No crit on Glacial Spike despite Shatter

Hello !!

I’m trying to learn the boltspam build, but I have a problem with Glacial Spike. Despite using SHatter correctly and casting Flurry before I even cast Glacial Spike to make sure Pyroblast crits properly, sometimes Glacial Spike’s Shatter damage will be around 2-3M and not 6-8M like how it’s supposed to be…
I have even seen people with my ilvl (697) pulling 11k average damage for Glacial Spike on heroic raids and I don’t know how that’s even possible.

I don’t think I grasp the subtleties of the spec, can anyone help me please ?

Just tested this on dummy either u dont shatter at all or i dont know but it was always a crit for me

You need 33% Crit to have it always crit

There’s no way some crits deal 2–3M damage while others deal 6–8M… it must not be a crit.
The reason players with lower item levels can sometimes do more damage than you is that GS damage depends not only on Intelligence but also on the Mastery and Versality stats. Check its description.

It’s highly unlikely to be a crit for 2-3m damage. My non-crits do 4.3 million damage on average, while my crits do 9.8m on average at 699 Ilvl.

As said above, you are not guaranteed a critical strike through Shatter, all it does is add a 1.5 multiplier to your current critical strike chance + 50%, so you need 33.3% crit chance as a baseline to always crit.

33.3 x 1.5 = 49.95
49.95 + 50 = 99.95%

It’s meant to be 33.3 recurring, but you get the idea.

You’ve also got a number of talents that are passive maintenance buffs that can fluctuate or fall off. As well as intellect and our mastery stat buffing the damage of both Icicles and Glacial Spike, along with versatility just buffing Glacial Spike, if you have a lot on your gear, or via trinkets/procs.
