"No Sound" Issues on MacOS with Version 10.0.2.46479

Hi,

I have an interesting issue with my WoW install on MacOS Ventura (13.0) on a Mac mini M1.

tldr; On MacOS, in-game sound device selection only works if a device with a microphone is connected, if not, no sound is available.

After installing the Dragonflight Beta 10.0.2.46479 I lost my sound on all installations (WotLK Classic, WoW Shadowlands and Dragonflight Beta). The main issue was the WoW Audio Settings UI no longer presenting the other sound devices besides the “System Default” and “NoSound Driver” for selection.

After finding a blue post on the topic in patch 9.2.7 I checked the microphone privacy permissions and only “WoW Beta” showed up but was enabled.

  • I removed the WTF, Interface and Cache folder without effect.
  • I reset the “CVars” as requested in the support FAQ for audio problems to no effect.

After configuring the microphone in battle.net itself, answering the resulting OS questions for permissions, battle.net also showed up in the macOS privacy settings and was enabled.

Since there are no audio device permissions in the macOS settings (or I am blind  ) I tried to connect a headset with microphone → “Eureka” sound is there.

If I connect a device with a microphone to Bluetooth or the headphone jack, after restarting WoW, I:

  • hear sound
  • can see all audio devices and can select them.

on all versions of the game I have installed (WotLK Classic, Dragonflight Beta, Wow Shadowlands Retail), even if the “microphone device” is not the selected sound output.

Disconnecting the device with a microphone brings me reproducible back to no sound and no selection possible, even if the game is running already. No mic, no sound.

All devices were available to other applications on the OS while testing.

Hope you have time to fix that before Release, I am much to lazy to remember to connect my AirPods and restart the game every time I want to play WoW

Happy to help debugging if needed.

Have a nice weekend. Best Regards.

UPDATE: The solution Épo posted worked. Thanks for pointing it out. Reference to the topic with the direct solution: https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/wow/en/wow/t/no-sound-m1-mini/1308666/48

I referenced my logs and the Teams driver was installed before the Dragonflight Beta and sound in WoW worked, so there was some interaction with the Beta, but removing the Teams driver resolved the issue.

I’m on a Mac too and my sound keeps cutting out, with my AirPods or a regular set of headphones. Works again after restarting the game, but not for long.

I am not sure whether it was the Update to macOS Ventura that allowed me to connect my iPhone to the Mac as a microphone or if it was the installation of black hole, that registered as a virtual microphone, but after doing both of these things at once, the issue was resolved.

Thanks for giving me the idea of it being related to sound input, not output.

Until Blizzard manages to fix this, here is how to install Homebrew and Black Hole:

Install Homebrew from https://brew.sh (just copy the command from the site into your terminal, enter your passowrd and let the installation run, it might take quite a while, depending your Mac on what is already installed on your system).
Once Homebrew is installed, paste this command into your Terminal and hit enter:

brew install blackhole-2ch

The 2 channel version of Black Hole is enough.

I posted with the wrong character and it seems I can’t change it afterwards, so here’s the right one.

This probably has to do with Microsoft Teams installed (no sound), please follow the steps in this topic : https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/wow/t/no-sound-m1-mini/1308666/49

It worked for me.
