Pet Peeve #INFINITY - Thanos gonna cry

Well equality is nice and all but I’d like my own people to be a little more equal than everyone else, you see?

That’s :no_good_man:

Yeah but you can’t just flip a switch and make the whole world “colourblind” in an instant. Things need to be done to elevate marginalised groups to the same level as those who are better off. It’s why affirmative action happens. To get these groups into better positions so that there comes a time where it’s no longer needed and we can stop doing it.

Does that necessarily mean it’s a good idea that works? That’s another debate. But it’s not some weird conspiracy to keep white men down.

It is because of the difference between ‘Equality’ and ‘Parity’. I’ll try to give an example using the ‘Unequal Impact’ argument ( which is an old one by the way, not a recent thing). In the UK you have to wear a Crash Helmet to ride a motorcycle. That is equality, it is a legal requirement that applies to everyone riding a motorcycle. Everyone. That is utter Equality. Now, does that have the same impact upon everyone?

No. As a White dude, I can put on a Crash Helmet, and that’s no biggie, it will muss my hair up some.
If I was a Sikh, that means having to remove my Turban. That’s an essential part of the Religious credo. Essentially it is saying “If I am Christian, I am not allowed to wear a Crucifix whilst riding a motorcycle”

So the actual letter of the -Law- is equal, but the impact the Law has, is not Equal. It has far more effect on one segment of society, than the other.

To give a more extreme example, absolute -Equality- would mean spending the same resources in Testicular Cancer in Women, that we do in Testicular Cancer in Men.

Now obviously, that is ridiculous. Women cannot get Testicular Cancer, lacking Balls (Though men can get Breast Cancer), but -absolute- equality, would mean doing just that. Plunging money and time into something that cannot biologically happen. -Parity- of Treatment would mean going “Men are much more likely to suffer Testicular Cancer and Prostate Cancer, than women are. Women are equally much more likely to suffer Breast Cancer. As such, we shall divide the funds accordingly, and plow the same amount of effort into combatting both.”

You can’t -have- absolute equality when there are unique conditions to the sexes, or for that matter, races of humanity. Sickle Cell Anaemia is a bigger problem for Black people, than White people, Osteoporosis is the reverse.

It’s an interesting and valid point to make - humans are not all born equal yet we are often told by pundits from one end of the ideological spectrum that we’re all equal. When in fact there is irrefutable scientific evidence that there are fundamental biological differences amongst humans.

As I said, ideal world.

Heck no… A colourblind world would also mean disregarding an important part of culture and history. You’re african because you’re black (Yes you can be a white african but I more talking about customs, culture, the people who instilled that).

Look all I demand myself is equality of rights and opporunities. Not outcomes.

And a world without the concept of Asian/Africans/Arabians/Europeans all that would make a not so diverse world… Plus I love jokes… Jokes oriented toward those concepts, when done rights, they’re hilarious…

That’s not really what people mean when they say we’re all equal. They mean that as human beings we are all equally entitled to our right to live, be free, etc. Of course there are fundamental biological differences. But when you use those biological differences to suggest that some people shouldn’t have certain rights based purely on how they’re born, you get into some pretty rocky territory.

Not to suggest that that’s what you’re saying in your post, I’m just clarifying the distinction.

I also agree with Ranying above that a lack of any cultural barriers whatsoever would make for a less interesting world. It’s just that it’s possible to have that while accepting new ones and giving them the same rights etc.

Oh we’re the same -Species- alright, just not the same strain of the species. Neither strain is better than the others. This is why we get peculiarities like Lactose Intolerance. That is not only -Normal- for humans, but normal for Mammals! Those of us who like drinking Milk are an absolute biological aberration (And yes, I fully count myself there, I love Milk!) Its not actually good for any mammal once they have been weaned (Yes, Hedgehogs and Cats included, the cartoons lied to us) It is however a Caucasian trait unique almost to Western Europe and the USA. Its not -normal-

So the Lactose Intolerant folks are actually far more in kilter with base humanity, than those of us who can tolerate it in older life.

Also very true points, a variances of culture are important. It’s sad that there’s a trend present in globalisation that seeks to homogenize all very unique and special cultures into one mush.
Not to mention when you try force contradicting cultures together it creates disharmony and trouble.

I agree very firmly about equality of opportunity - it’s what I was getting at with being egalitarian.

I’m quite certain evolution doesn’t seek to be normal or irregular, it just happens.

I have theories as to why our particular strain of H*omo Sapiens Sapiens has developed lactose tolerance, which does have some scientific basis in fact, however because I am not (along with the scientific community) certain on this, I am hesitant to say why. But its basically Genghis Khan’s fault.

I’m pretty sure North-Eurasian and European peoples were drinking and eating dairy products before Chingis Khan.

Not to the same extent, apparently. It vastly became a noted thing after his invasions. As I say, Science is out on this one, so I am not clinging to it, but they think there was a link, even if not the direct cultural imperative…

There’s something about this sentence that I just love.

In Ireland we swap out Genghis Khan for “the Brits”

And in america it’s obama

I may have to start using that as a stock explanation “So, why has our Internet footprint went down, and we are getting less hits than normal?” I slowly stand, straighten my jacket and say solemnly “basically it is Genghis Khan’s Fault” “What? How?” “I do not have to explain my methods!” waggles finger “Just Blame Genghis Khan”

I might be dumb, but didn’t white people have the genes of three three H^omo species?

H’omo Sapiens Sapients, H’omo Neanderthalus and another one?

Yeah, we’re a crazy grab bag of genes. And its not dumb. When I started school there was only one Homo Species, which was Homo Sapiens, This later got changed to H*omo Sapiens Sapiens, and I don’t know what it Is now, but then when I was at school, we used the proper frickin’ words for Velociraptor’s and shiz. We got a whole Christmas doggy bag of genetics, essentially.

The cat’s just vomited up blood, I am no longer interested in doing anything else tonight other than keeping an eye on him (if he throws up more blood, I’ll take him to the emergency vets)

Poor kitty.
