I’ve tried to find answers online, but most responses are years old, and this game changes often!
How do crits work? Does a ‘crit’ deal 100% bonus damage, or is it different for PvP?
I read that ele Shamans deal increased crit damage, is this true?
Do Fire Mages receive any bonus damage for critting, when their crits are guaranteed? Or is this a wasted stat on them

Crit % is 150% in PvP, this was nerfed many months ago.
This applies to both healing and damage.
If you don’t consider class modifiers, an example would be:
Flash heal heals for 100k normal heal. If it crits, it will be 150k heal.
Same for damage. A 150k normal Mortal Strike would be 225k if it crit.

your math aint adding up bro
a crit for 100k normal would be 250k
100k normal - 150k crit = 50% crit mod
100k normal - 250k crit = 150% crit mod
as for damage:
damage is diffierent
it would be
150k normal - 375k crit ( minus armour deductions ) = between 250k - 300k
…
and then for both you have other modifiers like Mastery % and verstaility %
generally versatility is 30% modifier in pvp
Please revisit your math classes.
It’s very simple.
150% of 100k is 150k.
Damage is the same.
This is all without critical damage modifiers. E.g things like Chaos bolt scaling with crit chance, etc, which are rare and only for a few classes via talents.

if it calculates on values as a baseline then yes you are correct
but if its number X % it wouldnt be
i always thought it was damage Times % modifiers
example:
- my crits do a lot more than +50% more value
a non critical would be around 70kish and a crit 200k+
It depends what you are comparing with what.
If you compare your non-bursting non-crits to your bursting crits, of course the difference will be bigger.
You can see this easily on something with a channeled ability, such as Rapid fire. On a PvP dummy rapid fire on my semigeared hunter ticks for about 22.5k. The crits tick for 34.5k-35k, which is the exact value considering MM has 4% bonus crit max dmg.
If crits were double or more, the crit ticks would be 50k or more, by your above logic.
And crit dmg happens after modifiers. So if you got some buffs and your normal rapid fire starts ticking for let’s say 30k, the crits will be for about 46k.
think the difference is between if its
Additions or multiplications
crits on rapid fire for me do 70k ish
might be other modifiers at work here, like mastery vers armour etc
I’m giving example numbers.
The crit damage increase happens after the other modifiers.
The same goes for healing. If your Flash heals normally heal for 100k, you have some modifiers up, maybe they start healing for 150k (normals). If those modified 150k normals get a lucky crit, they will be 225k crit heals. Same for damage.
150% is the fixed value for all crits when there is no specific crit damage modifier talent. This was nerfed from 175% a few months ago.
i feel this value for crit makes it less appealing, at least for pvp , if thats the case, id rather get mastery or vers for a flat %
Yes, as I wrote above, crit is widely avoided in almost all healer and DPS specs these days. Mastery is flat guaranteed damage / healing for most specs therefore being better, excluding the specs that need Haste more, such as Resto druid, casters, etc
It’s a fairly dead stat most of the time, and the classes that do crit you hard usually have built in crit chance talents for that, such as Windwalker and Rogues
bit of a shame really, crits always look great on the screen
It’s part of the attempts of devs to balance the game and slow it down, as most people find it very unfun to die to random crits in situations where they would otherwise survive.
Most people have found themselves shouting hard when crit was more relevant past seasons / expansions, things like " THIS GUY IS SO LUCKY HE WON THE LOTERRY WITH HIS CRITS " are often things you would hear back in the days.

Thanks guys, appreciate the insight.
What about abilities that are guaranteed crit? Such as Fire Mages, and Warlocks.
If a spell is guaranteed to crit, is there any bonus crit damage for these hits? Or is it simply a wasted stat
Crit is overall the worst PvP stat to get from items for most specs. Chaos bolt gets amplified by crit, that is true, however Mastery gives it more damage overall while also buffing the other spells flat damage. So Crit is the worst stat for Destruction warlock for example. And even so Mastery is secondary to Destro locks, since Haste is that much more valuable for getting damage off.
Fire Mages just crit anyways, so getting crit chance doesn’t really do anything. Haste is a lot more value because things lik Fire Blast scale their cooldown with Haste, and you need your fast casts of Polymorphs and Fireballs with haste anyway.
All in all, I think Crit AT BEST is a 3rd best stat for some isolated specs that don’t benefit much from Haste.
For example I don’t need a single Haste item on Windwalker due to fixed GCD and haste modifiers. So if I can’t get Vers or Mastery, I’ll go for crit as the 3rd option. I’m not sure about Marksman Hunter but I believe it’s similar, since Haste barely does anything for the spec.
The critical portion of the damage is reduced by 50% in PVP
Example:
Normal hit: 100k
Critical hit in PVE:200k
Take the extra 100k and divide it by 2
You get: 150k crit in PVP
Example for ele shaman:
Normal hit:100k
Crit in PVE: 250k
Take the extra, which is 150k, and divide it in 2, so 75k
You get 175k crit in PVP

Lmao when the 2 smartest kids in class have different answers is what this thread turned into
TLDR
crit bad, mastery / haste good
Thank you
and I appreciate my post may have looked like I was asking this, but I’m not actually concerned with how good crit is.
I like meme builds, I like stupid high risk 1 shots that are barely viable, and wanted a better understanding in how it works
It sounds like Fire Mage will never achieve the same broken, unrealistic 1 shots as other specs, because their crits are part of their kit
Where as critting on other specs can provide unreliable, unrealistic, funny results
elemental shammy crit build is fun
ascendance adds crit to damage of lava blast
can easily get back to back 200-300k Lava blasts
I wont too test crit on shadow, there are some talents that interact with crit so i will go haste and 2cnd a bit crit and try it out
