Noob and priest

hello; new player here, holy priest, lv 24, so i have questions mostly about dungons, when the team is experienced player i get carried easily and never die, but when we are all noobs, i realise that i’m bad & actually cannot save anyone and i kinda dont know what to do when sh.t gets real and we start all dying of some damage

1 should i use all spells just because i unlocked them ? i am not talking about the situational spell like dispell or revive… example : holy nova : should i even bother trying to fit this one in my “noob rotation” or is it better to use only flash heal as a better filler when all is on cooldown ? the shield spell (single target) seems kinda weak too, what do you do with it ?

2 when a wipe is happening, and i have 3 seconds to chose someone to save before we all die, who do i heal the most ? the tank ? a dps ? me (lol)? if i can save two, should it be me + the tank or tank + dps ?

3 how can i stop combat so i can revive someone ? sometimes, someone dies, and i tell the group “stop attacking so i can rez him” but nbdy listen; only one time i rezed someone & the guy was happy but it was the end anyway i just revived him so he could loot thats all

4 should i ignore people who don’t follow the tank ? iiam personally always behind the tank but sometimes some player are doing stuff like killing side mobs by themself, and they are about to die, should i leave the team to go help this guy, or let him die alone ?

5 ui and macro : for now, i have 2 full action bars that i can easily use with my mmo mouse & keyboard. should i learn macro too ? i use the party frames to see people"health bars, but i would like to see their health bars on top of their character too, like ennemy mobs, how can i have that please ?

6 what is the favorite stat for my gear ? intellect and haste look intressting but maybe i’m wrong tell me what to prioritize plz

7 best healing spell that i should always use ? maybe there is something power full that i am under estimating; tell me like the top 10 healing spells please ?

8 the spell that allows 3 holy fire in a row with no cooldown. is it forbidden to use this since it cost 500 mana ? i use it all the time… word of power : chastify : what to do with this stun ?

9 mob’s attack. when there is a swirl on the ground, i know i have to dodge damage…but i still get surprised by other type of damage that are unexcepted to me as a noob !! i noticed that, if i stay far in a corner of the room, i can realibly stay alive and support the group. should i do that, staying hidden in the corner, and not interracting with mobs ?

10 boss who spawn multiple little mobs. tanks take aggro, all is fine. then the boss proceed to spawn a million of mobs who target everyone ?? how can i survive/help other survive when we are all getting attacked like that please, this stuff is always hard to manage

thx for reading and sorry for the wall of text, if you could answer to my questions, and also give me the secret tips on how to make my life easier as healer, but i said easier not harder so if you tell me some macros please you explain me with details i am only level 20+ so very new but ive playing other mmo…please help me thanks  btw : am not lv 18, this acc is my other one, my main acc is lv 24 lol not much difference but still

Welcome to Azeroth!

I would need to write a book to tell you all the things you should know, and will eventually end up knowing.

I’m going to take a shortcut.

For anything about how to build and play your class, see Icy Veins: https://www.icy-veins.com/wow/holy-priest-pve-healing-guide

That guide is for max level players, so you won’t have the spells and talents, but use whatever you do have for your level.

For anything about quests, items, NPCs, dungeons, use wowhead.com

This is a massive set of short video guides to everything in the game. It’s insanely long, but is broken up into about 2-minute segments, so you can jump to what you’re interested in. It doesn’t include Chromie time, because it was created just before that, but it is otherwise excellent.

In general, YouTube is often the best way to learn about anything in the game. There are millions of hours of content there. Just be careful about the date of the video. The game gets changes every patch. Some things, like class rotations, can change very quickly, while bigger structrures rarely change at all. So if in doubt, check out the more recent material.

I was looking around for recent videos, and I found this one that even I understand, so it might be helpful to you:

OK, to your questions:

  1. I don’t play Holy Priest, so I refer you to Ict Veins, and https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=holy+priest+beginner+guide

  2. You save the tank. There may be some special cases, but in general, if the party is wiping, the tank is the only one who might survive, and if the tank dies, the rest of you are dead anyway. You are the second priority. Tank and healer can complete a dungeon; the DPS are just there to shorten the run.

  3. Healing is not so hard. Random groups are hard. You can’t stop combat. You can’t make people in random groups behave sensibly. Low level dungeons are supposed to be easy, and they are, for experienced people. And most people will keep running and pulling accordingly.

  4. If someone decides to go solo, it’s all on them. Ignore them. Your should be 5 to 20 yards behind the tank at all times. Your #1 job is to keep the tank alive.

If the healer dies, it’s the tank’s fault.
If the tank dies, it’s the healer’s fault.
If the DPS die, it’s their own damn fault.

  1. Healers mostly work on mouseover healing. You move the mouse cursor over the raid frame of the party member you want to heal, and press the heal button to heal that person. You can do that by setting up a separare macro for each ability, but you can also uise an addon like Vuhdo or Healbot of Clique. Here’s a video that explains in more detail
  1. For all classes, your primary stat is one of Intellect, Strength, Agility . In your case, it’s Intellect. After that, you have the secondary stats. I just looked up icy Veins https://www.icy-veins.com/wow/holy-priest-pve-healing-stat-priority and for dungeons, Haste and Crit are next best, and about equally good. However, you won’t get a lot of choice in stats while levelling, so just focus on Intellect for now.

