Nightmare Incursions

As we approach the release of phase 3 of Season of Discovery, we wanted to take a quick moment to talk about the new Nightmare Incursion feature and to set a few expectations around how this will function. This is quite unlike anything we’ve done thus far in Season of Discovery and in order to prepare you for what you’ll face, we wanted to provide a short primer to help prepare you for your first few incursions.

So, what are Nightmare Incursions?

Nightmare Incursions are new outdoor content that is predominately PvE-focused (though PvP will occur on a PvP server in these ) . You’ll start each incursion with a quest that you get at new Field Captain NPCs outside of each of the dream portals located in Duskwood, Ashenvale, Feralas, and Hinterlands. This quest will have you taking on the new demon creatures that have taken up residence just outside the dream portals in each zone. Once you’ve neutralized a number of these threats in your current zone and made contact with an agent of the Emerald Wardens near the dream portal, you may return to the Field Captain to hand in the starter quest and you will be given a satchel with randomized mission that will take you into the nearby portal (to stage an “incursion” one could say) to perform a task. Upon interacting with the portal you will be transported into the dream to start your missions. These missions could be a number of things from missions to slay targets, gather resources, or even defeat a very powerful boss.

This content is very “old school” in nature as well, and is quite unlike more modern daily quest systems you’ve likely encountered in more contemporary versions of World of Warcraft. If you’ve ever done the Cenarion Hold Field Duty missions in Silithus that arrived with patch 1.9 in Original WoW, you will notice some parallels and similarities when doing Nightmare Incursions. Season of Discovery is a version of Classic WoW, and we wanted this content to feel right at home with the other repeatable content available in the original version of the game.

What level do I need to be to participate in Nightmare Incursions?

Nightmare incursions are separated out by level with Duskwood being predominately level 25 content, Ashenvale being Level 40 content, and Feralas and the Hinterlands being level 50 content.

What should I do to prepare for Nightmare Incursions?

The Nightmare Incursions missions are flagged as elite quests and while you can complete some of them solo, others will be very challenging to complete alone. Due to the randomized nature of the missions you are given as well, it’s possible to get a group-based mission while playing solo, or gathering-based missions that may require someone in the party to be able to use herbalism, skinning, or mining to complete.

Therefore it is our recommendation that when planning to tackle this content, you form a three to five player group to do so. This way when each member of the group hands in the initial quest, and each member gets their own randomized mission (all of which are sharable with up to 4 other players) you have a variety of activities to tackle during that incursion. Grouping will likely be the most efficient way to gain reputation or experience as well, as you can knock out multiple missions in a single trip, rather than needing to return to the waking world in between missions.

There’s a lot more to discover about Nightmare Incursions and we want you to venture into this content yourself to find out more. We did feel that due to the nature of this content however, it made sense to get at least some information in your hands to prepare you for when Nightmare Incursions go live later this week, in case you wanted to coordinate grouping with your friends.

Thanks for taking the time today with us to go over this primer for Nightmare Incursions, and we are really looking forward to seeing you brave the dangers of the Emerald Nightmare with us on Thursday, April 4th at 21:00 BST!

I’m looking forward to doing these, Hopefully the gains are quick!

“Due to the randomized nature of the missions you are given as well, it’s possible to get a group-based mission while playing solo, or gathering-based missions that may require the usage of herbalism, skinning, or mining to complete.”
Does this mean you can get a quest that you cannot complete due to not having the correct gathering profession? - Or would these still be completable by obtaining the gathering materials in another way? (Say with the help of a gatherer friend)

Probably, if it will be something like Silithus as Blizzard said, you can just buy materials for these quests on AH. I don’t think that they will be BoP.

that would highly suck, given travel/postal times to get these items.

I can 100% say now if thats the case, people just Dungeon leveling again

These are really well implemented. Lots of fun. Great xp. Encourages working together. Love it!

You can trade the items. Don’t think they can go on ah though as they are conjured.

I’m spreading this message far and wide, and I’m not bothered by any negative responses it may attract.

This is directed at Blizz:

The sudden distribution of free gold within a few hours, which took many, including myself, nearly two months to accumulate, is frankly unacceptable.

Are you suggesting that those who happened to be online during the server issues, or those who immediately engaged with the incursions, were just lucky recipients of nearly 1000g?

I dedicated two phases meticulously earning that amount of gold, only to see it handed out effortlessly to others.

While I understand that nothing may be done to rectify this situation, even if it were to be “fixed,” it still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. I invested close to three months of effort into accumulating that wealth, yet some obtained it with minimal effort.

Let’s wait and see if Blizz addresses this issue.

Once people hit 50 it will also be a lot easier to farm gold. They said in the announcement video they didn’t want too much prepping - don’t be surprised when over prepping doesn’t give you the edge you hoped. Gold always devalues when a new phase of wow comes around.

I’m just confused to how it is possible to mess up this bad with it. Devs put in the rewards and were surprised at the amount people got as said rewards? Did they nerf the XP at the same time as the gold?

The XP remained in touch from what I know. I hope there are less people who will exploit the money glitch now, so that it actually becomes enjoyable.

is it just the same quests lines time after time?

cuz so far not sure but it reeks of retail. Sorta like oh well guess go here and everyone else is running there lets do it as well.

Maybe I just don’t undersstand it?

Really hope this content isn’t “mandatory”

The whole point of SOD was to explore more of the classic content but they just add something that basically allows you to skip all the 40->50 conten!!!

All it does it make the big open vast world of classic empty and barren cuz everyone is doing the braindead content in the small part of the game, basically isntanced content

This is also how you create poor community interaction, quick grp content and bye

Can’t even tell the bots from the players, everyone running the same exact loop

ps: where is my mail with 500g?

Why is Ashenvale designated for level 40 players while Duskwood is set for level 25? Where’s the logic in that? Wouldn’t it make more sense if it were the other way around? Ashenvale is typically the initial zone where Alliance and Horde intersect in levels 20-30. Duskwood, on the other hand, poses challenges for Horde players as they have to navigate through the level 30+ Northern Stranglethorn Vale, and it’s generally considered unfriendly to Horde. Although the impact might not be significant at level 40, it would be more coherent to swap their level requirements in the next hotfix.

It’s a weekly or daily quest (by design) that you can do an infinite amount of time and resulting in 40-50 with an average of 30 min per level. (4-5 hours total)

Probably this never happened in WoW, therefore the unexpected issue, but people are already blocking progress by afking with the rescue quest NPCs, and keeping the “recover” mission object in use so others can’t loot it. Since the gold nerf came so fast, I hope some solution for this will be implemented too…

Dumbest design ever

There are so many things wrong with this …

i guess that is why they shut down server now.

The system for sharing the quests and skipping most of them is the most toxic thing i have seen in this game, make them into a daily quest and increase the reputation you get and with higher reputation you can pick up more quests.
