PC restarts when starting WoW - I need help

Hey guys!

So I’m looking for help from any source I can get.
I replaced some PC components to better ones, so my set-up looks like this:

MSI B560 Tomahawk Motherboard (brand new)
i5 11400F CPU (brand new)
GeForce GTX 2060 GPU (1 year old)
32 RAM (16 RAM 2x) (brand new)
( PSU is: Sharkoon 700w - has 3ish years, aiming to get a new one tomorrow just in case.)

Trouble is, every time I start the game, my PC restarts on its own. No error, nothing…just restarts.
I can watch videos, do Photoshop, but whenever I enter a game (ANY game) my PC restarts.

So far it looks like this:

• I start WoW and get to character selection screen. I hit enter world and wait for loading screen, then my PC restarts.
After trying the same thing again, my BNet went bonkers and stopped recognizing WoW among my installed games, so I had to ‘locate’ it again.
When I located WoW again, my graphics reset to default.
I put my graphics back to how they were, and when I clicked ‘apply’ PC restarted again.

• I wanted to test the same on ESO.
I login and get to char screen and then my PC restarts.

• Tried the same with GW2.
I enter the game there and walk around a bit, then PC restarts too.

Everything else works as in…I can type, open browser, my PC starts up well, there’s no ‘error’ nor screen tearing, no visual interruptions etc.
So…I’m breaking my head over this.
What could be the problem? :frowning:
I have this very rotten luck with PC, as every time I get something new and look forward to it, it doesn’t work. Ugh.

Also to note, I use HDMI cable for my monitor, not sure if that has something to do with it?
Even though it all worked flawlessly well two days ago on my old set-up (with same gcard).
I had i5 8400 processor and Asus Tuf B360-pro gaming motherboard.

Sounds like PSU on it’s way out.
Update bios

Yep, PSU is likely culprit. Not familiar with Sharkoon and couldn’t find any decent reviews of their PSUs so can’t really comment on the quality of them. I would guess it is not very good quality PSU.

Be warned that if the PSU is damaged or otherwise bad trying to use the computer and PSU triggering it’s failsafe has some risk that it can damage other components in the computer.

I would suggest spending some money on a solid PSU of your choice, avoid the cheapest ones.

I suspect that as well.
I’m gonna get new one tomorrow and see if that fixes the issue. If not, I suspect either Motherboard or GPU.
I’ll keep this post updated and with a solution once I figure it out. In case someone else gets the same issue.

I’d also immediately suspect the PSU here, but before replacing it - maybe just try re-plugging literally all connectors on the motherboard, and make sure all the little extender/lifter bits that are screwed in to elevate the motherboard off the side-panel are in the right place.

Reasoning: this sounds a lot like the spike in voltage draw from entering a game is essentially short-circuiting your motherboard (thus forcing a hot reboot), but said spike isn’t that much higher than e.g. Photoshop would cause. I’ve personally seen this happen with a bad connector too, so with any luck that’ll be the case… it’d definitely be cheaper than a new PSU at least. Fingers crossed!

Thanks for responding here Veadsarias
I really hope it’s something minor and that it isn’t PSU.
I’ll check tomorrow at repair store and see what the issue is.
Fingers crossed it’s something small - like bad connectors!

EDIT:

Coming here with an update!

I changed PSU and now everything works perfectly fine.
Faulty PSU was the issue here. I used Sharkoon 700W for 3+ years and it seems that it couldn’t pull my new config too well.

For a moment I thought it had something to do with overclocking my RAM to 3200 mhz. As I use Kingston Fury Beast 3200mhz, but clearly that wasn’t the case.

Glad you got it sorted:)

Might not be faulty, just old. As the capacitors age in PSU’s, they become less able to maintain a constant voltage. Cheap capacitors in cheap PSU’s age faster than quality ones, and Sharkoon is a brand known for being cheap.

Personally I’d recommend Seasonic for PSU’s as them are the OEM for most other branded PSU’s.