  2. See section 5.2 Dungeon Healing on this page https://www.icy-veins.com/wow/holy-priest-pve-healing-easy-mode

  3. I don’t see Holy Word: Chastise doing that, so I don’t know exactly what you mean, but I would say that doing damage is not your main function, and managing your mana is up to you. If you are not running out of mama, you are fine. Remember you can sit and drink between pulls. You won’t get a full drink, but you may be able to top up. When you are out of mana (OOM) and really NEED a break for a full drink, you should type in “Mana Break” or just “MB”. The tank SHOULD know to stop when you say that, but again, parties are not rational.

  4. Yes!! If you can stand quietly out of the fight, you should do that. That is the ideal playstyle for healing casts.

  5. If mobs are attacking you, RUN TO THE TANK! Normally, a Priest should stay at range, but if you get aggro, you get close to the tank so that he can grab the mobs from you. But you are describing some specific encounter? Sometimes, mobs are untankable - that is, they can’t be distracted by others damaging them. In those fairly rare cases, you are still better off runningto the tank so that he and the DPS can AoE them down.

I know that I have given only a very short set of answers. But I hope that videos and sites I reference make up for it. Please ask again about anything else you want to know, or for more explanations!

.

P.S. One other thing. I see this character is on Turalyon. Turalyon is an OK server, but if you intend to play seriously later, at high level, you would be better on one of the large servers, and weighted toward your faction. What server is your level 26 on?

Hello and thanks a lot for the detailed answer; my first character was indeed in turalyon but that was when i had no clue there was a french server, now i am playing Uldaman french server bcs i am fr, but yes lv 26 blood elf, is it the right server for it ?

my friend want me to start again in the Ally side with his new alt so we level together with ally quests, but i told him i just want to reach lv 60 at least first before doing alts, i don’t know if i should start again in ally or not tbh

ty for the advice for dungons you rly answered my questions & i’ll have a look at both websties and the video you showed me

Well, if you want French language, that is obviously most important.

Here is a list of French realms with their relative Alliance and Horde populations

The best realm for you, when you get to endgame, is the one with most characters of your faction, but you do have cross-realm parties, and even cross-faction now so it’s not as important as it used to be.

Firstly do not worry about the fact that you get carried. It is normal and the dungeons are designed that way so that there is not so much for you to do as a healer.

Also scaling is wonky and sb +- 20 can do massive dmg/hps rolling his face on keyboard while you do everything perfectly with little impact.

Just approach this as a chill tutorial, put only spells you need for now.

Try to get used to the spells that will be your roatation at level 70.

Read one guide on the spec I.e:

To get a general idea on how the class plays and try to emulate it. I like to put all the CDs on my second bar that I call “ohh god we are going to DIE!!” bar and keybind it to ctr+ number when I am learning new healer.

So my 1-5 keys will be normal rotation and ctr+ 1-5 will be spells I will start smashing in panic mode.
After some time you will get used to just using specific ones more fitting the situation.

I would put as little spells as needed in the beginning. Just to keep yourself from getting overwhelmed.

When it comes to priority healing:

  1. Always save yourself first. You can’t help anyone if you are dead

  2. Tank. You can solo most boses with you + tank.

  3. Dps

Not so sure about number 1. Most times, if the tank goes down, at least one dps will follow before anyone can get the tank up. If the healer goes down, the group can usually pop defensives or use a health pot while they get the healer back up.

Hi there,

I appreciate that I am not adding to the conversation but I’d just like to take the time to say thank you. I am returning to Wow after many years away and I wanted to do all the things that I never did, was not ‘good’ enough to do, and even that I was too scared to do.

One of those things is healing. I always thought it was a great role to play but was always too frightened of being so rubbish that I would lead to the demise of any 5 man that I was a part of.

Having read your post, while I wouldn’t say I am confident now, I would say I feel that I will dive in and give it my all.

My critique of the reply that you gave is all good. I found it easy to follow, full of snippets of a ‘real life’ healer, and some guidance/direction that would be foolish not to follow, or at least heed.

Thank you for the great post and thank you to the original poster of the question.

All the best, guys,

DocP

Thank you for the compliment.

I will say that healing is the one thing I never succeeded at myself.

I started a Druid once, specifically for learning to heal in BGs and dungeons. I just about made it to 60, at the time, which is like 30 now.

I did learn to hack the healing a bit. My main problem was NOT focusing on hostile mobs. As a DPS or a tank, my instanct was very strong to tab and do damage.

Parties, though … I gave up after a run in Stratholme with a suicidal tank who insisted on pulling as much as possible in all directions, causing multiple wipes. But that was only the last straw.

My best advice to you is to find some people you can party with, especially someone who tanks. If you can team up with a regular tank friend, and you know each other’s abilities, you will have it made. At max level, join a community like Scared of Dungeons (Alliance) Scared of Dungeons EU EN to group with a stable bunch of friendly people.

Hi again,

You are very welcome :+1:

Your post is all the more remarkable as you say you think you did not succeed. I wonder if that is modesty speaking as you come across as a very pleasant, modest sort of person?

Yes, I think that is more great advice to join up with others. I remember from when I did play that you could get some really nasty, horrid pieces of work in PUGs that would flame the tank for too big a pull, too small a pull, not pulling the ‘big bad’ the correct way. The healer would overheal and they are rubbish, they would underheal, and you guessed it, they are rubbish. The other DPS created too much aggro and pulled from the tank…on and on and on.

I am going to take my time and enjoy the game this time. I will find a guild or others to play with that I actually want to play with. After all, this is meant to be fun, right?

Thanks again. Your post is great and I appreciate your advice, guidance and for simply being a decent enough person to get back to me.

So far my experience of coming back has been great  ty and all the best to you and yours
