There's plenty of criticism to be made regarding Endwalker, but I can't help but be annoyed by one of the most common complaints I see.āis this really the ultimate villain? i canāt believe that zodiark gets snubbed and the big bad is just a blue bird girl who is sadā
Itās as if their minds completely fog over during Elpis because āwow emet-selch and hythlodaeus sure are pretty arenāt they.ā Almost half of that zone is exposition about how the sad bird girl is actually a vast hive-mind of empathic beings who can convert the emotions they absorb into energy and cannot tell the difference between their own feelings, and those that they absorb from others. Then the entire epilogue of Elpis is about how that hive-mind has inadvertently absorbed and been hijacked by the collective despair of a hundred dead and/or dying worlds, completely overwhelming the base personality of the Meteia.
But I guess itās easier to be absurdly reductive and boil the entire thing down to āsad bird girlā because itās easier to complain about.
I think itās quite reasonable to complain about. Square Enix have for the overwhelming majority of the FF14 story arc managed to avoid the standard JRPG tropes, despite what and who are making it.
Then they sort of fall over on the last hurdle.

The gag being that JRPGs end up with you fighting against literal cosmic gods. They kind of subvert this massively by having you kerb stomp the literal diarchy of Dark and Light (though the latter seems accidental narratively) only for them to pull something out of the pages of the Danganronpa series as the final boss, without the mind-bending complexity of that series.
It would have been far better if Meteionās role was less as the BIG SPECTACLE BAD at the end and perhaps subverted. Instead of being the final boss, her role may have been to gradually make Hydaelyn/Venat over the 12 thousand years of solitude eventually lose hope, to which we have to regretfully put her out of her misery as the final boss, and in doing so, seeing the strength of mankind the reverse dynamis effect radiates through the world, ceasing the Final Days.
But no, we go to the literal edge of the universe, punch depressed skynet to death then literally punch blond Sasuke to a pulp and leave him to die.
I honestly did not expect Zenos to be a more satisfying narrative end than the freaking Endsinger but I suppose my expectations were subverted there too.
Iām just glad heās proper super serious dead now (honestly guys). He was only around because the standard cardboard shonen anime antagonist that he is was very popular in many crowds in the JP community.
He didnāt carry Stormblood, Yotsuyu and to a lesser extent, Fordola did.
He didnāt carry Endwalker, that burden lies on master of disguise Fandaniel.
Even if the reductio ad nihilum motivation he had was quintessentially your bog standard stock JRPG villain memery he did at least have some thought provoking points as Hermes.
Though Iām not sure the commentary about environmental preservation being mixed up with answers to the Fermi Paradox all going to āhaha weāre all bad people we need to dieā is a very good statement to make in 2021.

Now thatās a valid complaint to make, and thatās perfectly understandable. Itās a different complaint to the one that I was grouching about though. Youāre critical of the substance of the story, while some of the other critics disregard the substance in favor of reducing the villainās identity down to something short, catchy and disparaging.
It would be like complaining about the Jailer because āheās just a bald dude with prominent nipples,ā when the problems with the Jailer are far more significant than that. Itās the shallowest sort of criticism.
I know exactly what you mean but I think that the design complaints for Papa Z are way more relevant. Heās giving speeches on enslaving the universe while the camera focuses on his diamond cutters.
Iām not disagreeing that itās not the strongest of criticisms, but I really need to get it off my chest that his nips are distracting.
Why does he even have them? And why does the camera love to focus on them?

Picked up Sekiro again in anticipation of Elden Ring.
Im kinda glad Elden Ring is going to be easier (afaik). Basic enemies in Sekiro are like miniature Bloodborne bossesā¦ Honestly no idea how I even managed to take down an actual boss.
Sure wasnt by actually using parries because I probably wouldnt be struggling so much otherwise. Wish it was as doable as in BB.
