Non-roleplayer questions for roleplayers

I agree on the mount advice, and I’d like to add, as others have pointed out in similar threads:
If a roleplayer rides a terrifying mount, like a dragon - or turns into a dragon - that is quite a display of power. I wouldn’t.

Also mentioned by others, on similar topics;

if your character has some extraordinarily powerful abilities, maybe there should be a serious weakness/disadvantage to balance it out.

If you have a story about how your character got his mount, that might add an interesting aspect to your story.

Assuming mounts are pretty expensive/ kind of a privilege, I vary between - off the top of my head - (combinations of):

  • I do not own this mount, it belongs to my faction/order/…, but it is assigned to me as long as I work for said faction/order/…
  • This mount was a gift from my well-to-do family member / good friend (who has spent years of his/her life campaigning and gathering wealth.
  • This is my mount, I have spent years of my life campaigning and gathering wealth.
  • I got a special deal on this mount because I did some work for its previous owner.

Even for someone who is already roleplaying, there are so many helpful observations and tips in this thread, so thank you for creating it, Bjurnalf - and to everyone for offering their view on things

I´m not that experienced, so I haven´t got much much to add, but being referred to as “Archdruid” in the Dreamgrove is certainly something I choose to ignore all together. I prefer the “random adventurer” approach, as you call it.

It might not be “correct”, but I tend to “pick” what makes sense for my character. It´s not always easy to navigate around the universe, and staying completely ‘true’ to everything is impossible. Did you, for example, know, that it takes a matter of 14 days to travel through the jungle of Feralas!?

As long as what I do, does not ‘interfere’ too much with the ongoing story, I like to think it is all alright.

I have yet to encounter one of the Allied Races in character - that remains to be discovered. But I am curious to experience, how it will “fit”.

On that note, meeting a member of an allied race could also vary widely depending on their individual personality.
I have personally experienced an honest Ren’dorei eager to prove herself to her new allies, and another one who seemingly committed high treason (against the Alliance, not the Horde (who probably consider all Alliance void elves traitors))… And still other Ren’dorei who seem to fit somewhere in between.

Unlike the void elves, the Lightforged Draenei do possess the means to create more Lightforged (unless I misunderstood), which means you might meet a Lightforged draenei who is thousands of years old (but relatively unfamiliar with Azeroth), or a relatively young/new one, who may know Azeroth better, but not be as experienced with his or her Lightforged existence.

And I did not know that about Feralas, that’s interesting…
I suppose the world of Warcraft is somewhat simplified for… simplicity.
Like those ships that sail halfway around the planet…
They probably take tens of hours, if not days, realistically.

Well. The Lightforged intro quest line is you the PC helping a Draenei on his trials that lead to him becoming Lifghtforged so they can still infuse new members of the Army with Light.

Those are all very good points too, thank you for sharing

Holy light there’s so much good stuff in this thread. I don’t even know where to begin to answer!
I guess all I can say is that I’ve read it all and trying to remember it all.

Currently I’m writing the story of my character. Which as I feared started as notes, became a short story and is very quickly starting to become a novel…
But hey, it’s fun!
I also started the character on Argent Dawn EU to take a look around. Very insecure and don’t know how to approach people.

So maybe that’s a question as well, how to you respectfully approach people while they’re Roleplaying? Don’t want to interrupt something they’re doing.

Good question

I do find that a bit tricky to be honest

Some people RP in a private chat, so that is of course difficult to join

But I think my most cryptic and best answer must be: Feel the vibes :upside_down_face:

What I mean from own experince is:

When you notice a couple having a dramatic debate, it feels so wrong to enter that debate.
Or a military group are having a drill, that is also a bad time to enter the scene

But some players and groups give some vibrations, that they are fine to approach by the way they enteract with their surroundings - they play with each other, but are also aware of what is going on around them

But I guess a way you could try roleplaying with new/randoms, could be approaching, talking to or greeting the lone walker
They are often people who haven’t gotten into RP ye, but would love to - or just players who are breathing in the atmosphere :sunglasses:

That is a good question. I remember my first time engaging in roleplay to be absolutely terrifying, hah  I could hardly contain the joy of immersion!

Hm, perhaps thinking of a reason your character is where he is, is he looking for something or someone? A search that will prove unfruitful but give him a reason to just relax in said place for a period of time? Maybe the one he is looking for will pass by, in the corner of his eye - in case you want to move on and excuse yourself? Does that make sense?

If you worry about interrupting people; you can include it in your beginning emote - like, include a certain hesitation, or another sign of feeling a tad insecure?
Although not all do that; sharing your characters thoughts, since technically it´s not what others would be able to “see” if that makes sense - I find that it can enhance the interactions on a deeper level.

That being said, I think most people would enjoy a “fresh” and unexpected roleplay session. So dive in!

@Bjurnalf: You have already gotten several pieces of excellent advice.

Using the /emote command can bring various kinds of openings…

A clumsy character might…

/emote accidentally falls down the final few stairs. He appears to be slightly injured and dazed.

One of my dwarves…

/emote beckons the barkeep over and orders a large glass of ice water. Barkeep seems a bit puzzled, but as Morander tosses a few large pieces of silver on the table, fills the order quickly.

One of my gnomes…

/emote is greeted by laughing children. They know “Uncle Regom” always has few “magic” tricks up his sleeves… on occasion even a small coin or some ice cream…

In other words, it is not necessary to interact with someone else directly, but sort of let the situation develop… or not.

Yes it’s been absolutely overwhelming with the fantastic advice I’ve received and so many helpful tips. Yours included!
It’s actually quite embarrassing that I’ve played the game for as long as I have but never knew that you could make your own emotes…
Never too late to learn something new I guess.

I’ve got to admit that initially I was a little reluctant to create the post. Unsure if there would be any response at all. But it’s been so fantastic. And I hope some other people that might be curious about giving role-playing a go can find some motivation and tips and tricks here!

I agree, there is so much good advice here, it should almost be “stickied” (is that the term?) for future referance.

I just want to add, in addition to everything else in here, that the initiation of contact should make sense to you and your character.

You could ask directions for something (however, keep in mind that city guards - if you are in a city - know some of the answers, but not) like the best place to eat, a good fishing spot, or something along those lines.

Perhaps your character meets someone carrying or wearing an item that makes you curious… Why not ask them where they got it?

Role play is just a “crying game” so i will just pretend i dont matter all that much in the universe.
