Paladin as in a "magic knight" sounds intriguing - but the crusader/religious aspect puts me off

I’m specifically thinking human paladin. Blood Elves can pull that off easy, no one really views them as “religious” and I know the religion in WoW is not really the same as irl, as the light is a real, visible power. But it’s just the general theme, churches, praying and all that. A magical knight or a knight with the ability to use light sounds intriguing though. And that’s sometimes what I miss as a warrior - the ability to use any sort of magic.

Any paladin mains found a way around this? Or anyone even feel the same way about them?

Paladins are Crusaders of Light, The Light isnt really a religion as such in terms of the game, they dont beleive in God as such as simply pull their strength from the Light.

I dont think a Paladin needs to really have a Religion, more a Strong connection with the Light. although it can feel very “goody 2 shoes” lore wise.

The light responds to the believer. The scarlet crusade have their paladins and they are far from good but since they believe in the light and their cause being righteous, the light responds.

The Light answers to anybody who calls for it. Regardless of ones motives. It is in no way different than the void in that regard.

What do you mean

Yeah I like this theory. It allows room for all kinds of fun

I wouldnt really call it a theory anymore at this point with what we got in the lore. We have people like Benedictus who has been using the Light while working towards achieving the goals of the Old Gods. Even directly using it against us in battle.

Then we also have the Army of the Light under Yrel. The Horde is also at war with said Army of the Light. Her faction is wielding the Light just as ours is wielding it but i wouldnt in any shape or form deem hers to be good. Its the same kind of fanaticism that Xe’ra displayed until Illidan disenchanted her. If you dont side with them youre either made a slave to “serve the light” against your will or be killed.

Blizzard has displayed several scenarios where one should have come to the conclusion that the Light and the Void are basically the same. Kinda like the force as Alewin said. Just not being part of the same being given they are both separate cosmic forces but they can be said to operate in the same fashion. As in they dont discriminate and will support anyone who calls out to them. That the Light was also shown to just be as corruptive further undermines this. But what the being wielding the light or void does with it is none of their business.

So ye its a theory you can say but really its not.

How many times must this thread be made over and over, like literally I saw this a while back…
Are you the same person doing this same thread over and over again?

Yeah I think it’s the same poster who started a similar thread a few months ago, but on an alt.

Seems too bothered by something so insignificant, he is…

What you want is a Battle Mage. so it’s more of a mage that can wear heavier armour and hit stuff with a sword as well as a fireball.

I’d quite like that too. A new mage spec perhaps.
But leave the current Paladin, I like it as a theme.

Yaas. That would be AWESOME. Literally the perfect spec. Demon Hunters kind of fill that void at the moment, to some extent

I did not know about that. Sorry if this is a double, I did try to look for similar topics before creating this, but didn’t find any. Apologies if this bothers you

ofc the light is a religion u need faith in it to function duhhh

zanda trolls blvd in rezan> now voljin
dwarf/human/draenei in holy light naaru
belves used to enslave light now they kneel too

What if I just tell the light to aid me in my quest to keal you in a pvp battle because you wrote “duhhh” and I think that’s inappropriate. Would the light be with me?

But it isnt rly is it.

I think its quite different, you dont rly worship the light as a paladin, u call upon its power,

If you were to read it alike yhe bible ud be the person in the story, not the one worshipping your actions. I wouldnt say ur apart of the religion in the same sense as a christian.

Well, it bothers me when people are pretending to be someone else but actually posting from an alt. Checking both armories confirms it.
And here’s the other topic.

But… Paladins were literally Christian Knights. I am not religious in the slightest and I main a Paladin. When I press Crusade, I don’t think of the connotations, but the Crusades were pretty heavily tied to religion. I think what they did in WOW with tying it to the Light is quite good, as the Light is an actual force in the Lore (much like Arcane or Death Knight magic derive their power from their respective forces).

What? That is not me. But thanks for the topic, that’s a good read, but it’s closed now though. It appears you were heavily involved in the other discussion. Maybe it bothers you a bit people question the way you want a paladin to be?

You mean real life paladins? Yep, but they’re a little different in rpgs. I’ve seen rpgs with hunter-type paladins too - which would be a cool addition to the current wow paladins

The paladin faith evolved multiple times through changes and additions in lore.

Started as your stereotypical “Christian like” Holy Light faith practiced by humans and dwarves.

TBC introduced the Na’ru, an Draenei, giving the first big expansion to how “The Light” works in wow. In addition, Blood Knights used to “enslave the light” or something along those lines. Though after Velen helped them fix the sun well, the Blood Elves very much converted to using the Light in a more “traditional way”.

Fast forward to Cataclysm, Taurens are now paladins too. They’ve got nothing to do with the Holy Light as we know it but are instead “Sun Walkers” and are worshiping the Sun in a way more akin to a “tribal” or “pagan” way. You may read more about this looking up An’she on wowpedia.

Finally, blizzard introduced the cosmology chart on their Chronicles book. This depicted the light as one of 6 major cosmological factions. This completely semented the light into being a larger cosmological force, together with its own domain and god like entities.

The game generally doesn’t make a very good effort at articulating those nuances. All paladins are angel winged, undead killing paladins when it comes to the gameplay. I really hope they’ll consider class skins at some point!

PS: then shadowlands happened and everything makes slightly less sense. Heavily Fel infused individuals outside of demons also become bound to the twisting nether, yet any other empowered mortal go to the shadowlands regardless… (IE and powerful light practitioner doesn’t return to the domain of the light upon death, arcane to order etc etc)
