forest areas.

First, you ask what is best for you and then you say that you don’t care about skills.

Is this some kind of low-level trolling attempt

Well if you follow my threads, you already know I’m playing this game because of the lore and storytelling. And since I hate competitive PVE, I don’t care about the skills anyway.

Ok. Here’s the general idea, if you don’t care about power.

Venthyr has a better looking plate set in my opinion, but night fae’s story is quite a lot more solid. And i did both of them so far. Night fae generally gets my vote between the two, even though before playing the story, i definitely would have chosen venthyr.

Campaigns sometimes overlap. But not always. And so far, they didn’t between these two. and neither between venthyr and necrolord. At least not yet.

as for the third question, you mean the gay couple? Nah. They’re just around for one chapter. And personally, i couldn’t care less if they were straight, or gay. They just say, sorry my husband’s this and that, and that pretty much sums it up. Really nothing special.

Еxcellent.

Based on the replies, I’ll most probably go for Night Fae. Plus I’m really curious about Tyrande.

Tyrande looks like a crazy old lady this expansion. I really didn’t like her character, EVER. Even in warcraft 3.

But even i have to admit, the way the story’s going, I’m curious too.

I can’t say the whole night elf race was intriguing to me. I never liked the fact they’re racists and their loyality towards alliances (present or past) wasn’t that strong I wanted to be.

Then in Cata and later MOP I remember people complained a lot that the storyline has gotten too orcs vs humans, and the other races don’t get attention. Since they started paying attention to Tyrande, the story became too interesting.

I did hope that the whole Alliance stuff will get more interesting. After all, the Horde story was the one that intrigued me. Different orcs clans. Different races, trying to work together. Scandals. Compare this to the Alliance we had - everyone looks alike, a high king that everyone accepted for no good reason. I wanted some kind of a diversity within the Alliance storyline.

I went Venthyr with my main, tbh I’m enjoying the story as i feel it fits into the lore of Shadowlands with what Denathrius has done. Its more about rebuilding the Venthyr to what they were and undoing the problems he caused and reestablishing their trust with other convents.
