No, they’re mandatory.
i remember when they were not, but they are now.
What confuses me is why they didn’t just make them mandatory at the beginning of ShB.
They were mandatory when I did them and I started at the end of August.
Probably because it would have felt weird (when it wasn’t mandatory) for the game to force you to do lvl 50 content when you finish stormblood, considering that it would narratively kinda make the time line weird. Mandatory while you’re still in ARR makes more sense.
before it became mandatory you could do the whole of the first patch of ShB without it. It became mandatory in the .1 patch (or later).

In fact, I’m pretty sure if you view that cinematic in the inn, it has the icon next to it to mean, there’s an alternate path if you do other content

Speaking of Emet-Selch, he did reveal some interesting things I won’t spoil here but it has me all 
it being done in ARR wasn’t what I was saying.
What I was saying is you could completely miss it altogether and play ShB fine, it wasn’t until either .1 or .2 when they made it mandatory and obviously made any newbies doing ARR play it.
EDIT: I’m sure if people have older alts who were past ARR who haven’t done it CT, they’d have the pre .x patch experience.
Unfortunately, I only ever got to experience it once because I skipped every side quest on Leo up until this expansion.
On every other alt, I’d found out that more roulettes = faster levelling so unlocked them all from then on.

Being work standby/on call is such guff. Had plans for the weekend, given I’ve just this week moved house, but nooo. Have to put everything on hold for today ‘just in case’ 
Still stuff I can do, but not THE stuff I had planned, and my brain HATES that.

They really need to either add more space to that thing or adopt something like WoW’s transmog collection.
They do, yeah.
Probably will add more space, but one can hope for wow’s transmog system.
Although, think that’d be complicated what with dyes.
Some of my characters have 4 of the same item in it because they’re all dyed different colours

Depends on how those are handled in the code. If it’s just a small ID change it would make the initial set-up for a WoW-like system a tiny bit more annoying (especially if they changed systems somewhere in between… which… happens) but overall putting in a check for “this player has used a dye on this item to unlock [ItemID][DyeID]” shouldn’t be difficult. Just tedious with all the old stuff.

Trying to give as many order factions on TW:WH2 Legendary lords as possible.
Sudenburg and Oreon need some love.
If you use the expensive dyes I understand, but otherwise I just apply dye each time I make a plate if it’s not an item I always want the same.
I dye the plate too, but no, i am using expensive dyes on the ones where i have multiple of the item.
