Pain in fingers. Solution!

Hello!

So the past few months ive been playing a lot. Due to fortunate circumstances.

Ive pushed 3 tanks to 2.9-3.1k io and a dps to 2.7k

But i dont know why, but the extensive playing has put a strain on my pinky finger. I dont know if its the old age or just strain.

Needless to say i need a solution, ive thought about changing all my keybinds so i dont use shift. But im hoping theres another way. Since it would take a lot of practice to get used to them (been using the same keybinds for maybe 10 years)

Any good ideas?

If you experience strain, take longer breaks whilst doing hand stretching and exercises.

Depending on your personal healthcare insurance, you may ask your doctor for a couple sessions for personal guidance at an expert or take a look at various youtube ones and exercise moderation.

I would not wait too long if you experience pain or longer sustained strain on your pinky finger. Sometimes it is also an ergonomics/table/chair issue so you would have to take an overall look at if it’s a good 90ish degrees while you have your hand resting easily over your desk/mouse and keyboard shortcuts not too far from each other.

Now you are making me worried haha.

Thst being said i actually just bought a new chair, do you think that could be the culprit?

Seeing your list of what maybe to do or what it could be, makes me want to just take my pinky out of the equation and remap all my keybinds haha

Seems pretty straight forward: Play less. Self control.

Yes, using shift is likely the culprit. If you haven’t got a wrist rest for your keyboard and mouse, get them now. Saved me a lot of hand pain.

I don’t know how old you are, but I’m late 40’s and have had similar problems. The main thing that helps are regular breaks and stretching the sore hand. An mmo mouse with more buttons can also help, you can bind something as an alternate key that causes less strain. I have a razer naga, now the problem is my right shoulder instead!

This seems to me like the start of RSI or a similar computer working issue.

Make sure your setup has a good correctly adjusted chair, a keyboard with a wrist rest and a comfortable position to use your mouse with.

Note: Not a doctor, seek medical advice from a professional if you need it.

Have you also done some other activities that could have contributed to it? Like grappling or sport where you grip with your hands a lot?

If you got numbness or tingling on ring finger and pinky try this stretch against wall or table example. It might come from long duration of hand kept on tension while playing and it irritates the nerves near elbow on forearm.

Try that stretch few times a day for 30 seconds and see if there is any improvement in few days or week. If not consult physiotherapist or doctor if it gets worse or bothers you. I have same nerve getting irritated on the same area and causes same issue and this helps. Ulnar nerve affects ring and pinky if you wish to google about it and research on your own. This is one of the streches for it.

I had it in a different spot in my hand a few years back after pvp-ing quite a lot. It took a while before it disappeared again, I made sure I did no high intensity stuff in game during that time and went even more casual afterwards than I already did before lol. I’m guessing you somewhat overdid it, and strained your pinky too much. Getting old sucks in some ways

Tendon sheath around there also makes a pop each time put tension on arm, IT symptoms

Isn’t that carpal tunnel? Also for people with athritis reading this, try rubbing nettles on your joints.

“I play several hours a day hitting the same 10 keyboard keys all the time while drinking Monster energy drink. I have type 2 diabetes and my BMI is 31 - any ideas why my finger started hurting? I have no idea what that could be. That must be my age, right?
What do you mean I should play less? That’s impossible. What else could I be possibly doing”
— Probably nobody nowhere ever

Yes, that’s surely this. GRAPPLING :smile_cat:

Honestly the best advice. If that doesn’t work, see a doctor.

It´s clearly a sign of a larger issue, needs to be amputated at the elbow.

On a more serious note, as someone who has suffered from repeated issues with CTS and Tennis elbow, if the pain persists for more than 2-3 days, just go see a doctor. Because what might help one problem can easily exacerbate or even cause another.

No offense to anyone here intended, but asking for medical advice on a gaming forum is close to the worst thing you can do. Because even if some of the advide is generally sound, we (or ar least most of us) are not trained medical practicioners, and even if we were we don´t have your arm in front of us to properly diagnose anything. :beers:

I just google this type stuff and pretty much anything in general. I had ring finger and pinky numbness and it were easy google and I fixed it with streches. Could gone and took doctor appointment and he would given the same streches of course, and if I wouldnt been able fix it, I would gone eventually.

This but also to be honest he also asked about solution related keybinds placements and the like.

Possible result if ask medical advice on gaming platform

I know what is going know :scream: is a Warlock casting curse of weakness on you :scream: but seriously, take breaks through out the day, as mentioned above, do hand excercises, take a breather every now and then, use hand grippers too and be sure to drink plenty of water, hidration is king!

Okay! So ill try the stretching and see if i can adjust my new chair alongside getting a wrist wrest. For a start, see if it helps

Also maybe i made it sound like i was playing 10 hours a day, i dont.

I play maybe 4 hour sessions 3 days a week

And correct i was seeking solutions (a random player i met, suggested me a command pad? And i thought maybe others had some other ideas)

Im awfully bad at going to the doctors , because usually my schedule is quite tight with stuff to do.

I havent done any grappling haha, and most of my work is basically just doing phone calls and talking to people.

But thanks a bunch for the replies! I might remap my keybinds anyways. Do yall have experience having most of the rotational spells on your mouse? Does it feel clunky? With camera movement and what not.

I have 9 buttons on my mouse including mousewheel u/d and middle. So i could do quite a few keybinds using that. Especially with alt modifier. Or maybe change one to be used as shift

Edit: Also i dont feel like playing less. I am fortunate to be able to play, and most likely in a month or two, im going back to play like 2 hours a week. I wanna enjoy it as much as i can haha

Play less
Also, while Forum dwellers can give you advice we are by no means doctors - usually not even the ones who clameis to be ones on the net… - so just to be o nthe safe side visit a doctor

I like that the ops post is about asking keybinds and the like and then whole thread spiralling to something of everyone come offering him advice to see a doctor. In any case few streches easily found via google are likely best to try before go booking any doctor appointments if that is even the case what he wished to get advice here for. I would try streching the hand.
