Good day!
Just want to know your opinion, guys:
I am new to SoD. My mistake was ‘maining’ a class(mage-heal) that can’t tank. What i’ve noticed so far while looking for a group for 5-man coin-runs:
- I almost never see tanks in LFG
- People(heal + 3 dd) would rather wait for 30+min than change runes for tanking (warlocks/warriors/ferals). No joke, i’ve been to a party and we waited for like ~40min and then just disbanded - ofc i couldn’t force a warlock to tank, although i asked kindly if he could help us out.
Before you say it: yes, i am now leveling a tank, and i defo will be maining a class that can tank. Situation that i observe now is just unaccceptable.
So i wonder, if the fact that ppl don’t want to tank(actually goes both for SoD and Retail i think?) is:
- A game design issue?
- Jusy my luck and there actualy are no problems with tank shortage?
- Nobody needs coinruns anymore this late in SoD?
- Anything else that i can’t think of.
Thanks to anyone who will share their opinion.
I used to tank when I was a younling, but I’m an old disgruntled goat now and I prefer to relax while gaming rather than having a mini heart attack trying to keep aggro from overly excited DPS going nuclear as soon as you glance at an enemy.
There’s far more room for error when playing dps or healer (less so) than If you mess up as a tank too imo.
I liked the extra satchels they had for healers and tanks for a little incentive.
Luckily we live in an ultra capitalist Azeroth though and anything can be bought with shiny gold coins
WTS Tanking service 100g per run (each) and you all must /bow to me at the start and finish for I am your Tank Lord Savior
You could argue the game has never been so sweaty/elitist/toxic/unwelcoming as it is now, which I think turns people off wanting to tank as they can get abused for being a newbee/not playing like a parser. Unhinged manchildren screaming to never group with “x” player cause they suck etc in public chat, happens occasionally.
I dont mind having a new tank, people have to learn, but there’s lots of impatient people out there that make it hard for them I would say too.

Most tank do their run with their guild instead of pickups.
tanking require more attention than healing/dps so lot of ppl don’t wanna do it
and the problem where you need a shaman/pal in you group to be able to keep aggro is super annoying too.

Lets take kara as an example… on horde they look for: 1000+ gs and multiple full clears.
Ontop of that they HR anything that is good. And you wonder why so few ppl bother with tanking
90% of those dps goons dont even know how treath works.

I love tanking. However, I cannot play my tank alt because I have to afk at invasions the whole day.

When you tank you gear up and get coins 20x times faster than anyone else.
90% of the playerbase in wow only play dps, it’s always been that way. They don’t know the abilities of mobs and bosses and such and they don’t want to.
Like if you hit 60 today and started tanking you’d be finished with dungeons and coins within one week max. If you logged in every day, less.
Tanking is chill, specially as sham. But i dislike tanking as rogue, it feels so clunky. Never tanking as rogue, not until they change some core mechanics (and we know they wont at this point)
Love to tank on my shammy. Its just that when ever i offer to tank instances and stuff(like aq20, mc and bwl) And i notify that i dont need anything from these raids. Mind if i need for my offspec. Its fine at the start as long as i dont get anything. But as soon as i win something ive SR or not sr’ed. People start complaining right away.
So i stopped tanking for randoms.
i love to tank on my bear but im now t2 geared with the exception of the lodestone and wiht t2.5 helm and shoulders and the quatermasters rune staff from khara on day 1 which is on my naxx bis list so i need nothing form coins so why would i run dungeons and more? if there was something ACTUALLY useful or worthwhile for me form the new reel boss like guaranteed leather scraps for a druid instead of random ones id be more inclined to pug tank dungeons but as it stands there’s no point until p8 where id need orbs again
Yes, it’s a game design problem. The tank is expected to lead the group, know the way, you cannot relax because you determine the pace of the entire run. It’s too much work. I like to turn on a podcast and turn off my brain while I’m playing. Can’t do that while tanking. I need to be dialed in and it’s not relaxing.

I like tanking in sod, I play my t3 warlock tank daily, do scholo->strat twice a week, occasionally brd or brs, dmn when I need rums, preferably with guildies ofc but often invite pugs off the /lfg channel.
I dont do it to gain something for myself. I dont need anything of reals, reputation or money, I just like playing the game.
I play healer/dps alt but soloely guildruns because I cant stand bad tanks.
The tank shortage is real because of the tanking good requires either huge gear and knowledge of the dungeon or teamplay from group which is rare thing to see in a pug.

tank playstyle is boring sorry hehe. If u tank spec in your group deserve extra reward . maybe its balance
same i like to tank with my warlock , both firetank/shadowtank are fun
I’m playing only as tanks in sod, I have pala, warr, druid and lock and i’m tanking Naxx with all of them.
From my perspective, ppl preffer to play dps because playing a tank is like working as IT support xD When it is going well, nobody cares. But when something is wrong, everybody is enraged
Tanking is a big responsibility. If dps will possition himself poorly, he will die most likely. If tank will possition himself or the boss wrong, it is wipe. Not everybody want that kind of responsibility, that’s why most of the grps are lacking tanks.
Instructor is actually good example. Lots of groups are wiping there, cause ppl that never tank have to take the boss and position him. If not done correctly, mc will break and/or shout will kill half of the raid. Ask your priest if he likes that kind of responsibility :> he probably would preffer to zug zug
If I had the option to send Reals to my alts, I might be convinced.
But when threat is such a big part of the game, and most people think threat is just a tank problem, it’s just not fun to tank anything unless you’re after something specific yourself.
And as for Hr-Runs, hell no! I’m not lifting a damn finger for you!
Gee, I wonder why.
A guild has 2, 3 tank positions max. 15+ for DPS.
Tanks are expected to lead and pace the run, making it less chill.
Mistakes are often pinned on the tank.
People whine if you roll on DPS loot as tank, even if tank is just your offspec.
I do tank myself, but really, it’s bit of an game design issue. And not an easy one to solve.
what piss me off the most is when no one want to tank but somehow when it’s about rolling off spec tank item suddently everyone has a offtank spec

I really enjoy Paladin tanking, i did it to level my paladin, but man Ret pally is so fun atm, i prefer to DPS.
but will swap back and forth
What some ppl already said, I am only tanking with guildies mostly, I am never doing dungeons with a full non guildie party most of the time.
Just have had bad experience with some groups and instead of the hassle its easier to w8 until guildies is online to go do something.
Pala tanks overall are great imo and I enjoy when I am tanking on it, but for example with Karazhan, some players I have encountered have good gear (AQ gear) but still cant do the dps checks in Kara for example and due to I need loot from Dark rider on my paladin I rather go with guildies there
My guild has lots of tanks, as well as offspec players that enjoy tanking.
The problem? Well, whenever anybody wants to do a dungeon; many guildies are more than happy to join. So despite my guild having lots of tanks, none of them join pugs.
Why would anybody ever join a random pug when reliable guildies are always available?
