Hey, I am currently leveling up like 80 pets from lvl 0 to 25, and I am curious - does it affect pets in their XP gain if they die during the battle? Because they keep leveling up even if they die.
That’s new, it used to stop any xp, nice to know.
It wasn’t always like this, but it was changed in Shadowlands.
The devs changed levelling for the better in 9.1.5, after which a dead level pet receives 50% of its expected XP.
The experience penalty for a pet dying has been reduced to 50% (was 100%). Pets still need to be active for at least one round to be eligible to earn experience from a battle.
If you are levelling 80 pets, I hope you are doing so efficiently. 
Battling repeatable Legion Tamers or Squirt will level one pet to 25 in 4 battles with the Hat (5 without, I suppose)
I see you have no pets at 25 yet.
If I were in your shoes, and really wanted to level those pets, I would do one of two things:
- Get a Teroclaw Hatchling (they’re for nothing in the AH) and level it to 25. Then I would keep a sharp eye out for the World Quest Snail Fight! In Highmountain in Legion. (If you have Legion World Quests open?)

or
- Get two pets suitable for a Squirt strat to 25, and wait for the next Squirt Day. Squirt comes to the Draenor Garrison every 15 days, and is available for battling all day.
There are many Squirt strats. This one uses probably the two easiest-to-get and cheapest pets to do the levellling. https://www.wow-petguide.com/Strategy/41/Deebs,_Tyri_and_Puzzle Like Legion World Quests, it will take 4 or 5 battles to get a pet from 1 to 25.

Just a heads up.
If you have a level 3 Pet Menagerie in your Garrison, Thursday is going to be mega xp day.
The pet arena trainer gives out mega xp & combined with the Hat, & pet treats you can level a pet from 1 to 25 in 3 battles.
This is much, much faster than regular battle levelling.

Yeah, that’s Squirt.
Same XP as Legion Tamers.
However, you know in advance when Squirt will be available.
I am almost sure you don’t need a Level 3 Menagerie though. I am almost sure you need just Menagerie Level 1. I should know, but not sure and no time to check now, running!

If you’re not in a hurry I like to have some alts in Warlords doing the Pet Battle Dailies.
Aslei (near Alliance Garrison) can be soloed by a Mechanical Panda Dragon and level raise two level 1 Pets to 10. Then jump to an alt at a different WoD Pet Tamer and raise one of them to 17 in another battle, do this a few more times and that pet is 25.
The xp for the daily will level your alts pretty fast (this has been boosted since DF) used to be roughly 5% of a leve per day but now it’s more like 25% so you get a level every four days on your alts. I hope this is intended and not a bug that gets changed (I probably shouldn’t have mentioned it).
