We’ve finally decided which two areas of Auckland we are living in when we eventually emigrate.
North Shore - Birkdale.
Auckland City - Greenlane, Avondale and Hillsborough
It saddens me slightly, that we have to go to the city that many immigrants seem to flock to as I’d love to live in Wellington; however we must be practical and our best shot at this move would be to live in Auckland.
Prepare for the Mancs, New Zealand. We’re on our way soon!
Finally getting a haircut and colour later. My hair is it’s -natural colour- for the first time in years and I hate it and it’s so looong. So woo haircut.
Finally catching the Christmas bug. Been listening to old timey Christmas songs and planning to do some (entirely unhealthy but sod it) baking this weekend.
Thanks to Bloodborne, I started reading Lovecraft a couple of months ago, and now I’m reading his entire bibliography chronologically. It’s amazing stuff. I love his fancy purple prose, the atmosphere he builds and the themes he employs. My favorite so far is probably The Music of Erich Zann, which is something of a blend between traditional gothic horror and his own style.
I’ve also picked up some Lovecraft-inspired works for some variation as I work through his stories. I’ve already read Uzumaki, one story from The King in Yellow (“The Repairer of Reputations”,) and am currently reading a non-fiction book called The Conspiracy Against Humanity. It’s written by Thomas Ligotti, an author greatly inspired by Lovecraft, and is basically a dissertation on pessimistic philosophy where he basically argues that we’re all living a nightmarish existence, but delude ourselves and each other into thinking otherwise. One reviewer described it as basically the only book about cosmic horror as a philosophy - really fascinating stuff. It has been used as inspiration for the character of Rust Cohle (the one played by Matthew McConaughey) from True Detective.
Started reading Berserk, too, also thanks to Bloodborne. Man, that game really reignited my love for horror & dark fantasy. What an insane creative journey it’s been, and it’s only gonna get more fun. Next on the Lovecraft list is The Call of C’thulu… At long last…!
"That is not dead which can eternal lie. And with strange aeons even death may die.”
Chambers is so under-rated (where I live) it hurts me. I want his works translated and in my collection already.
I also suggest Ambrose Bierce highly if you fancied pre-Lovecraft era evolution of the horror.
My pet delight was this post now I want to finish the book I am reading. I am starting The Fifth Season series when I am done with it. (It’s a local writer whom I am reading at the moment, her first book, supporting regional writers.)
Heck yea. I thought “The Repairer of Reputations” was one of the most amazing short stories I have ever read tbh. And well, even Lovecraft himself has expressed his disappointment that Chambers didn’t write more weird fiction, because he believed Chambers would easily have become a master of the genre! Can’t wait to read the rest of The King in Yellow.
Haven’t heard of this guy before somehow, I’ll be sure to take a look at his stuff.
The name made me excited for Mingsplosions, but I guess the Mandate of Heaven was a pretty long-lived concept, seeing as this is well over a thousand years before the China I have come to know and love and hate through Europa Universalis IV.
I did a thing, hit a deadline and finished a recording of an Audiobook before I promised the Author I would! My first completed Narration, and to say I am somewhat ecstatic about this, is to miss a chance to use the phrase Over the frickin’ moon! It is a lot harder than people think, VA work, and when a chapter takes about 40 minutes, one take, no breaks, pauses, sneezes, coughs or sips of water, a whole Novel is a big Deal. Nailed it. Frickin’ Nailed it. Within ten minutes I got a mail from a company offering me a ten month contract to do some recording for them. Seems like a)they like my shiz, and b) this is my frickin’ year…
It reminds me of healing +10s on a fresh 110 priest back in Legion. It was pretty funny when my big heals were comparable to the damage dealers’ self-heals and I could get nowhere near the heals of my tank.
