It looks as if we no longer have the classic client authentic night time but something resembling the lighting of the Cataclysm client. Is this a bug that hasn’t been acknowledged or is there something I’ve missed? Did they really remove the night time with out addressing why?
Bump again. Any clarity on why the night time was nerfed?
If you care about actually having a night mode, please post here. Emphasis on the word post, a single person can’t keep bumping a thread. Otherwise they -will- not pay attention and this will go unchecked. The left is what we should be getting but currently we’re stuck with something resembling the example on the right.
I did not notice this as I was playing in Eversong last night and I don’t remember what its nighttime was like… For me it’s quite a big issue if it is so. Changing the very atmosphere of the world in such a way actually ruins the experience a lot.
This is only one example of a number of ‘Classic-like’ features broken by the upgrade to the TBC client. See this thread for many more examples, including ‘5 man UBRS’ and incorrect zone pop-up display text on PvP servers:
Retail client features wholesale incorporated into TBC client : classicwow (reddit.com)
Please, Blizzard, take note of this. We’re here to play CLASSIC, not retail. We want our dark nights, and we want our UBRS to be a raid!
I do love the night time mode we had in Classic, so I would very much like it back if it is indeed removed.
I haven’t really been on at night yet since TBC prepatch so haven’t noticed, but hopefully this is just a bug as night mode is my favourite.
So i went to the same spot as in OP’s example. First picture was taken 21.00 PM and the second one 23.20 PM. It looks the same as it did in Vanilla classic to me. I have everything cranked to max, including RTX. This was taken on current pre patch today.
I’ve read there’s issues with shadows flickering and SSAO but those too seem to work just fine. Mind you i did have flickering shadows issue on retail before i got my current RTX card.
Bumping for attention,
when poeple said tbc prepatch/tbc general feels rushed, idk what they ment with it, but this clearly is one thing Blizzard’s Classic team overlooked.
I’ve been taking screenshots at daytime from various places and then i’ll take nighttime shots for comparison 12 hours from now. This whole thing got me curious. I know how bad nights were back in Cata and it hasn’t been that bad yet.
If i dont get to witness Nagrand by night, im going to be miffed
This is big. One reason I wanted Classic was due to immersion, the world etc. It felt good to have proper nights again. Get it back to how it was, please.
Here’s more images from midday to midnight respectively. Screenshots were taken 12 - 13 hours apart.

Nightime looks pretty much the same as it did in Vanilla Classic, i think. Maybe it was fixed already? Could you guys post what it looks like on your end?
I’m playing on DX12
Latest drivers for 3080
I’ve seen some weird effects like the one where a small campfire esque lighting effect persists few yards ahead, like this:
Then i’ve seen square like shadows from random light sources. Rare though.
The darker SSAO/shadows, shaders or whatever it is they used in Classic Vanilla is no longer active on the TBC client which is basically just rushed alpha trash with lots of issues.
Here are some of the comparison screenshots I did with the 2 clients to show how beautiful Classic used to be and how flat and old TBC is right now:

I see what the problem is now. It’s SSAO interaction with objects. SSAO does not create any depth from shadows ON the objects themselfs but it does create depth FROM the objects. No wonder all the nooks and crevices look flat. This might explain why some players feel the nights are kind of off too. So it’s kind of half broken right now. Is this an issue on retail as well?
Edit: As for the actual nights being dark. They’re still dark on my end at least. SSAO does need fixing. I didn’t notice this at first since i’ve been farming honor like a sheep. RTX implementation seems to work. Like weapons and spikes from shoulder pieces creating shadows on player characters. Player shadows also interact with objects. It’s most noticeable on assets with opacity, like the ropes on Zeppelins. Subtle but a cool effect nonetheless.
Yeah was better when it was darker, added a bit spookyness to it in a way, spesialy in places like duskwood!
Blizzard could not give a damn making it accurate to TBC.
i so miss Omar and his team who game a F.
I also noticed flickering textures, especially in Felwood, mushrooms and stuff… turned off MSAA and it seems to have gone away.
The lighting on stuff is way off from before prepatch. Everything that moves is more visible than it should be, doesn’t blend in with the environment. Flickering graphics all the time. I have it set on classic style yet it doesn’t look the same.
Right now SSAO is not creating depth from shadows on the objects but it does create depth from the objects. Imagine a rock. SSAO creates depth (shadow) under a rock but not on the rock object itself. This is what is happening right now and why things look a bit flat. I don’t know how to explain it any better. Will probably be fixed at some point. There’s so many problems with the game right now as it is.
That is exactly what I’ve noticed since the latest BETA and prepatch build. You can easily test it with the rocks say between Orgrimmar and the zeppelin tower for instance, just stand beside any of them and turn SSAO off or on ultra. You can see a shadow under the rock, but not on the rock. While in Classic Vanilla all objects have a proper dark shadow covering the entire surface giving it more depth.
