Pet peeves: The return (Part 14)

Pride event is in town tomorrow and got told some nutty evangelicals are gonna be attending to preach at whoever attends  Seen their posts about it, too. Ugh.

Good opportunity to make them deeply uncomfortable.

Also mass effect 3 is… not a good game. Without the hype coming off 1+2 mass effect 3 doesn’t stand. Me1 is a good game that also coasts in nostalgia, me2 same but me3 is just…

It doesn’t follow narratively and the gameplay isn’t engaging.

The opening is also far too long and ‘woe is earth’. Im also still not sure how blowing up a star system means the reapers will take ‘months’ to get to the next when when they appear to be traversing intergalactic space at speeds that make light jealous.

I hear your points, and they’re all good, however have you considered how cool it is to Vanguard Charge->Nova->Shotgun->Repeat.

That’s what I’ve been saying all along.

The only good parts of ME3 are the genophage cure arc, the quarian/geth arc, and the Citadel DLC. All of them are divorced from the main plot*, and the first two draw their narrative strength from being the climaxes of long-lasting plotlines previousky developed in the first two games. Citadel works better if you pretend it’s an epilogue taking place after the main game (there’s a mod that actually makes it such).

The main story about the Reapers and Cerberus is just juvenile garbage.

* I guess a token Reaper does show up in the genophage and quarian/geth arcs, but it’s inconsequential.

I have found Aldru again, this time on main. Another forumite on their forum main off the bucketlist!

I never touched ME3. In the run-up to the release, I burnt myself out on having a Shepard for each class, completed on Insanity difficulty, with all DLCs done. By the time I actually bought ME3 on release day and put it in my Xbox 360 I didn’t want to play any more Mass Effect.

You dropped this :crown:

Now, if you’ll excuse me, everyone who shills for this accursed technological parasite needs visitng… :hammer:

I put on my glasses.

The moment the reapers hit the first mass relay station they can spread rapidly through the galaxy using FTL after jumping to different relay points just like the races already living there. The system containing the Alpha relay is simply the one closest to the edge of void space where the reapers were hibernating. They have been travelling towards the galaxy for two years already in between ME1 and ME2 after Sovereign failed to open the Citadel relay, plus an additional six months between ME2 and ME3. Two and a half years of non-stop FTL (it is speculated in the codex that reaper FTL drives are capable to move twice as fast as the most sophisticated starship) beelining towards the Milky Way seems pretty fair.

people hate mass effect 3 because its an unfinished incoherent mess

That’s not what the game shows. The game itself very strongly indicates they didn’t start their travel until you blow the collector base and, frankly, from where they are you can see the entire galaxy.

If they can traverse that gap in 6 months then whatever system they arrive in is irrelevant, they don’t need the gates.

Tbf it’s not exactly a plot whole as me3 does show them just moving across the galaxy at speed but it dies make arrival all rather pointless - both in terms of having g us do it outside of a half baked excuse to reset the pc and why the reapers were even bothering to aim for any gate.

Didn’t the Reapers start moving (slowly) after Sovereign got exploded at the end of ME1? Since they were planning their harvest to start after they all ported through the Citadel relay. It seems a bit weird for them to start only after the end of ME2 if that was the case.

Which shoves the timeline out from six months to…two years and seven months? Ish?

I know this isn’t news to anyone, but the new War of the Worlds movie is really bad.

I hate it because Kai Leng exists. That is all.

I wish they’d gone with the original planned explanation for The Reapers. This is what I vaguely recall about it.

Essentially, the abuse of Mass Effect technology causes the amount of dark matter in the universe to increase, threatening the stability of stars by increasing their entropy, as seen on worlds like Haestrom. The Reapers’ job was to cull sentient species once they begin dabbling with dark energy technology, preventing them from accelerating the heat death of the universe.

The Catalyst was a weapon that would’ve worked by destabilising the rare elements that Reapers were composed of. Your big choice would’ve been either to let the cycle continue, or finish it, but leave the responsibility to solving the intractable problem in mortal hands - a choice which endangered the existence of reality itself.

Afaik nothing in the game supports that, we just have them waking up after their bizarre plan to make a baby reaper fails. (Which seems to be, build baby reaper, have baby activate citadel - but again nothing actively supports, thats just the only thing I can think of that is coherent with whst we’re told about them to that point)

Then they have to traverse a considerable distance to the galaxy, which if they can do means they don’t need the gateways (which me3 supports tbf) making the whole sovereign thing less of a ‘they must do’ and more ‘they want to’ (but honestly me1 is entirely Shepard speculating widely on what eldritch horrors can do so that’s kind if a given).

But overall me2 just makes the reapers look remarkably bone headed which me3 doubles down on.
You can tell the writer changed at some point.

there isnt really much bizare about it. theyve done this with other species with the proto-reaper resembling the species liquified into its creation.

Finished Harvestella with all chivos.

Solid enough RPG with a side farming thingy from Square. No real voice acting except for the combat barks and a lot of reused animations from other Square titles make it feel a bit ‘budget’ so them charging £50 full price is a bit of a shocker. Grab it on sale like I did and enjoy.

I will say I was pleasantly surprised that you could marry (sorry, ‘become a life partner’) of any of your social bonds, including the gender ambiguous robot, the unicorn, the old man mayor, and the rest of your party members. Gotta give them respect for doing the same thing I do in my writing and making everyone bisexual.

the eternal torment between ‘we need regular non-binary representation you can’t just have us be robot/person in mask all the time’ and ‘omg it me they just like me fr’

yes my favourite characters in borderlands were zer0 and fl4k why do you ask

In fairness they (she?) are generally referred to be feminine pronouns pretty much throughout, except one or two times she got he/him’d.

Can’t even say it’s high heels because every robot has those, even ones referred to by masculine pronouns.
