Pet peeves: The return (Part 2)

Pandaemonium

I found it kinda funny how in the Cutscene after the 2nd boss, the Erichthonios guy describes the boss of this gym Hesperos as a kind and supportive person, while in the shot of him that they show as Erich speaks, he smirks villainously and gives off mad Albert Wesker vibes lol. And then appears in person looking like Wesker cosplaying Dracula from Castlevania.

Big true. All the props to the absolute Chad that made dsfix. If not for him, I’d not have gotten into dark souls until 2, if not 3.

it is significantly easier to build new decorations for a cake than it is to make one from scratch, mind

I can only say yes

Very true, however, as far bugs go, that’s what the QA/testers are for. And even then it is usually a management issue, more so than competency of an individual dev/tester.

A lot of that will likely come down to management, yeah - some minor bugs might not be considered worth the dev time it would take to diagnose and fix the problem, or are being held to fix a bunch of issues in a patch, or other things I don’t know enough about the development or business sides of games to know.

It does get egregious with some companies, naming no Bethesdas in particular

Looks at the State of QA testing/how the industry has been (mis)treating QA staff for years

Yeeeah, about that…

I’ve only recently started learning this stuff and it’s pretty much as you say. Bugs prioritized by their severity/danger and it’s not really done out of laziness/malice (in theory), based on how much it will cost to fix them, among other things. Sometimes it is don’t to present a fix as a feature, which is a bit .
Most important thing to understand is that there is no such thing as a 100% bug free software. Such simply doesn’t exist with anything moderately complex, especially if we’re talking about a game that is being constantly updated. Someone more knowledgeable could correct me and elaborate in detail though.

And as you mention, Bethesda really is one of the worst offenders as they have the temerity to release games in pretty much literally unplayable condition. Fallout 76.

Which seems to be mostly a video game industry specific problem, as other software companies (business apps/websites) don’t seem to have such a dire problem. Generally speaking.

When I hear development stories I am convinced they are engaging in sorcery, especially when they all have stories like ‘this smiley face drawn on the other side of a wall to a player can never be accessed, but if we delete it then the entire source code bricks’

Or ‘all the players disappeared from the football game until we zoomed in and found them, still in formation, all contained inside the football’

Spriggan has my Dark Red Dye in my actual price range.

IDK what the hell’s going on with the other servers.

When the product that is going through QA is intended for entertainment, testing it can be seen as a ‘privilege.’ It’s the same sort of ‘you just play games for a living’ sneering that online media personalities are subjected to. Of course it’s a million times more complicated than that, but that doesn’t stop executives from targeting QA first when they’re looking to cut costs.

https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/cyberpunk-designer-responds-to-lack-of-police-chases-elden-ring-wont-have-them-either/

Cyberpunk 2077 quest director Pawel Sasko has provided a response as to why the game doesn’t feature police chases.
When asked why the game doesn’t feature police chases on a recent live stream, instead opting for police to spawn behind you randomly, the developer pushed back on the idea that “all” open-world games have these encounters, citing some examples. “I don’t think that the Sonic or the Elden Ring open-world game will have it”.

Ah yes, the only two other open world titles in gaming history
Sonic the Hedgehog and Bloodborne-with-a-Horse

Brandon Sanderson writing for a video game based on a new IP, announcement next year, seems like it’s a bigger studio too :exploding_head:

Hey man, I felt something similar recently. I don’t know how close we are in age, but just keep going at it and eventually old habits will come back, I was garbage at any FPS despite being pretty good at them until I grinded out a few games. It snapped back into the old groove afterwards little by little.
